    We bought this stove back in 2004, they looked even better back then. It was not cheap, but like you said, when you are going to be looking at it year round, it is worth it. That was my biggest reason for spending the money. We have never regretted spending the extra money. It has been trouble free the whole time we have had it.

    I'm here because I just spent a few days in the Adirondacks in a secluded cabin of friends and used their wood stove which I took note is a Hearthstone. I'm not real experienced with operation of them, but it was easy to light, and it only had one air adjustment which took the guesswork out. It did take quite a while to get warm and for the fan to come on, but once it did it was so easy to adjust and manipulate to just the right setting. I loved it and after experiencing that and watching your video now I want one of my own!! My friend's young Lab took right to laying in front of it and feeling right to home.

    Just had this exact stove installed a few weeks ago. Had some issues lighting especially as I vent out the back …was having draft issues. Found a forum and learned a few tricks with the stove and it now works great. Was unsure of the side load but love it now. A little late to the party. You were spot on with everything. My parents have this same stove except the side door is on the right. The spring on the hinge of the side door did fail but the replacement has been working great. They use two 100 CFM Eco fans on the top to move air. My dad says the best overnight burns are with red oak. Nice bed of coals in the morning and very little ash once it‘s all spent. 👍

    • @SilverLiningDayDreams
      @SilverLiningDayDreams  6 місяців тому +1

      I totally agree!
      The first 2 or 3 years we had the stove we would go up to our sister’s house where they have seasoned downed red oak trees and we would use our brother in laws log splitter and bring home split wood in our trailer. And yes we have found also, that red Oak is the best to burn. We can get blue flames sometimes with it.
      And dittos on less ash.
      Unfortunately, because I’ve been in and out of the hospital lately, we haven’t been able to have any fires, so looking forward to getting the wood burner going again.
      A must when handling red oak is gloves we’ve found or ouch with the slivers 😂

    I have the exact same stove and agree with you that it's amazing! I've owned, and operated, over 6 different brands of stoves in my life, and this one is by far the best hands down, and also really nice to look at. I get many compliments on it.
    Just this season, I have started using the ash drawer though. Like you, I didn't use it for many years for the same reasons. However, now I love using it. About every other morning, when it's cooled down, I will put on a glove, open the ash door, grab the inner grate slider handle and pull it open. Then open the side door and use my poker and stir up the ash (which you'd do anyway to get it going again). The fine ash will fall into the pan below, and leave the larger coals. The ash pan will now be 3/4 full, and can easily be dumped. It will hold about 2 typical shovel's worth of ash. The key is to do it regularly. I find it much less messy in the long run, and the stove breathes better with a consistent ash layer.

    I see your thermometer is on the top of the stove... That's about the high end of what we observe on our Mansfield model 8013 (~350F is more common with the blower off), however, the sides routinely get to 600F-700F if the blower is not running. I installed the blower kit to help keep those surface temps lower and better regulate the overall burn cycle. The blower extends the burn cycles as it prevents the stove temps from peaking as high, which coincides with peaking draft force... Also get a bit more heat into the house for the same wood consumption. I agree the blower is noisier than it should be for how expensive it is. I think the blower looks like a $40 thing but they charge about 10X that for it.

    I've been leaning toward a Blaze King Ashford, but I have to say I'm intrigued by this one. I kind of like the idea of a more gradual heat. I actually don't like hot rooms at all and so I want something that's a bit more easily regulated and if anything under capacity. It wouldn't even be the main heat source, but something to take that chill off the air on a damp cold night or in deep winter.

      I’ve known two people that had a blaze king and they loved them. If our house was set up such to have it nicely fit well I would have been tempted to put one in. Hard choice. You can regulate the temp on the blaze king somewhat too. There’s tradeoffs either way

      Don't be worried about "overheating a room" with a Blaze King stove. The Blaze King is the only stove on the market with a patented self-regulating, bimetal activated air inlet door which will actually adjust the air intake according to how you set it. At night : Turn the dial back to low and the stove regulates the amount of "burn" to very low for an extremely long burn time. In the morning : turn the dial up to half or full and the flames come up a little or a lot (high). Obviously, more air allowed in will burn the wood faster but will produce a ton of heat. Mid-morning : turn the dial back to medium or low. Blaze Kings have the cleanest burning, longest burning, most efficient & most convienent stoves on the market. Not only that but if the catylitic combuster ever needs replacing (like 3-10 years, depending) they are probably the least expensive on the market and can be replaced in 5 minutes. It's that easy. I've got a Blaze King Ashford 30 coming in a few months. Can't wait! My friends adore theirs.

      Sorry to take so long to answer this; we were talking some time off camping.
      There’s many variables to consider such as square footage, outside temps, insulation, and more so it’s hard for me to give a specific answer. In some circumstances it’s possible. Some (to be on the safe side) add a mini spit or something to augment their wood stove on those frigid Jan or Feb days where there may be one of those frigid arctic cold spells.
      *You may want a backup heat source to keep pipes from bursting if you go on vacation or something I🥲in the winter time*.

    Im in the market for a stove at the moment and I'm wondering if techniques have improved regarding the front window getting blackened. My parents have a woodburning stove in their livingroom, that they never use anymore, because it was such a nuisance with the window being black after every time they had it on for an evening. My dad now has a huge industrial model in the back of their farmhouse. This has been connected to the floor heating system, that basically heats the entire farmhouse and it also provides warm water. So it's very effective, but lacks a certain personality, as its not actually in the home, but back in the barn and it closes completely, so no flames are visible. Its not a stove to cosy up to on cold winter days. And thats what I do want, but minus the daily scrubbing of a completely blackened window.

