You absolutely nailed it. I'm horribly dissapointed. They disregarded every character development. I braced myself for tragedy, I really did, but that ending? It's just unbeliebably cheap and unworthy of such a great show.
I'm not in this fandom, but I feel for you guys. I'm really glad that you guys spoke up about it. I really, seriously am. I feel like tomorrow's screenwriters are going to get the message that we're sick of the Hollywood Happy ending (Or as I call it, the "It was always you, al along" ending) and if they build up something then cop out with that lazy sort of ending, they can expect a metric ton of well deserved booing.
That was the most insightful review of the HIMYM finale I have seen. You did a great job pointing out how it works but how it doesn't really fit the tone of where the show was at the current time and that the writers basically wrote themselves into a corner which basically forced them to throw away seasons of character development and meaning just so it ended how they originally envisioned. Once again great review.
2 years later and im still mad as heck...this review is spot on. himym was a crutch for me when i was younger and felt out of place, it was my favorite show in the universe, and after the finale i cant even watch it. the whole thing is so tainted from that episode. damn.
I'll buy Robin and Barney getting divorced and the rest of that plot. I'll buy Tracy dying. What I won't buy is Ted going back to Robin. That's because the show is supposed to be about moving on, NOT going back to that girl you haven't spoken to in YEARS.
I think the 9th season should have focused mainly on Ted and the Mom meeting and dating and getting to know each other. Then, towards the end they could have ended it with Ted proposing and the Mother saying yes. Would've been perfect like that.
THANK YOU! You completely took the words out of my mouth about why the finale is just that bad. Everything you said was spot on though one point I would like to bring up is the point about how it was established in the Pilot that Robin is not the mother. And just how refreshing it was that she wasn't and how their relationship was a great portrayal of those relationships that almost were but didn't quite make it. Also, I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who despised Silver Linings Playbook. The whole final third felt like something out of a fanfic.
Watching this episode after years of loving HIMYM taught me a valuable lesson about writing. Something can narratively make perfect sense, but emotionally ring completely false. Which is what happened here.
Thank you so much. I didn't like the idea of Ted getting back with Robin, but I didn't even think about what might happen in the future. But you painted such a vivid word picture, you made this sad finale heartbreaking.
You nailed this. All the decisions they made could've worked had those events been built up and better tone/pacing. (What was up with those kids?) Which makes it all the more baffling when you consider they had this ending planned the whole time. What was the point of even going there with Barney/Robin and spending an egregious amount of time on it when they knew the whole time they'd have to break them up? Why spend all that time developing Barney into a better person if they knew they'd have to knock him down to square one again (don't get me started on the baby)? Why bring up Ted letting Robin go over and over and over and over so that by the time the finale rolls around we're so sick of the idea we'd rather see graphic open heart surgery with a spork than that damned french horn!
Thank you! And that's my point exactly when it comes to the finale. Regardless of my personal preferences (my LEAST favorite character was Ted, so of course I was pissed), this finale pretended to be something it is not, and some people bought it. Some people bought it and they mock everyone who hated it, claiming that the finale "was real" (therefore saying we're idealistic idiots apparently). But the thing is, no it was not. The Finale was not real. Cause the finale wasn't an isolated episode, a short story (because, if it was, then sure it was real). No, it was part of a much bigger plot that lasted for 9 freaking years, the finale was the mere conclusion of it. AND IT DIDN'T MAKE SENSE. It contradicted everything they said for 9 years. Simple as that. But if we don't even want to talk about that, then let's face the facts of what you just said. Considering Ted's and Robin' personalities, would they have lasted after trying to be together one last time? Robin still prioritized her career (which is one of the reasons whe and barney broke up?) she still didn't want kids. Ted had kids already. They haven't changed, they were the same people they were on season 1 (thanks to this /wonderful series finale writing). So, surprise surprise, they would break up after that finale. So what was the freaking point of it? What was the freaking point of it all? What was the meaning of this show and the message they were trying to sell? None. none at all
+Romantic B WRONG. Robin was no longer eager to put her career first as shown in 2030. She had settled into a quiet life in New York and was reconnecting with Ted and his children on an almost regular basis, coming for dinners, Halloween celebrations and taking his kids on outings to the beach and the zoo. And she had finally reciprocated Ted's love for her and realised that he was the one she wanted all along. She also grew from being a person who didn't want kids into a more loving lady who loved Ted's kids and was a de facto stepmother to them. Ted and Robin DID go through a great deal of character development and change and were NOT the same people in the pilot episode. And Robin's reaction at the end said it all; she was so happy and the look they shared was beautiful. So they do end up together, it does work out and NO-ONE can say that it isn't happy or poetic. And the meaning of the show is still very much there, namely that love does take time and it has to be appreciated and cherished in all its forms.
