I think that Drift Phonk should get the same treatment that Quebec does in Canada. Quebec is kind of its own independent province despite still being part of Canada. In the same way, Drift Phonk is becoming its own separate genre despite still being in the Phonk category.
i consider 'phonk' an umbrella term used to group divergent sub genres of lofi hiphop that diverge from southern hiphop stylings, Memphis underground, Miami bass, Atlanta trap that sort of thing
i know im late to the video but i think the real issue here is what is becoming of 'drift phonk'. What i mean is people like | pharmacist, junior ferrari, yung smartrider, tadakatsu |, are different from | ghostface playa, Nissan playa, swerve |, who are even more further more different from | dvrst, lxst cxntury, smokamane | which are waaaaay different from khordhell, kute and whoever else makes these super distorted house heavy 'phonk' tracks. I love that this genre like that one guy said 'has something for everyone' in the form of street, drift, jungle, dungeon rap, synthwave, dnb, drift, Memphis revival, evil shyt, raw beats, and more similar sounding but not the same sounds and genres. However, shit like murder on my mind of the other heavy electrohouse sounding forms of 'phonk' that barely even resemble the drift phonk genre they originate form is where people should start drawing a line. Its honestly wild that people would even prop up shit like 'brazillian phonk' to be something that should be lumped in with phonk. I feel like a lot of the dispute over phonk is people not knowing where to draw a line and the old head Memphis rap enjoyers wanting to push back as much as possible, to the point where they would rather throw out the whole drift phonk sub genre than explain where that line ends.
I had your Xmas Mix playing while I hosted the family dinner at my house. Let's just say they were confused but I saw them grooving to it now and then 😂❤
Personally got into phonk when my friend told me about drift phonk back in 2020, back when drift phonk was still a bit underground. Then i explored the genre further: ghostface playa got me into this way of phonk that soudiere or always proper produces. So basically, ghostface playa made drift phonk, but also had some songs with this smooth trap sound, which then led to the music i still listen to this day.
10:35 This is what I meant by House Phonk isn't Phonk, It's literally House Music (EDM). Heck I think Cowbell Phonk is basically EDM unlike its predecessor Memphis Rap or Horrorcore.
I really never intended to make R&B Phonk though, just trying to mimic the old music. I guess if you are in a phonk scene and then try to make any beat people still call that phonk. Kinda sad lol
It boggles my mind that the fact that DOOMSHOP RECORDS has never been mentioned in this thread. The Mexican Phonk Scene it's HEAVILY INFLUENCED by them, also memphis and southern rap scene plus $uicideboy$ and SCHEMMA POSSE dark trap. When you listen and search for many hours you can realize theres more memphis, horrorcore, doomshop influence than Rare Phonk, yes, there is influence from DJ Smokey and the beginnings of this scene are something similar, but at the end heavy memphis and doomshop style is more present than ever. Fun fact, DJ Siniestro 99, wich is actally the father of the scene, is a huge MC Holocaust/Playa Misery fan of his works. I can asure SINIESTROS CLICKA works shows their influence.
Thats what always says , phonk came from the internet / UA-cam ( just like the ryder Klan music and there inspiration ), and at it begins the trap and trill movement was so intense in it , cause it was what we were able to find on youtube , and this phonk genre will always evolve like this, using new artist vocal and new sample from youtube. like all those "new " 70s 60s vinyl music YT channel thats bring to the phonk some new sounds . Hopefully , the original phonk movement is still alive cause producers are just doing what they want / like without asking too much question to themself. Phonk will never die , but sub genre will multiply. thx dope video bro.
How did I miss the request for the definition. The best one I have is 'layered hip hop remixes'. Shout out my bro DJ Kai for that one But RC° says it's internet music as well
man i discoverde phonk around 2015, and ive been watching it since then, the subgenres creations and stuff, and you did a preaty good analysis that summarize most of it
I think that music you hear from Soudiere, Dj Yung Vamp, Inteus and the many others you'll find on the RarePhonk channel is called vaportrap but i've seen that term be used for different genre's of beats too.
Ayyy let’s go! I’ve been listening to Phonk since 2016, some of my favourites from pre-Drift-supremacy like Cha Cha absolutely slap I’ve just given up on trying to explain, or expect, anyone means anything else than what my answer at 7:14 was. If someone references Phonk, I’ve learned to assume they mean Drift Phonk
And now we also have "Brazilian Phonk/Funk"... when I asked my lil nephew about phonk, he said that he likes it... so I thought songs like Metamorphosis, Murder on my mind, vendetta or smth like that (drift phonk / phonk house)... but no... he showed me "Brazilian Phonk" which I had never heard of before... And the spotify phonk playlist is starting to get full of that Brazilian music...
Brazilian FUNK (not Phonk) is a totally different genre that's been around for decades. Not even remotely related. Unless there is a new wave of producers fusing the two?
Phonk, based on this and your other videos, seems to be in a kinda similar position to a genre I personally adore myself called Bloghaus. That one genre ranges from music like nu disco, electro house, classically influence electronic music, punk rock and metal, and I guess like.. a more calm.. “70s esque” easy listening music? That’s not a genre, but I basically mean The Carpenters, but with an electronic twist, and loads more. It also seems to have started around a similar time to the origins of Phonk too, around the 90s kinda.. it can be argued that it was started by Daft Punk, though again, you couldn’t tell Daft Punk “I like that bloghaus music you make” as they’d also have no idea what that is Daft Punk made a form of music called French Touch, a genre defined by its four on the floor beat and heavy use oft short, choppy samples. The term and genre, “Bloghaus”, only got created properly in the 2000s thanks to the birth of blogging sites like MySpace, Blogspot, Blogger etc that would share all this music. (Such a cool experience reading someone’s old abandoned blog site from the 2000s, and hearing these producers they were on about) back then, these blog sites were often ruled by names such as Justice, SebastiAn, The Bloody Beetroots and more. Nowadays the genre is kinda dead honestly, not much is being made for the genre aside from a few solo artists like myself. Although.. it seems like a resurgence is possibly starting thanks to artists like Poetically, Damon. R, The Hellp, and 2Hollis. As well as old pioneers of the genre making a comeback, such as Lemaitre, Justice, Wolfgang Gartner and more.
most songs are some subgenre of phonk for example phonk house, drift phonk or wave phonk phonk itself is very close to memphis rap from what i can tell
The reason that I think hat your definition is not great is because although it is an INCLUSIVE definition, it is not an EXCLUSIVE definition. It does not exclude many other genres of internet music. All phonk music is internet music, but not all internet music is phonk music. IMHO a proper definition needs to exclude more than yours does.
For me, Phonk is just Russian rock music but more beats? You can't call Phonk Dubstep since I think Dubstep's beats move faster, I'm comparing all of this by beats and bass basically
He didn't call Phonk Dubstep. He said that what happened to Phonk is very similar to what happened to Dubstep years ago. Also Dubstep isn't really faster. The general tempo for Dubstep is 140 BPM
No. Phonk is the blanket term and all those sounds you're talking about are what we know as subgenres. Just like metal, math, prog, jazz, it's just the same.
this the 5th time you mentioned phonk in your channel yokai 😠 its clear you're just milking the scene for some reason 😤 i expected more from a guy like you yokai, i dont know why you have this affinity on this phonk thing 🙄🙄🙄
