Update: You can bake in a LUT in a roundabout way. After importing the LUT, turn Log Shooting to the Off setting. Then select PPLUT1 (or whichever one you want) in the picture profile. This uses Slog 3 as the base somehow. Big thanks to Aaron LensMe for sharing!
So the new base ISO of 800? Or the old one of 640 (since EI is off)?
@@sergioandremusic From what I can tell, it still has a base ISO of 640 in Log off or Flexible ISO and 800 in Cine EI. This makes me think that the base ISO has always been 800 in this camera.
Does this fix the no 4k output to NINJA V?
@@CVFILMSLLC Yes, I provided an answer to the question you posted.
@@CVFILMSLLC I am having the 4K output issue as well, do you know of a fix?
Fantastic breakdown Josh! Thanks for sharing and explaining so clearly how these new power cinema grade features work. They are new to me and I learned a lot! All the best, Jay
Thanks Jay!
Thanks mate! Great update!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic Video, the best so far from all on this topic!!! Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video! Time to explore these new menus and Cine EI
Thanks! Have fun!
Thanks, I finally understood it!
Thanks, very informative. I’m looking forward to the Cine EI video.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Great job Josh, exactly the type of breakdown I was looking for.
Thanks! Glad you found in helpful!
Thank you ! I've looked at several videos about the new firmware - after installing it and thinking WTF??? This was the clearest and most thorough explanation I've found.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Informative Videos.... Big potential for this channel dont find this anywhere easy.
Thank you for the kind words! I have been having a lot of fun starting this channel and building a community.
Great explanation Josh. Really well done.
Thanks Chris!
Great video. So glad you detailed where to put the Luts on the SD card. I had to figure it out via trial and error. Putting it in this video is going to be very helpful for others. I could not find the info anywhere on how to do that.
Thank you! Yeah, that wasn't obvious so I thought it would be good to share. Thanks for watching!
We have a problem. Update 2.0 broke audio recording on two different FX3 cameras. Worked fine on 1.1. How many of you have the same problem?
Thanks for the review of the update. I'm glad you mentioned the baked-in NR. This is a big deal not only on this camera but the A7SIII. The only way to get around it is to record externally in raw.
You're welcome. 100%! Yes, that is definitely a bummer.
Yeah, raw looks much more natural. Dci and customizable nr are my top wishes
Excellent breakdown of the new features! I'm right there with ya - A "cinema camera" NEEDS to have a shutter angle option and a C4k option. Another item on the wishlist for me is the ability to shoot flat 24fps as well as 48fps slow mo.
Good video Josh 👍🏻 I have the FX6 and now the FX3 would be a perfect b-cam 👍🏻😉
Thank you! Yes, great combo!
Great coverage of all of the updates! One minor thing: s709 is effectively Sony's LUT that S-Cinetone was derived from, i.e. it's basically a slightly less contrasty S-Cinetone. 709 would be the standard REC709 LUT. I'm curious to see if/what of these 'cinema' features of the OS make their way to the a7S III or other non-FX cameras.
While drooling after this camera and collecting money, I can't help appreciating your image quality and the moody look of your recent videos. I've searched on your channel but couldn't find a video with maybe a studio camera setup, lighting etc where you would talk about it all. Or is it there somewhere and I missed it? Great work!
Thank you for your comment. I have not made that video yet as I've been changing things up a lot. That being said, my setup is actually pretty simple. Lately it's been a C70 with two Aputure 120D II's. One as a key and one as a back light / rim light. I list all of the gear in my video descriptions. It always comes down to lighting, exposure and color grading.
Great review! I’m happy to hear about the updated firmware. It makes me not regret returning my Sony A7iv to save up for an fx3. Yep.. you read that right. Returned the A7iv. Jack of all trades but a master of overheating.
I sold my A7IV too. I loved that camera but couldn't deal with the overheating.
really helpful breakdown thank you. I do wish the base stayed at 640 but nevertheless, this is a welcomed updated! My wishlist matches yours exactly! Really wanted shutter angle and the exposure tools👎🏾
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
If you are installing with a Mac, Make sure you don't miss this important step installing the camera driver. ua-cam.com/video/zwrj4pRTy_8/v-deo.html. Thanks Josh for the rundown on the firmware update!
Great tutorial Rafael! Thanks for sharing!
Wowww this is REALLY a nice firmware update! Seeing this, I now wish that Sony's A1 and A7IV had the new Main Menu 1 &2, and the Screen Layout, with all the settings above... Considering the A1's price and how it's also a video powerhouse, some of these features should also be added to it!
