by far one of the best marshalls and you don't have every kid on the block trying to get one like the jcm's or the silver jub's that's the best part imo :)
I played one of these suckers today as well as an SLP and a 1959RR and it's brother the 2466. The Vintage Modern blew the Plexis out of the water. I'm in love with these amps
@Mikeoo21 The Vintage Modern is not a two channel amp, it is a single channel amp with two dynamic ranges. It is meant to be played using your guitar volume control (old School) to dial in the tones. In the right hands the best sounding Marshall today.
It could be the tubes, but also his settings and mic and mic placement have a huge effect on the tone.... I've played this amp, and even at the low volumes at Guitar Center, i still loved it! Its not too harsh if you keep the presence and High Preamp Volume at reasonable levels... Excellent amp if you can tweak it just right
It's so cool that tube manufacturers have caught up with the demand for vacuum tubes in the guitar amp market. Just the fact that this amp is based around the KT-66, not to mention the fact that you can get a handful of different variations on this classic tube, is awesome for us!!!
@MrLordshanks Marshall have always been rock machines. Andy is mainly playing classic 70's tunes to show this as well. You are right, Zep and Marshall go hand in hand. Thanks for watching! -PGS
the clean demo for me at 2 mins sold it for me, that is one of the nicest sounds for me personally you can get, then further on in the vid my mind was just destroyed at the perfect crunch oh my yes pay day please
Great demo. Showed a lot of different tones and settings most other vids don't. I'm buying one this week, and this vid helped make my decision. Thanks!!!!!
@MrLordshanks I've gotten a vintage modern head to do a pretty good late 80's, early 90's type death metal tone, so it doesn't really stop at early hard rock such at Led Zeppelin. :) (And no, I'm not talking a scooped mids, no-balls crappy death metal tone, I'm talking boosted mids, classical roar, tear your face off Marshall death metal tone.)
It's suppose to work more like a classic single channel Marshall amp. Basically means you crank it up, then back down the volume on the guitar to get a clean sound...
A really nice AC/DC rhythm tone at around 3:10. Sounds like that amp can pretty much handle anything except full-on thrash or death metal. I guess you could boost the signal with a good distortion box if you want those kind of tones.
im gettin this amp thursday. im a BIG slash fan. i chose it cause he uses it but anyway which dynamic range will give me his sound? body and detail too thnx
Great demo! I had no interest in the Vintage Modern until I saw this vid, I play a JCM900 SL-X and this amp seems similar with the Detail and Body controls the SL-X has Gain and Gain Sensitivity but the different tubes gives a different tone. Would love to see you do a demo of an SL-X, just see how good you could make it sound :)
could I have all the settings for that fat high gain tone with the tele at the end please. preamp was all the way the mids backed off, what about the presence and the rest. Thanks
whats the song called that he starts playing at 1:56 to about 2:12. ive heard it before, but i cant remember the name ... can anyone recall or tell me?
@ProGuitarShopDemos is it possible to play Guns N Roses on it? Or Iron Maiden? Or with extra gainy pedals some Megadeth? because I love that crunchy 70s tone... and I think I wouldnt get this kinda tone from the JCM800 and perhaps this is more versatile than JCM
***HELP*** Is there anyway to get a more even volume between the low and the high? It's either too quiet on the low if I set the high volume 1st, or too loud (on the high) if I set the low volume 1st. any suggestions would be GREATLY appriciated!! Thanks!!!
I own one of these and love it except one thing...it desperately needs a dedicated volume control for the second channel. The difference in volume from overdriven to clean will make you jump and then scramble for the volume control on your guitar. That said the tone is awesome and very modifiable. It was between this and the plexi 1987x and this just had more to offer IMHO.
He never played a plexi...maybe in the early days of Guns N' Roses. He recorded Appetite for Destruction with a modded JCM800 (rented from S.I.R. Studios). From the late '80s he's been playing Marshall Silver Jubilee heads along with his signature Marshall amp (which is the reissue of the Silver Jubilee). Nowadays he's also using a Vintage Modern for tonal differences. I saw Doug Aldrich with Whitesnake. He is using Vintage Modern heads. He has a HUGE sound!
You could take a look at a jcm 800 or a jmp, and then combine it with a mesa boogie v-twin for the metal sound (or a Fulltone OCD). I've been looking at the orange rockerverb 50 for some time now, that amp is quite capable for both genres as wel, it is a dual channel amp though. Good luck!
he has it cranked up right? because i can't get that distortion ou of my VM with the MV at 3/4 what settings do you think he's using at the very beginning?
great to hear sultans at the begining. It kinda spooked me out since i was thinking how this would sound with Mark Knopfler stuff and he started playing abit of sultans
nice video, i want to buy a vintage amp but i haven t decided yet between the vintage modern, a plexi or the vintage modern 2466. what is the difference between them???