that was a magnificent review. I never thought of how much more meaning it would have put on the ending and its message, if she wouldve closed the window. Because you're EXACTLY right. HIMYM has always been willing to operate in the realm of intense sadness and loneliness. Some may call it sappy, but really it was how Ted really felt. It felt real, and for him to realize that he found someone he loved and had ended up with two kids, and realized he's lived a good life.... That would be a heavy and such a significant ending.
No. That ending would have been a tragic ending, it would have made no sense and also provided no closure for Ted or Robin. The original ending was the correct one in lieu of the earlier storylines and clues dropped in throughout the story.
I completely agree with everything said in this video. The thing that really hit me was where he talked about what would've happened AFTER Ted and Robin got back together. What everyone would've thought and said, how awkward the wedding would've been, etc. Great review
Speaking from the perspective of a Robin who has found herself at the receiving end of a Ted's affection for years and again and again having to turn him down, I found the ending creepy. It was dehumanizing for Robin to be objectified like that, completely disregarding her side of the story because she was shrunk into becoming nothing but the "romantic interest", the pretty girl the hero will always get in the end.
I agree and disagree on Silver Linings Playbook but can't deny your points are valid. I really liked what you said about the HIMYM tone and how the ending just didn't work with what we had invested in the character arcs especially since season 4.
It broke my heart to see that final hour. It completely ruined what would have been the most perfect TV show ever made. I was crying with the idea that my favorite show was about to end, then I saw how it ended and I was like: "well... thanks for making this so much easier, fuck this show. seriously" I mean what the fuck? so much bull shit about meeting their mom and the writters fucking killed her? just so Ted and Robin were together?? my god it's as fucking stupid as it gets What I was expecting from that show was the perfect ending where they were all happy, or at least Ted and Tracy. It was the ending of a beautiful story about how he met the mother of his kids, but nooo... let's turn the caracter that we have all been waiting for into a fucking meaningless joke, just so our master plan of Robin x Ted can happen. That show was my favorite and it could have been perfect. They ruined it, and it seriously hurts that I had to put up with some much bull shit in the middle just to see that ending, I mean seriously fuck you writters.
excellent review, although I am curious to see the alternate ending that will be on the dvd, there were so many ways to end this show, so I am curious to see what else the creators filmed.
From what they've said so far, it looks like the "alternate ending" just shows new pointless scenes, like Robin singing in Ted and Tracy's wedding as Robin Sparkles. And also a scene of Tracy's funeral, which is nice, but if the writers think that will fix the ending, they completely missed the point of the fans' complaints.
I loved the show, have watched more than 5 times each episode....more like 10-12. But what frustrates me is the plot holes. Like barneys brother telling barney he's getting married, shows him the picture, and it is a different person introduced in a later episode. The fact that the makeup they use on old lilly and old marshall is ridiculously too fake. Then how Ted was crushed by Robin when time and time again she told him she didn't love him, and still gives her another chance, is unbelievable. The worst part is, there were scenes more romantic then the last episode littered throughout the series. Also, they should have delved deeper into Barney's loneliness i think. But even with the small amount they showed, to have him end up alone at the end was disgusting. And the last season was basically done in a previous season minus the marriage part. On top of everything, Mosby deserves to be single. He was an asshole, a lovable asshole throughout the series. He stole champagne, he ruined relationships, the worst of which was stealing a bride. He self destructed the possible relationship with the girl from the pineapple incident, he could have just been honest instead of trying to have both relationships... IDK, Personally the ending kind of devalued previous seasons. The best thing to do would be watch up until the 9th season and make up your own ending, because this one stunk.