That's why buying $6000 cameras in 2022 sucks. They get outdated within 2 years. Specially with Canon turning up the competition, Sony will have to release cameras faster now too.
Shutter Angle!!!! That’s all I want
I totally agree with you Armando!
Thanks for the upload. I love this camera but without 4K DCI, SONY should not call it a cinema camera ☹
great video and explanation ! Curious to know if this update will also come to a7s3 and the A1.
Thanks! I obviously have no idea, but I kind of doubt it. The A7S3 just got a firmware update before this FX3 one.
@@Josh_Sattin wait the A7S3 had an update this year??
@@AJCoReTV Yup! It was a minor one about a month ago: www.sony.com/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce-7-series/ilce-7sm3/downloads
Recently was reported an important bug if you use NINJA V as external record , because you'll loose ProRes4k by HDMI . It should definitely output 4K in flex iso log mode as that is the replacement for PP7. It's a Fw2 bug, need to report that to Sony.
I have this issue as well, do you have any more info?
Hi,
--- Since the update HDMI control no longer triggers the recording of external monitors.
Anyone have a solution?
i just updated and it seems my pp7 and 8 is gone. Is that normal? i can just change another PP into slog 3 but still its odd. oh wait, i just changed it like you said to the other modes. How do you change the ISO in post with FCP?
They removed the Log picture profiles in the Log Shooting Mode off setting, but you can still set any PP to any setting, including log profiles. If you are shooting in Cine EI then you only shoot at ISO 800 or 12,800. You can't change the ISO in FCP, you can adjust the exposure with the color grading tools. Best to get the exposure as close as possible in camera by using lights, aperture and ND.
where i could download updating Ver. 2.00, cause on sony site only 2.01
Happy with the upgrade but they should include DCI-4K (cheaper cameras have it) and focus breathing compensation (A7 IV has it) .
how bout custom white balance on dial 1 2 3?
Being a Sony A7SIII user, this update has got me pissed ! 😤
If LUT is set to monitoring (not baked in) will it be baked in via HDMI out > capture card?
Yes, if the monitoring LUT is turned on, it will output that over HDMI.
Loved your video! I have an issue with the update that might be a big problem for some shooters. When you change to Dual Record (Simult Recording) it only displays the number for the biggest card. So if like me you have a bigger 256gb card in slot 2 as a backup and put smaller cards in slot 1 e.g. 64gb/128gb it only displays how much is left in the bigger card! So if you shoot long form stuff like weddings, interviews or conferences you have no idea how much is left on the main card at a glance which may result in you losing irreplaceable footage! Suggestions?
That is interesting for sure. I would probably recommend getting matching cards for professional work. I always run the same exact cards when I am dual recording for important stuff.
@@Josh_Sattin It's mainly because the production company's that sometimes employ me, just hand me random cards of various sizes, so I like to have a second bigger card to cover the whole day or days. I don't really have any control, so I'll just have to be mindful
Will your fx3 still output 4K to an external recorder with Log enabled, mine will not at all
Yes, this is a problem but there is a weird workaround. Set the log shooting mode to off. Set any of the picture profiles to Slog3 and the camera will work just as it did before.
THE VARIABLE SHUTTER IS STILL NOT AVAILABLE ON THE FX3
BUT THE FX30 HAS IT WHICH IS VERY HELPFUL AT THE WEIRD LIGHTING SITUATIONS
PLZ SOMEBODY BRING THIS UP TO SONY
In Flexible ISO mode, is the native ISO 800 or 640? When I scroll the ISO numbers, the lines begin at 500 and below. Thanks!
As far as I know, Sony has not clarified this. On the FX3 it appears to be 640 in Flexible ISO (like on the A7S3) and 800 in Cine EI. I would guess you would get similar performance at both 640 and 800 in Flexible ISO.
So the base ISO is still 640 is Flexible mode? And then changed to 800 in CINE EI?
That’s what it looks like to me. Super weird.
I knew it! I knew they were releasing one.. Hence I made the petition and kept bugging everyone about it
Hi there, just sharing a correction here. For baked-in LUT color into the footage, turn off Log Shooting Mode and go back to Picture Profile and you scroll down to the end when you can see PPLUT- User 1 which it will use the Slog3 with baked-in LUT user 1
Okay, will try that. Seems weird that it would use Slog 3 as a base in the mode where Log is turned off.
@@Josh_Sattin Yeap I guess Log off means Log Mode shooting off but saved user 1 is tied with PP LUT , confusing 😂
That seems to work. Very cool! Thanks for sharing. I just couldn't figure out how to do it. That is definitely a roundabout way. I just pinned that comment at the top.
