    Very informative....well done! This makes me wish I still had my woodstove, (have converted to pellet stove a few years ago), nothing beats a wood burning fire.

    Although I have checked my chimney pipes, I 've never actually got out the brush to run it up and sown the chimney. In the burning season, and once a week, I open my primary vent, bypass the catalytic wafer, build up a lot of heat in the stove to get the chimney hot enough to burn any possible creosote out of the pipes. I checked last year after ten seasons of use and had no build up at all. Also, I have ALWAYS used seasoned wood, never 'green' wood.

    I agree. My parents never burned their woodstove below 375...usually it was in the 400-425 degree range.

    Properly seasoned softwoods are perfectly useable in wood stoves. They have much less heat stored per cubic foot because they are lighter - there's more air in softwood.

    @magna59, If air seems to be rushing out when the door is opened it may be a sign of creosote build-up. So if you notice more smoke than usual in the room you will want to inspect the chimney for significant build-up or tarry black creosote instead of the normal flaky brown that is achieved with proper firing techniques.

    Most of he expert articles I've read over the past few years seem to indicate that on non catalytic wood stoves, the damper should never be closed down when the stove is in use. The reason for this is it allows the chimney to cool which encourages much more creosote to deposit. These stoves can be controlled from the intake air, and in fact, many today are installed without dampers entirely. Catalytic stoves can use dampers when the combustor is working because that eliminates most of the creosote before it gets to the chimney.

    Good video and stove. I'd even put some aluminum radiator type segments that can be bolted on around the exhaust pipe to get every drop of heat efficiency out. Stoves that you can cook on and make hot water are also nice.

    @994206 Those flexible pipes are known in the U.K as Grade 1 stainless chimney flue.and are generally used as a liner inside an old cracked brick chimney. I don't think that they would last long with heat from this type of fire and they are very expensive. I took down my chimney breast and inserted an 8 ft cast iron and manganise pipe and rebuilt the chimney breast. 7 years later and no problems. I was quoted £1500.00 for installing the flexible pipe, so the effort was well worth it.

    @magna59 General advice is to clean the chimney annually. However if you are burning logs that do contain a lot of moisture this will lead to a creosote build up. This will cause issues around the top of the vent, reducing draft. A reduction in draft will significantly reduce combustion efficiency, meaning less heat and more ash. Hence why its not a good idea to burn wet logs.

    I have been using a fireplace insert w/ a blower to heat here in Indiana. I burn about 7 to 8 cords a year. I am wondering if a freestanding stove like this would be better as far as heating goes. Any thoughts?

  • @ArmandBlenker
    @ArmandBlenker 10 років тому +53

    I would add put a pot of water on the stove to keep moisture in the air.

    Thank you for the reply....great help. It seems to be a compromise, if it's two effeciant I suppose the exhaust will be too cold and the non combustables will condense out more? Regards Bob

    I like the thermal fans and FYI after awhile you can tell the temp of your wood stove just by looking at that fan.....(you will know how fast the fan runs whens its between the optimal temps)

    @lostindiancamp they are just powered by heat, they are not electric, hot air rises etc etc...thermal dynamics spin the blades reflecting the heat outwards, if you were to put your fingers in this, I think it wont hurt you, they are not forceful

    as for the life span of a wood stove. i think your wrong on the 20 year thing... i have a modern glenwood wood parlor wood stove model # 223 that is from 1908 it still heats my garage (24x32 garage) great with no issues! the average temp i get in the garage is 77 degs. so what is the life span of a good wood stove?? I think not 20 years?? thanks for this great video Melissa :-) feed back on the life span would help me. Should i replace the stove? as you can tell its been well maintained. ur cute

    You didn't talke about dual burn chamber which is really what prevents creosote build up.

  • @bozzojoe
    @bozzojoe 13 років тому +1

    @SUPERPHANTAZM That depends on the size and efficiency of the stove and the type of wood you are burning.

  • @gsbacorn

    @LehmansHardware If air rushes out the the door when it is opened, you should not be using the wood burning stove at all! I have used my wood burning stove for four years now with no problems. It's secondary heat, burned occasionaly. About 2 cords a year. I use a chain to rattle around the chimney every year or two to clean it out and it works excellent. If you only burn good cured, dry wood, you can go much longer then that.

    300 degrees isn't hot enough. You'll get too much smoke and poor burning at 300 degrees. I burn in the 450-550 degree range.

    Did you mention cleaning the stack pipe?

  • @chimneygeorge
    @chimneygeorge 12 років тому +1

    The controls at the bottom are for air intake, damper controls are usually above burn area. Some systems have a damper in the first exhaust pipe.
    Cleaning is based on how much wood burned, type of wood and burn habits. For soft wood, I recommend cleaning at 1-2 cords of wood. Hard woods can go a bit more you may be able to burn up to 5 cords between sheduled cleanings. If you are unsure how long its been, have some one check it out.

    Ok video but too much emphasis on safety (should be obvious to any thinking person)rather than how a woodstove works, various designs, etc. There were however good points, ie. use of stove thermometer, fan, etc.