What we got in the final wasn't the problem, it's how it was presented. The final felt like it was multiple episodes combined into one. So much happens with no build up/pay off, Barney and Robin get divorced, the gang drifts apart, Barney gets a girl pregnant, Tracey just dies out of no where, and Ted ends up with Robin. It would not be so bad if there where things leading up to it and we got to see the results.
I agree with everything you said about the finale. I felt disappointed, because i know, that if they changed the story they originaly designed (because it doesn't logicaly makes sense with the character development in season 7, 8 and 9) it would've been better, even if it doesnt have an happy ending. But they decided they would go the inicial ideia, and it ruined the show. This final season NO ONE is going to watch a wedding that goes nowhere in the first 10 min of the finale. It's just a waste of time.
I liked Silver Linings Playbook, but it did bother me how in the end they made it seem like everything was magically solved. I didn't mind them getting together, but if they had at least acknowledged that they were still going to be struggling with their respective issues I would have liked it a whole lot more.
Like the vid, BUT a tipp for the next video: Try not to use music with text to underline your review - they mix up with your voice and make it kinda hart to concentrate on the real review. I would recommend using either a loop without a text or just a textless song or piece.
Wow, I never though about how things would go further down the line. It truly does go from sad to heartbreaking. Ted and Robyn just wouldn't go the distance.
Great show. I agree with most of your points. Another point that I'd like to add is that I don't think this finale could work at the end of Season 2-4. Hell! I don't think it could work even after 12 SECONDS INTO THE PILOT, after Luke's (Ted's son) "Are we being punished for something?" line! Ted's kid's attitude is one of the tonal aspects of the show that indicated most clearly that this finale just couldn't work. No kid would behave like Ted's children in a situation like that, unless they were a pair of high-functioning sociopaths. And no, the fact that 6 years have passed doesn't make it OK. Actually, it makes it even worse, since it means their mother died when they were little kids. Seriously, how messed up is that?! In short, the way they encourage Ted to ask Robin out, coupled with the way the Mother is killed off, it makes everything feel like something out of a Ted&Robin fan fiction, rather than from professional writers. The more I think about it, the more I realize that, if this was really the ending the writers wanted to make from the very beginning, then the show was doomed from the start. Allow me to elaborate: The story of a widower who gets back together with the love of his youth after her beloved wife dies is a good idea. But in the end, it turned out that the show's now legen... I'm-not-gonna-make-you-wait-for-it-oh-wait-I-just-did...dary framing device, as great and unique as it was, it also was completely wrong for that story. You can't build up a character all the way from the goddamn title just to drop a bridge over her and say "Surprise! It was always about the character we presented as the false romantic lead!" and expect people to buy it! Which makes the whole finale debacle even more tragic, since the framing device is what allowed the show to execute its narrative genius in its most memorable episodes. And to make it even worse, it looks like a lot of people won't learn any lessons with this, since it seems the discussion is centering, either about cynic rants about people bitching for not getting the ending they wanted, or (sic) shipping wars between Ted/Robin and Ted/Tracy shippers. Wow, that definitely took longer than I expected! I hope I did add something of value to the debate. :P Again, congratulations for your video. Probably the best HIMYM video-review I've seen so far. :)
+XanderVJ IS it of any coincidence that Bob Saget's most famous role prior to HIMYM was that of a widower who was bringing up three little girls while also trying to fall in love again and move on from the sad demise of his wife and mother of his daughters? What children wouldn't want their parent to be happy again? With 6 years having passed since Tracy's death it was more than ample time for the children to have moved on and it's harsh to say that it isn't ok. Also, there was never really that much of a build-up for the mother since she wasn't really mentioned in the beginning and for most of the story. The title is a little bit of misdirection and I think it worked well. And there are always lessons to be learnt from any television series, namely about love, friendship, cherishing the moments that you have with one another and also about appreciating life for what it is, a roller-coaster.
