I forgot to mention one thing. If you want to get the best possible image quality while shooting in Flexible ISO (Slog 3) make sure you only set the ISO to 640 or 12,800. If you use other ISO values it will then deviate from the image quality of Cine EI.
still using Flexible ISO 640/12800, allows for safer filming redundancy - internal recording + HDMI output recording ProRes. CINE EI limits HDMI output to 1080 when dual recording as far as I can tell.
So 640 not 800 in flexible iso?? Wich EI do you use and zebra values when you use s709 LUT? I see that LUT on changes zebra and histogram values in camera🫣
@@loadedmultimedia i can't get Flexible Iso to give me 4k HDMI output either, don't you have to switch off log shooting, and then make a picture profile that mimics log? impossibly annoying feature... i can understand why they needed to do it but there was no reason to get rid of PP8 or 9!! that would've fixed the issue, other than not being able to use Cine EI
Because of your last few videos I'm completely spun up on Cine EI. I filmed my last video with it and love the outcome bi used 12800 like you suggested and had a great time in post.

I upgraded to FX3 from A7SIII (and updated to Firmware 2.0), and I also set up everything the same as I had it in the A7SIII, but one thing I did notice while shooting in Flexible ISO mode on FX3, is that at 12,800 I do see more noise in the FX3 than the A7SIII (where I almost couldn't tell the difference between 12, 800 and 640). I've heard it could be because A7S applied slightly more noise reduction at higher base ISO? End of the day I'm pixel peeping and I don't want to shoot at 12,800 if I can avoid it anyways. Excellent comparison Josh, and I can’t see any real difference…. I did notice a very slight shadow detail difference in some of the indoor comparisons, but I figured a slight exposure difference was the cause.
Thanks Jay! Yeah, I didn't include this in the video but by changing the color grade and exposure I can get them to basically look identical.
I have this feature in my s1h and s1 and I just leave it on auto. It complicates to shoot in two iso points when run and gunning during weddings. I try my best to stay at 640 and 4000 but sometimes the situation requires more “light” so being stuck at two levels would limit things especially if my aperture was already wide open.

Hi man. Great comparison. I shoot documentaries. I've been used to shooting in slog 3 with exposure comp set to +1,7. I normally only shoot in ISO 640 or 12800 and try to ND the exposure to match those iso values. Is it the best way to get as much dynamic range as possible? Does the camera have more dynamic range at iso 12800 than ex. 3200 because 12800 is base?
Do you find that +1.7 do be accurate when exposing for S-Log3? I did some tests and had an easier time color correcting when the metering read lower. Maybe it's because my ISO was too high during the test for those examples though?
@@VideoJTS I find the exposure to be find. I just add a lut and do minor adjustments. I often lower the opacity of the lut layer because it can be a tiny bit too contrasty imo
Cine ei gives a slighter flatter, less contrasted look, and is less orange in the skin tones. I'm sure a look at the verctorscopes could confirm this if pixel peeping isn't helping to distinguish the two. Tha k you for this comparison!

Do you need to use ND filter when you are shooting in Flexible ISO?
I like idea of shooting in Cine EI but can’t figure out how to grade it afterwards if it’s a dynamic scene and the exposure is changing. I usually use auto ISO while filming to manage exposure. Any tips? What am I missing?

@@Josh_Sattin I just rewatched it. Got my question answered - Cine EI is not a great solution for solo content creators in run and gun situations with quickly changing conditions. I'm currently using Flexible ISO and it's working fine, was just curious if I could eke out a little more dynamic range out of my FX3 (which no one would ever notice 🤣🤣)
If you use flexible iso mode, is the native iso still 640 (as it was before the v2 update) or is it now 800 along with the cine EI mode?

I think colours are slightly different. In CINE EI it seems to lean a little bit towards green/yellow skintones
If you are referring to the outside tests, the sun and clouds were changing as I was filming. I think that accounts for the differences. I mentioned that in the video. Thanks for watching!

Cine EI looks more like those “old Sony colors” with more sickly looking skin.
While Flexible ISO seems to have more magenta

Responding to this since I am using the evidence here to back some claims... There is a difference between the two profiles. Cine EI is much closer to fx6 with lower contrast and changes to color. Quick and original firmware had higher contrast and more saturated colors and this is clearly visible in the video here. Slightly different, but it is there. The face shots and contrast of the beard as well as skin tone gives it away clearly.
why in some places it is 800 and not 640, I am confused by all the conflicting information 😅 (slog3)

@@Josh_Sattin I mean on the camera it seems clear it is 800 for the fx3 and sony websites but some oyher articles from Somy too say otherwise lol. Maybe there was an update at some point. I would think that it depends on the format you are recording such as slog3. But they themself create confusion. I was just settingmy camera for a shoot tomorrow, so was refreshing my mind to it lol
It actually depends on the camera. Before V2.00 on the FX3 the base ISO was 640. After v2.00 it was 800 in Cine EI. I covered that in this video when the update came out: ua-cam.com/video/VjkEqgT00Ik/v-deo.html
NOW my question is do I still need to be over by 1,7 on the meter with the ciné EI ? Or the goal is now to keep +00 ?
And with flexible ISO do I still need to be over as usual ?