What are the settings at the beginning (Unchained!), including midboost and master volume? Sounds great! @MegaFenderstrat The combo version has dynamic range and reverb foot switches, and from the reviews I've seen I think the other 2266 versions are the same.
Finally marshall makes an amp that actually sounds like a marshall!!! I dig a lot of those tones!!
by far one of the best marshalls
and you don't have every kid on the block trying to get one like the jcm's or the silver jub's

I absolutely love the vintage moderns and class 5's!they are just as great as any old plexi
Man, I wanna get a Fender Bassman for cleans, the VM for crunch, and a Soldano SLO for high gain and leads. That would be a killer set-up!!!
so is this essentially like having a Plexi and JCM 800 in the same amp?
I'm a humbucker guy, but I absolutely love that tele tone!!
my favorite marshall head. and i am usually in heavy rock and metal, but this amp just has something else that i really like. someday i will take one.
Great head! KT66s are the best tubes I've ever tried! A great step ahead from Marshall.
I've been wearing ear plugs on the high wattage amps! It helps that I'm on the side of the amp, not sitting in front too.
@Mikeoo21 The Vintage Modern is not a two channel amp, it is a single channel amp with two dynamic ranges. It is meant to be played using your guitar volume control (old School) to dial in the tones. In the right hands the best sounding Marshall today.
Finally a video that shows how versatile this amp really is! Thanks for posting!
One of the best clean tone i ever heard
Absolutely works for metal. If you put it through a THD hotplate or boost with a screamer you will have a seriously hairy monster.
It could be the tubes, but also his settings and mic and mic placement have a huge effect on the tone.... I've played this amp, and even at the low volumes at Guitar Center, i still loved it! this beats every marshall ive tried so far...i think i know what my next amp is...this things sings AND screams...
Wow, sounds great! A lot better than what I had expected.
@MrLordshanks Marshall have always been rock machines. Andy is mainly playing classic 70's tunes to show this as well. You are right, Zep and Marshall go hand in hand. Thanks for watching!

the clean demo for me at 2 mins sold it for me, that is one of the nicest sounds for me personally you can get, then further on in the vid my mind was just destroyed at the perfect crunch oh my yes pay day please
this amp gives you pure valve tone of any marshall amp ever made
whats he playing at 3:47 ?
Great demo. Showed a lot of different tones and settings most other vids don't. I'm buying one this week, and this vid helped make my decision. Thanks!!!!!

My fave Marshall amp since the 800 series!
It's not discontinued. It just comes in black tolex now and some stores won't have it in stock.
I bought one of these a few months back and it has a nice fizzy almost fuzz tone ot it which isn't very noticable on most videos. Very cool amp.
what a great amp!!!.. I've had my 2466 for around a month... best amp I've ever owned.. ..btw..who wants to buy a kerry king JCM? :D
yes, if you use moderate preamp volume, switch to the low DR ang roll back your guitars volume
I have this amp... it's freakin awesome.... and purple !
i reckon the body knob is brilliant, you can use it to get millions of tones, it doesnt just add flub it completely changes the tone.
Yes, it's a digital emulation of a plate reverb.
this guy has the best job in the world
It seems a little shrill like a JCM 900 until he hits that mid boost. After that it sounds perfect.
KT66 tubes are just amazing
Holy shit that's a HUGE sound, unchained at the beginning was sick!
my DREAM amp
DEFINETLY right cabinet for the opening song.
Good observation. I don't think I would have noticed it. Maybe I saw something like this back in 1984, when I bought my JCM 800 half stack!!
love how sultans is being played, your the man!
hey wats the difference with the 2266 and the 2466?
Currently Slash is using that head for his VR work. It should also give good enough distortion and tone for the older GnR songs too. :)
It's suppose to work more like a classic single channel Marshall amp. Basically means you crank it up, then back down the volume on the guitar to get a clean sound...
Loving the balls to the wall rock sound you're getting around 8:25. More impressive coming from a Telecaster!
@tremolo73 I think it is the 1960 AX cabinet with greenbacks.
wow playing snakecharmer brought back some memories! awesome!!
Awesome brown sound on that intro riff!
A really nice AC/DC rhythm tone at around 3:10. Sounds like that amp can pretty much handle anything except full-on thrash or death metal. I guess you could boost the signal with a good distortion box if you want those kind of tones.