I had to watch bunch of robin/ted episodes to finally accept the ending, but even through i knew they were going to alway be together, I thing her and Barny would of had more sense
I Loved the finale of HIMYM, personally I think it does makes a lot of sense. Barney did find the love of his life, something that deeply he was really looking for, his baby daughter. Some men are like that in real life, the love of their lives isn't a romantic partner, and they change after having a daughter. Lily and Marshall showed to be the couple that loved each other so much through ups and downs, like some couples I know that been together for years in real life, and that truly love each other. Ted and Robin, they were meant to be together in the end.... some relationships are like that, when you belong with someone, no matter what happens in the end you will be with them. Sometimes you want different things but that doesn't mean you don't love the person, even tho you get confused at times or think you don't love someone anymore or even married someone else...Nothing is said in life...everything can change, thats why i loved the show, cause is very real and funny. Ted loved the mother but she wasn't the love of his life... it always was Robin... I think i loved the ending cause it reminds me of "Love in times of cholera" Gabriel Garcia M's novel... were at the end of their lives florentino and fermina ended up together... But I know for some people the end didn't full filled their expectations... =) either nor its ok ! Thanks for sharing your perspective ^^ !
I don't know if it's just me but... I really loved Tracy and I wanted a happy ending. I didin't liked when Barney and Robin got divorced, because I loved them together... Then I found out that Tracy died... And after that Ted went back to Robin.. I didin't liked it either. I thought the finale was going to be really nice story how Lily and Marshall was living happily with kids, Barney and Robin living Legendary life, maybe adopting a baby and Ted with Tracy telling kids how they met and how they all are gonna live happily ever after :)
I'm still kind of on the fence about the ending. For such a smart and well written show, the ending was just rushed and hollow. I still love the show nonetheless and it will always be one of my favorites.
The problem, for me, with the death of the mother is that the writers played us! For 8 seasons she was a plot device and then in the last season she bacame an actual charater that we know. Then in the last 10 minutes of the last episode, she returned to "plot device" mode. I totally agree that they disregarded and threw to the trash part of the history of the characters and highlighted what they wanted. Just a sad (literally and figuratively) ending to a great show.
u were right, this damn "happy" ending would bring "sadness" afterwards it killed me when they destroyed the characters i loved, the meaning of this whole serie!
I'd like to say Kudos for that review Your right I was bracing myself for some kind of sad ending like Ted dying or Ted crying and telling that he still can't get over the fact that the mother died or he still wants to see her after all this years but they made it cheap especially by doing the scene where his kids tell him things like that They should've at least made another scene with the kids in 2040 where they've grown (present david henry and penny) and they tell ted that they've heard that story so many times and it's time to say goodbye or something like that because ted is dying or something Your review was Legen wait for it Dary up to the end not like HIMYM
I agree with you- most of my friends agree that if the show went on ted and robin would've broken up anyway.... also this show claims to be realistic but its really not
I do not know why, but I liked the ending, because the series teaches us that life is not always perfect, life has ups and downs, and it does not always turn out as we expect it, this is reflected in Tracy's death, leaving a good message, this message, is that we should enjoy every moment with the person we love the most, because nobody knows what could happen tomorrow, in 3 days, in a week. Do you agree?
The idea of the finale was not a last minute thing. They've filmed all the scenes with the kids including the ones in which they told Ted to ask aunt Robin out alread in the second story. You might like or hate the ending but it was there all along.
I came in at the beginning of season 9. and some how seen watched every episode before the finale only using my DVR and multiple channels that aired reruns. when I shawl the finale I felt like I had wasted hours of my life. I hated the finale but love the show. it was basically Mass Effect 3 all over again.
The way I see it is that the mom was really the love of his life, and more than likely through those 6 years he's been telling his kids how things were when she was around and how much he loved her. But when he tried to tell them all the stories that lead up to he meeting Tracy and, for the sake of the series, his own development, he was, at each step, remembering Robin and his past love for her more and more, until, without realizing it the story centered on her. To me the story between Ted and Robin started like a whim on his part and evolved to a love story through the series. Maybe every "episode", at the time he was telling his story, he was unconsciously falling in love with Robin once again with the help of his loneliness, persuading himself that she was still an option. As of the ending, I think that it wasn't that unlinked with the series, in my mind what followed was a long conversation with Robin about his disregard of the consequences of him appearing like that at that moment and then her bringing him back to reality, after that he leaves her apartment realizing that their time has long been gone and that if he had let go of her that time was for a good reason. I can see that happening and I could also have understood why he would try to cling to what little he may think he still had, that's the Ted that we see most of the time. But I must agree that the intended picture was that of him ending up with Robin, and that durely contradicts most of the last seasons of the series.