    • @SilverLiningDayDreams
      @SilverLiningDayDreams  7 місяців тому +2

      It sounds like your parents have a nice set up for function, but we too really like the coziness of watching the fire in the living room. When you go to buy one you ‘ll want to make sure it has what’s called an airwash system that keeps the window clean (I think it might be required with all newer stoves in the last few years).
      Just remember to check and look at some of the reviews of the model you’re planning on buying so you have some feedback from people that actually use the stove.
      Best of luck and let us know how it goes!

    • @SilverLiningDayDreams
      @SilverLiningDayDreams  Рік тому +1

      We try to have ours cleaned and inspected yearly because it gets a lot of use. These soapstone wood stoves are designed to run around 400 degrees. Lower temperatures definitely lead to more creosote. Burning “seasoned” wood is also super helpful in reducing creosote buildup. My sister & her husband heat their home which is a 900 square foot open and high ceiling log cabin with the phoenix and they love it. Congratulations on the new stove; you won’t be disappointed 😊

      Sorry for such a late response to your questions. We purchased the Heritage 8022 In July of 2015 although I don’t think it was installed by the Top Hat until approximately September or October.
      Our insurance company only allows a certified installer to do the install or they won’t insure it. We had to provide proof. We purchased the stove from the Top Hat in Madison WI for a total of $5613.68 which included the stove, chimney, heat shield, fan, and all of the installation.
      The stove by itself cost $3192.00
      At the time, we felt that was quite a lot of money but we don’t regret purchasing it.
      The current stoves are a newer model than ours and more efficient. With everything going on in the world there’s probably demand driving up prices. Not to mention shortages.
      We wish you the best in procuring your stove 😊
      Let us know how it works out!

      In looking around, I'm finding you really can't get any high quality wood stove for less than $4,000. It's a bite in the pocket for sure, but if you think about it, you'd pay that much, at least, for any decent gas furnace or central air unit. It's a serious appliance and one that will last decades with some care.
      The only cheap stoves anymore are like the one in Harbor Freight or the real basic cast iron. Those can fill a role in an off-grid cabin or something, but if you live in a suburb or someplace where you have to buy wood, the high efficiency stove will justify itself before long.

    I see on many of the Hearthstone videos one of the highest rated "Pros" of that brand is the added benefit of a sideloading door. By placing the small-clearance stove in a corner like you did it would be possible - but very inconvienent & awkward - to load from either side. The side door may not even have enough room to open and even if if can open you have to work around a tight corner to load it. Cleaning the ashes would even be worse. Thoughts?

    • @SilverLiningDayDreams
      @SilverLiningDayDreams  Рік тому

      There is plenty of room to open and close the door as well as maneuver big chunks of wood into the stove when using the side door. It is not tight at all. There is also more than enough space for cleaning the ash out through the side door.
      If we could do the install over again we would allow little bit more clearance from the standpoint of having room to add a substrate on the walls such as cement board and tile.
      Hope this makes sense.
      The side door may also be a safer way to add wood as there is less of an opening for sparks to come out through than the larger front door

      @@SilverLiningDayDreams another question for you regarding your installation. What size hearth did you make and what are your measurements from the rear of the stove to the wall corner, the corner of the stove to wall and sides to the wall. After building a stone veneer heat shield wall I’ll be left with a 45” x 45” hearth. Not sure if that would be enough room with the side door. The distance from the back corner to the front of the hearth at a 45 degree angle all the way out is approx 69”.
      Our stove is a 2015 model so the current dimensions are probably a little different than ours so you will want to go to Hearthstone’s website for the current dimensions.
      *Before building and buying anything we used tape to mark out the hearth and we cut out a piece of cardboard for the width and length of the Heritage stove. That way we could move the cardboard template around to get a visual while staying within the proper clearances*
      I suspect your hearth may be too small but make a template of potential stoves and get the stove clearances online.

      Late to the party but for what its worth: We installed our hearthstone in the corner, went with a Mansfield 8013, which makes more sense to me for a corner install as it "looks" better being a square stove in the corner (shallow rectangle stoves look better aligned with the room and load from the side better), and it only loads from the front which is fine with me. Our wood is always filthy with bark and sawdust falling off as I load it so it wouldn't matter if it was being side or front loaded I still have to sweep up to keep a clean hearth.

But on the warranty call I had the guy tear the stove back to the CAT and clean it for me. He found BOTH side panels had NOT been tightened down properly, the side soapstones are mismatched and one of the hinge pins was bent so throwing the door out of alignment with the seal ridge. NOT impressed for the price, but the retailer is keeping their end of the warranty up so far. It IS firing much better now that the sidewalls are correctly mounted. Time will tell. If the stove is around 400 it’s not so bad but there is still smoke. Because I use it as an insert it had to be installed from the back rather than from the top and I don’t know if that is the reason for the smoke. Any ideas/suggestions?

    • @SilverLiningDayDreams

      Merry Christmas!
      I suspect you’re having your problems at least partially, if not totally, due to the stove pipe coming out the back of the stove as well.
      A taller chimney helps create a stronger draft due to pressure differences.
      If possible, try installing a fresh air intake to your wood stove.
      Maybe having more very seasoned kindling to get on it right away may help. But I’m not really sure because I’m not there to see your set up.
      Also, try to feed your stove when there’s more of a difference between the outside and inside temperature as that may help a little.
      I hope this helps some and I hope you can get this resolved, so you can really enjoy that stove without the frustration.

      You are correct. I don’t think the burn time lasts 24 hours or really the way we use the stove past 8 or 9 hours. We load up the stove at night and want the wood burning enough to heat the house rather than smoldering.
      The soapstone can keep putting out some heat over time when the fire goes down and eventually out. There are so many other variables that factor in besides the stove such as home insulation, outside temps and many more. All these manufacturers promise more than what the reality is.