@@Josh_Sattin 😉 No worries all good! Happy to help, it definitely improves the workflow a lot with the baked-in LUT for livestream or wedding videography if needed
@@LensMeFilm I can see this being a huge help for wedding videographers and other quick turnaround work. The display LUT does get applied over HDMI, so that works for livestream too! Thanks again!
Great video! would you prefer the canon r5c or the sony fx3 to work on documentaries?
Thanks! Wow, that is a really tough question to answer quickly. It really depends on the types of documentaries you do and if you are using any other cameras.
@@Josh_Sattin business documentaries for tv, I have the r5 and I was going to buy the r5c but I didn't like that they raised the price hahaha
@@Oscariver In your situation I would probably say R5C since you already have an R5 and probably some Canon lenses. The FX3 will be a smaller package, you get XLR inputs and better battery life. That would be great for more run and gun documentary work. The R5C is a great doc camera too once you rig it up. I made a video comparing the R5C and A7S3 which might help you a bit: ua-cam.com/video/pBs9YHf7aQU/v-deo.html
I noticed after I updated to 2.0 that the Profile PP8 is no longer available, am I missing something?
I mentioned this in the video. They removed the log profiles in the Log off setting, but if you really want to you can customize any of the PP for any profile. You could even add Slog 3 in there if you wanted to. Or, just switch over to flexible ISO and it'll work the same and you will be in Slog 3.
So cine el shows you what it would look like at that iso? I thought only raw can do that?
It’s not like that. The camera can only record in two ISOs and you can’t change that in post. The Exposure Index allows you to change what’s in your screen and this guides you to change your exposure with aperture, lighting and ND. It’s weird getting used to at first. As I said, I will do a video on this. For now I’d recommend shooting in flexible ISO or Log off. Or just shoot at the base ISOs of 800 and 12,800 with Cine EI set to the one you are using.
One small add on, you may now update future firmware via Slot 1 in Version 2.0
Oh yeah? I didn't see that.
@@Josh_Sattin you will see it when you go the version tab 😀
@@tytang2010 Cool, I assume that will be for future updates. That is awesome!
At last !
One downside that I don’t see anyone mentioning is that you can’t output 4K over hdmi anymore when using the new LOG shooting modes. It defaults to 1080/60, no matter what frame rate you’re shooting in.
Bro this is killing me!!! Have you found any way to fix this.
@@CVFILMSLLC it’s because the log shooting modes include the metadata to keep it at base ISOs. No way to transmit this over HDMI. So you can turn off record media during output, and your hdmi signal will go back to 4K.
@@aenimatt That worked. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. Shooting a wedding today and always rely heavily on the ninja. Thank you very much sir.
@@CVFILMSLLC I’m glad I could help!
@@aenimatt did Sony tell you this was why the issue is happening?
So what is the cleanest ISO which provides most DR? 800 in Cine EI or 640 in flexible ISO? :D
I haven't done that test, but if I would have to guess, I would shoot at 800 in Cine EI mode. I think the base ISO of this camera might have always been 800. Not sure though. It does have the same sensor as the FX6 and that has a base ISO of 800.
So my friend, for you, wich its thw better option, the fx3 or the r5c??? Which of bouth its the real cinema camera??? Im having problems in wich camera to choose... thankyou my friend!!!
For me is different than for everyone else. I sold my R5C and have an FX3. BUT, this is because I also own a C70. Also, I have no idea what a "cinema camera" is anymore. They both have pros and cons depending on your situation. I did compare the R5C with the A7S3. A lot of that can be applied to the FX3: ua-cam.com/video/pBs9YHf7aQU/v-deo.html
@@Josh_Sattin thankyou my friend!!!!
Ever since the update im having an issue where im filming and the screen glitches and shuts off and then turns itself back on without saving what I filmed. Cant decide if its just me or if other people are having the same issue.
I haven’t had that issue. Sounds like it might be power related. Are you using non Sony brand batteries? Or are you using an external power source?
@@Josh_Sattin no all my batteries are official batteries. It's an issue that came with this firmware
Yesss - Focus breathing and DCI. Also BOTH missing from FX3 and flag ship A1. In my opinion the A1 should have it all (at least first). All three cameras released in a similar time frame with similar hardware - so not asking you to update per say a camera 2+ years old #Sony
Will it be possible to import/load all my settings I made in my menu after updating?
That is a great question, but I don't know the answer. I didn't save my settings to a card before the update.
@@Josh_Sattin i did find out that it’s not possible to import your settings. You have to make them all over again. I also found out that in stills mode there is no RAW option, why??