Wait. So the first season was when the kids mother was dead for maybe a couple months/ a year and Ted started telling them their story he was still really in love with robin? Or that he really wanted to ask robin out again that he started that story to justice for a relationship with robin? That's kind of messed up. It's like "oh dam my wife has been dead for a few months, imma move on to this women who always rejected me, but first! A 6 year story to justify my action"
Interesting Take on the Ending. I don't know If I'm in your camp. Personally I think it works. Ted has ALWAYS seemed like the character who wouldn't really understand why he was doing something. And throughout that episode, Robin is getting the career she's always wanted. And it's leaving her hollow inside. Cobie smulders does an amazing job at subtlely cuing to the audience that sense of getting everything she ever wanted, and being utterly miserable for it (Something Ted has pointed out in the past) Barnies baby? Well yeah that was a plot device no way around that. Especially with the girl in question being nameless. But it honestly feels to me like it works for his character. There was no way he could have been anchored down any other way. Though Silver Linings Playbook? That was not a standard Hollywood happy ending by any stretch of the imagination. Even in the closing narration he acknowledges how f*cked up the two of them are. The wording there is key. He says that "For now, everything is good" Key words. For Now. He knows the chances of this working out are slim at best. But the point is to enjoy the moments of happieness that do exist. Thats how you find a Silver Lining. Just my opinion anyways
I don't care I love the ending... I always wanted him with Robin... All though I even accepted the new mother and kinda got used to the thought of Robin and barney I still wanted to to end up with Robin so I am satisfied.... If you think about it we got 9 years to like Robin and see her character grown because ted told us the story that way.... The reason why we did really care about the mother because she was hardly in it is because ted told us the story that way, so in that way we should feel how ted feels and well ted wanted Robin all that time and to be honest so did we!
***** Best Comment I've Watched... Linked it to IMDB: Himym... Bays and Thomas did not get their happy ending either, CBS dropped How I Met Your Dad. Inspite of being a sure green light. I hope you post an update to this Special comment in light of HimyD canceled.
How about this, after Ted takes the blue french horn and tries to get Robin back, she shakes her head and closes the window like you said. Cut back to Ted as it starts to rain. Then along the street a yellow umbrella floats down to him, a sign that he already had the perfect wife. He then drops the blue french horn. The End
I was reading this fanfict the other night there this girl made that ending more of a plot to tell you how robin ended up with barney and still have a child and thus they had their happy ending. This might have been bad to say but I didn't like Tad, I mean I thought he was a nice guy and all but he fell for every single woman including robin and it just got old. With barney and robin it was different. Unless most of the girls Barney was with, Robin was different she was stronger and was the other half Barney needed.
I believe you did not get what the show is about. The show is not about people "growing", or "changing", or any similar holywood bullshit. The story is about friendship and, as strange as it may seem to you, it is about licking Liberty bells and about goats in bathrooms... It is about living your life to full, and remembering _every moment_ in it, remembering _every person_ you met. Because nothing lasts, people die, split up, divorce - and, after all, when you are old, your life consists only of your memories, which can be never taken from you...