Again a nice amp demo!!! My friend has this one with the original cab
(425A or something ;-)) But I preher this cab, lovely those' greenies!!
it depends because this amp is not as high in gain like a JVM cause when i play this amp in my room its totally different
Is that cab loaded with greenbacks? Sounds very punchy - there arent a lot of sound demos that I actually like but this one is cool!
Were you running it through a cab with Greenbacks here?
Which CAb is used in this video?? it is the 425??
im gettin this amp thursday. im a BIG slash fan. i chose it cause he uses it but anyway which dynamic range will give me his sound? body and detail too thnx
Unchained! Nothing Stays The Same!!!
Nice amp, and great taste of music, love the dire straits
What is the difference between v30's and greenbacks? and blackshadows? assuming they are all in a closed back cab?
Hey guys great demo. What cabinet model is that I am looking for one to pair with my 1987X?
Thanks again.
Great demo! I had no interest in the Vintage Modern until I saw this vid, I play a JCM900 SL-X and this amp seems similar with the Detail and Body controls the SL-X has Gain and Gain Sensitivity but the different tubes gives a different tone. I like the way you aproach "sultans of swing" !!!!!!!!
what a great sounding and versatile amp.
thanks for an awesome review
1:39 sick clean tone thats awesome
you need a cabinet if it is just the amp head or if it is the combo you dont because a speaker is built in with it
hej proguitarshop! please - could you tell me the settings when andy plays the dire straits song at 1:40 ? thanks!
yes, the 140 what is just means u can play anything up to 100 what on it.
***HELP*** Is there anyway to get a more even volume between the low and the high? It's either too quiet on the low if I set the high volume 1st, or too loud (on the high) if I set the low volume 1st. any suggestions would be GREATLY appriciated!! Thanks!!!
what are the speakers on that cab?
would that head be better with de vntage modern cab or the 1960A?
Thanks for the review..I`m thinking of getting one..I play teles..Your review made easier to decide towards buying one.
I wonder what cabinet (and speakers) he is using. I love the tone, especially with the Tele. Nice job, but tell us what cab you are using!!!
Whats the ohm outputs on this beauty?
I own one of these and love it except one thing...it desperately needs a dedicated volume control for the second channel. The difference in volume from overdriven to clean will make you jump and then scramble for the volume control on your guitar. That said the tone is awesome and very modifiable. Is the song at 4:12 Badge by Cream?
@ProGuitarShopDemos does the distortion of a fulltone fulldrive sound like the distortion of this marshall amp sound same in your opinion
@zeppelinlive1960 Robin Trower uses a Vintage Modern. He's been around awhile. :-)
oh jeez what song is he playing from 1:40 - to 2:09 i can't remember
He never played a plexi...maybe in the early days of Guns N' Roses. He recorded Appetite for Destruction with a modded JCM800 (rented from S.I.R. Studios). im looking for a marshall thatll give me that rhoads and slash tone- im just looking for a head to go with my 1960 cab
Mine doesn't take pedals too well. But, you really don't need pedals. You can dial in all sorts of tones with this amp.
that amp sounds so cool man
he has it cranked up right?
because i can't get that distortion ou of my VM with the MV at 3/4
what settings do you think he's using at the very beginning?
What was that last song in the demo? It sounded like Rage Against the Machine.
i got the compo..it's amazing! truly inspiring
@cessnapilot182
"sultan of swing" is the song's name
great to hear sultans at the begining. It kinda spooked me out since i was thinking how this would sound with Mark Knopfler stuff and he started playing abit of sultans
Can someone tell me how to change the gain level on the amp?
Andy what is your favorite amp to play through?
If I'm right, you'r not using the Vintage Modern cab ?
what is the name of song in the beginning?
Would you recommend this or the 1987x plexi for Blues(The 3 kings ect) and Classic Rock(Zeppelin,Cream,Hendrix)
i would really like to know since Andy has tested so much gear(pedals amps etc), what gear is he using?
hey do any one know which Cabinet he is using with the Marshall V.M.???
nice video, i want to buy a vintage amp but i haven t decided yet between the vintage modern, a plexi or the vintage modern 2466. what is the difference between them???
What are the settings at the beginning (Unchained!), including midboost and master volume? Sounds great!
@MegaFenderstrat The combo version has dynamic range and reverb foot switches, and from the reviews I've seen I think the other 2266 versions are the same.
Hey PGS what tele is that..stock pickups? Cuz it sounds mean
@Macsk8ing Good idea. You have finally saw the light!