Please make a more detailed video about CineIE .. it’s confusing. What’s the point of having the image becoming brighter or darker on screen if it actually doesn’t translate to the footage?? And what are this numbers on screen mean?
Thanks!
As mentioned in this video, I am planning on it. Thanks for watching!
Can anyone help? I updated my FX3 and and now when trying to shoot log, my Ninja V won't record 4K to the SSD in the Ninja... When I try to change the HDMI output to 4k, Its greyed out when trying to change it. But when I turn log off, the Ninja is able to record 4k again.
There is a weird workaround for this. Turn log shooting off and set any of the picture profiles to Slog3. The camera works exactly like it did before the update. It will output to HDMI like it did before also.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks Josh.
@@CVFILMSLLC You're welcome!
Also if you turn off internal recording the ninja works normally
Bro i dont understand how is “embed lut file” work, when i turn it on is nothing change, after export file i also see s log picture, what i do wrong?
I go over this in this video. It records the LUT that you are using in the metadata. When you play the file back in the camera for example, it will show which LUT you were using if embed was turned on. It does not bake the LUT into the file so you still get Slog 3.
@@Josh_Sattin can i bake it to the file? I also found out that this lut is reproduced in catalyst browse
@@Kuliginvitalik You can bake it in. Check out the pinned comment at the top of this comment section. I also mentioned in this video that the LUT metadata will show up in Catalyst Browse and maybe Premiere Pro.
Good point about the DCI , this is a fundamental of a "Cine "camera , as cinema aspect ratio is .. drum roll .. 17-9 ! ..makes you wonder that for some reason they cant actually do it , because really someone at Sony must have had the same idea .. didn't they ?? .. shutter speed / angle .. not really a game changer .. and often speed is way easier to set , eg , when shooting eg 29,97 is a 50hz environment .. than working out the . X shutter angles ..
I think this camera is definitely capable of doing DCI. The FX3 and FX6 have the same sensor and do a 4.2K oversample to produce UHD. The FX6 crops in a tiny bit to get a 1-1 readout for DCI.
@@Josh_Sattin Yeah you would think so , but its a wonder that no one at Sony thought to be the "cine" 17-9 aspect ratio in to a cine camera , while giving it Cine EI and LUTs .. mind you it took a while for the fx9 to get it too ..
@@Josh_Sattin Yes hopefully it comes along , had a bit of a wait for DCI in the fx9, but it came eventually ..
I actually think having the cinema os is a BAD idea... the best thing to do is to have ONE OS that has two displays. I.E. like One OS, then has a display that looks like cinema and a display for photo, which I think they are doing here.
The only difference is the shutter angle and waveform, I think we are getting those
I'd be interested in knowing the WHY Sony has not included shutter angle on the FX-3 - especially after this update being an FX series body and NOT a hybrid body in concept. In seems to be oddd. It seems like there must be a "reason" (not commenting in attack of Sony - just of curiosity)
PS - recently shot a bunch of 30 FPS footage in a test and my shutter was 1/50th from my usual 24 fps settings and so it ISSSSSS an important feature.Luckily, I was only shooting some test footage. But I would have been really sadden and upset (attention Sony - if it had been a last minute change on an important project - might consider jumping ship if it was a client shot - cause ALLLLLLLL the other Cine cameras have shutter angle so its pretty much industry standard and not something that like "oh, let me check this ADDDITIONALLLL setting"
Fx3 needs shutter angle! This update doesnt change much.
I'm dying that shutter angle is not in this update. I shoot fast and quick at events, it's easy to screw up and forget which framerate I swapped to for that super slow footage versus the usual 24. IMHO there's literally nothing to - a 1960's Casio calculator can do the math. Uuugggghhhhhh.
Yeah, it doesn't seem like that it would be that tough to add shutter angle, but I am not a camera engineer.
I already know they not going to add to a7siii and probably blame it on being cinema line😓
No 180 shutter angle. 🙄
Nope :(
I dont know why anyone would use iso 800 and 12800 only. I want to use the iso i need.
Using Cine EI is not for everyone at this ok. If you shoot in Cine EI you will get the maximum dynamic range and image quality out of that camera. Increasing the ISO above the base ISO, increases noise. Here is a full detailed video about how to use Cine EI: ua-cam.com/video/oAM1RRcGuss/v-deo.html
I don't need an FX3... I don't need an FX3... I don't need an FX3...
You'll have one soon enough my man!
FX3 has terrible software issues. No sound after 2.0/2.0.1/2.0.2 update on two cameras.
it doesn't have the true 24 FPS, so it can't be called cinema xD