Though it's not the ending I would have loved to have seen, it did bring the story full circle. In older Ted's mind, he started the story with how he met Robin because that is where the road to meeting the mother started(no Robin, no Robin and Barney. No Robin and Barney, no wedding. No wedding, no meeting the mother). However, his kids were also right; it was a long, drawn out story confessing his feelings for their Aunt Robin. But there’s a difference between your 'true love' and your 'soul mate'. Ted and Robin were in love at first sight, but weren't truly happy together because they wanted different things in life; Ted wanted to settle down and have kids, while Robin wanted to focus on her job and didn't want kids. When Ted met Tracy(the mother), he met his soul mate, the one person who he could truly be his nerdy, quirky self with and have his family with. And with his heart finally able to have the wife and kids he always wanted, his feelings for Robin were pushed to the VERY back of his mind. Once the mother died however, Robin came back into his life more often and therefore back into his mind. We see that Robin has an apartment in New York and once again has a mass of dogs, so we can assume that she's stopped traveling for work like she used to. Therefore, it is the perfect time for her and Ted to get together: Ted had his dream of the perfect wife and great kids, and Robin had her dream of traveling the world and becoming a famous reporter. Now that they've done the things that were keeping them apart, there's nothing holding them back from being together. They were destined to be together …just not when they first met.
It's why season 9 is so drawn out; it shows just how perfect Robin and Barney are together...at that time. But when Robin gets the chance to travel for work, she puts her job before her marriage and that ultimately leads to its end. Barney reverted back to his scum-bag ways because that's his safety net; he did it after his and Robin's first go, he did it after Nora broke up with him and then again after he and Quinn broke up. The only thing able to change him for good was his one true love, the birth of his daughter. As for Ted and Tracy, sadly, 'Happily Ever After' isn't always 70, 80, 90 years down the road, and after six years, Ted realizes he is finally able to move on. If he wanted to tell the kids only about how he met Tracy, he could have started the story on the day of Robin and Barney's wedding, but instead started with the day he met Robin. 2030 Ted is retelling his entire story because he is convincing himself that, no matter how deep he buried them so that he could be happy with Tracy, his feelings for Robin are still there. And now that he is finally able to let go of Tracy(like Tracy was finally able to let go of Max), those feelings are coming back out. Even Penny and Luke say that they've seen the way he and Robin look at each other. And after hearing their father's full story, why wouldn't they want him to finally be happy again?
I love this show its my favorite I just watched it for the sixth time. I like season 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 the most season 8 was okay the ending and season 9 sucked I hated the ending. I heard they talked about bringing Robin back together half way though the show.
Excellent Review. By re-watching the series. If I've learn anything from HIMYM things never go according to plan (Stella, Robin, Marshall's dad died, Barney's Family, Lily plans, etc.). Never. It's basically Murphy's Law. What will go wrong can (or will) go wrong. The finale basically sums that up with Tracy's death. I will admit the last 5 mins when Ted goes for Robin again is complete BS. But it's a beautiful ending. At first watch, us as fans got to say it was very disappointing. If you clearly re-analyze the series you will give the finale a other chance. I now see the beauty of the ending and I accepted it. I love HIMYM and it's sad to see it go. It was Legend.... Wait for it..... dary...
I partially agree with you but may I add ? I think if you really gave friends a chance like you gave himym a chance you would really enjoy it ;)! Just a suggestion
Hated this season and the ending. Several years later I still do. If it had skipped all the filler in dumb episodes they could have shortened the show by 1 season to start with. At the final season half of the show could have been about the wedding (no damn roadtrip with Daphne) and the other half about Ted and Tracy falling in love and Tracy becoming best friend with the group etc. I dont mind Barney and Robin breaking up, but it is the way they do it that is annoying. They take forever to get married but break up in like 1 episode!? Give it time bro!
Yea but I think they ended it with a happy ending because 1. they're not going to end the show off on a complete sad note, and 2. they've put Ted through a lot of hell in the show and I think it worked out with him finally ending up with the love of his life at the end, because it was years later, and on a realistic note, they changed. In my opinion the finale was better then I thought it was gonna be. But anyways nice video, I dropped a like, not going to hate on you for your opinion. :)
As you said, on paper the finale is good, but the season 9 felt so long. The weeding should have been 2~3 episodes, later i can only ask who cares about the mother?
+João Antonio Carvalho definitely, the idea was realistic, sure, and even good to a point , but the execution, the execution...was...just...horrible, I cant even begin to describe, a whole season wasted, A WHOLE FUCKING SEASON WASTED!! its unbelieveable how the writers broke the show, its unrepairable, they made it unwatchable, zero re-watchability value, zero.
For someone who is supposedly a fan of the show he got so many things wrong. Ted and Robin had the single at 40 pact in Season 4 not Season 2. Ted didn't just turn up at Robins apartment out of the blue. She had been going to Teds for dinner regularly which is why the kids were ok with it and encouraged it. Ted dying or even being dead! WTF
It just felt like they planned a season 10 originally... Then decided not to do it and didn't change the story to fix that... But you know they pushed a season into 2 episodes
good review..It was a cheap ending...at least we will always have that great scene under the yellow umbrella..the show went backwards imo the moment it recycled the love triangle beween barney/ted/robin.. If they were going to develop those other characters in relationships, it shouldnt have been with each other as it also ruined the comedy of the show..The mother was brilliant and they could have easily put her in a season earlier.. If she was gonna die, it should have been a tearjerker rather than a precursor to jumo straight back into ted and robin..Still feel cheated we neither got that emotional or happy ending
I don't really watch the show - I've seen maybe 20 episodes probably out of order - but I think I understand what's going on especially as someone living me does watch it. So it's bit unfair of me to comment on HIMYM but I did love this review as a review. Delivered with coherence, intelligence and feeling it shows what happens when the last episode of a programme ultimately (well it is the last episode) disappoints. It's like you've had a wonderful meal but the sweet has left a bad taste in the mouth - really annoying. It's like one of those chick flicks where a guy meets a girl, who start off perfect and then this other man comes in. She gets swept of her feet and then realises that she really loves the original guy. He finds out, or she might even tell him, and he comes back to her because he really loves her. NO! She's treated him like nothing and stamped on his feelings, but because we must have a happy ending the man becomes a dishcloth. And he doesn't get over it in any period of time, it's always more or less immediately. That's just an example but I hate how shows and films just bang these endings on without any respect to the audience because somebody somewhere has told them this works - well it doesn't seem to have here. Great review.
why ted and robin couldn't be together and all your examples happened for a reason an also happened 17 years ago or so...so it makes sense, they ended up together. anything else, i'm kinda with you
You absolutely nailed it.
That's because the show is supposed to be about moving on, NOT going back to that girl you haven't spoken to in YEARS.
ummmmm they did speak?
I think the 9th season should have focused mainly on Ted and the Mom meeting and dating and getting to know each other. Then, towards the end they could have ended it with Ted proposing and the Mother saying yes. Would've been perfect like that.
I agree with everything you said. You articulated perfectly why I hate the finale! Thank you.
Great review and you are a very good speaker.
Great review! In my opinion, the HIMYM finale was actually worse than every "Twilight" movie.
Thank you so much. I didn't like the idea of Ted getting back with Robin, but I didn't even think about what might happen in the future. But you painted such a vivid word picture, you made this sad finale heartbreaking.
6 years later, still my favorite review of HIMYM's ending.
probably one of the best reviews of the show I've seen
You really should do those special comments more often, you're great at it.
I have watched a lot of reviews on this topic and I can honestly say this is my favorite one!:) ❤️👏
I couldn't agree more.
I was crying with the idea that my favorite show was about to end, then I saw how it ended and I was like: "well... thanks for making this so much easier, fuck this show. seriously"
I mean what the fuck? so much bull shit about meeting their mom and the writters fucking killed her? just so Ted and Robin were together?? my god it's as fucking stupid as it gets
What I was expecting from that show was the perfect ending where they were all happy, or at least Ted and Tracy.
Same for me. I watched the shoe everyday for like 3 years and now after the finale I haven't seen one episode. The finale killed my favorite tv show
Fantastic review. You've made numerous points. You've earned my subscription. Why oh why did Tracy have to die. Like you said-she became a character!
Nailed it! Thanks for the brilliant and well researched review
excellent review, although I am curious to see the alternate ending that will be on the dvd, there were so many ways to end this show, so I am curious to see what else the creators filmed.
I don't wanna binge watch this show anymore, that's because of the disappointing finale
OH MY GOD YOU ARE PERFECT
this man is really reasonable
6 years later this perfectly encapsulates what I feel about that ending
I have no idea why I’m watching this, seeing how I’ve never seen the show and this is 6 years old. But this is really good
I liked Silver Linings Playbook, but it did bother me how in the end they made it seem like everything was magically solved.
Allow me to elaborate:
The story of a widower who gets back together with the love of his youth after her beloved wife dies is a good idea.
Again, congratulations for your video.
+Dianita Chiang Well said!!
Just a sad (literally and figuratively) ending to a great show.
love that you suited up
u were right, this damn "happy" ending would bring "sadness" afterwards
it killed me when they destroyed the characters i loved, the meaning of this whole serie!
I'd like to say Kudos for that review
Your right I was bracing myself for some kind of sad ending like Ted dying or Ted crying and telling that he still can't get over the fact that the mother died or he still wants to see her after all this years but they made it cheap especially by doing the scene where his kids tell him things like that
They should've at least made another scene with the kids in 2040 where they've grown (present david henry and penny) and they tell ted that they've heard that story so many times and it's time to say goodbye or something like that because ted is dying or something
Your review was Legen wait for it Dary up to the end not like HIMYM
agreed in all ways.. thanks for saying that out
Sheesh this dude just reinforced my opinion on the finale SO HARD.
I agree with you- most of my friends agree that if the show went on ted and robin would've broken up anyway.... also this show claims to be realistic but its really not
You're wrong about Ted and Robin. There was a scene that was cut from the finale about how she wanted to be with him.
great Speech. I loved this review
Excellent review! Well done!
I don't agree, but hell a good speech!!!! and very smart! u kept me until the end...
That ending seriously pissed me off!
Really great review man.
Thank you! I agree completely.
Best review ever!!!
Alternate finale is out there and coming... Please review *****
You might like or hate the ending but it was there all along.
that was an awesome review well done bro
I came in at the beginning of season 9. and some how seen watched every episode before the finale only using my DVR and multiple channels that aired reruns. when I shawl the finale I felt like I had wasted hours of my life. I hated the finale but love the show. it was basically Mass Effect 3 all over again.
Agreed! They are similiar in such away that you wasted all your time..
And you find out all you worked for is CRAP!
I think. you talk and have Body movements like Marshall Eriksen from.the show
right ? right ?
I always wanted Ted and Robin together, but I agree with you 100%. The tone of the episode was terrible.
And the mother had been dead for 6 years and it would be fine to move on by then..
He llo Not by telling a story about how he still is in love with their aunt robin, in a story about their dead mother.
Six months after March 31st People still talk about the $h!t ending... It still sucks...
What's the name of the first song?
Thanks.
*****
Thank you very much.
Great review by the way, well done !
Brilliant speech bro
Based off this video I'd like to hear his thoughts on other tv shows or movies
You are a good critic buddy
Fuck!!! I wrote this comment at 5 min mark. Now I finished watching. You're brilliant. You should write
Holy crap........ ur right
Though it's not the ending I would have loved to have seen, it did bring the story full circle.
I like the finale.
back when he still talked about movies, music, art and culture; instead of music, movies. art and culture.
good times
+João Antonio Carvalho definitely, the idea was realistic, sure, and even good to a point , but the execution, the execution...was...just...horrible, I cant even begin to describe, a whole season wasted, A WHOLE FUCKING SEASON WASTED!! its unbelieveable how the writers broke the show, its unrepairable, they made it unwatchable, zero
re-watchability value, zero.
WTF
you suited up !
It's water under the bridge now...but you have a point.
It just felt like they planned a season 10 originally... Then decided not to do it and didn't change the story to fix that... But you know they pushed a season into 2 episodes
About Barney changing... Child > Wife
good review..It was a cheap ending...at least we will always have that great scene under the yellow umbrella..the show went backwards imo the moment it recycled the love triangle beween barney/ted/robin..
You just get me
I don't really watch the show - I've seen maybe 20 episodes probably out of order - but I think I understand what's going on especially as someone living me does watch it.
It's like he called the defenders' opinions before it happened.
why ted and robin couldn't be together and all your examples happened for a reason an also happened 17 years ago or so...so it makes sense, they ended up together. anything else, i'm kinda with you
That is very mean things like that can happen my grandad died but my Granma still found her happy ending....................
Am I the only one who noticed he speaks like marshal , I mean even the body language is exactly the same! :D
