Look, Jay Graydon is a legend, I hang on every word. This guy has played on more studio dates than anyone. He is the master of a lost art.

Jay is a goddamn genius. And I totally understand what he says about trying to play when the sound isn’t right is spot on.

This is the cat who laid down the guitar solo for "Peg" in one take. One of the sweetest solos ever.

I am sure Jay played great once through, but rumor has it that Fagan edited it which I think is an insult to Jay because his solos are fantastic. This Dan clip touches on the guitar solo, but only the first half of the solo. ua-cam.com/video/waIBA6_0GQc/v-deo.html

no steely Dan tunes were done in 1 take!!!! 8) - ask Jay...

John Hannam I’m sad to say I wasn’t there to see. But the myth was that Jay laid down the track for the guitar solo fairly quickly. As I understand it each song took months to finish.

@@DWinegarden2 There's a video with him talking about the Peg solo. He was there all day doing take after take of different things until he played what we know. Now if he did that particular solo in one take or not I can't say.

"Makes me wanna play" exactly!! If you play an amp that does that to you in any room or gig, you know you've got the right amp.

I think this is a very good explanation of why good tone is so important. If I can't get my sound right on any given gig then my playing is severely compromised. It's painful and I can't ignore it and just play the notes, because they don't sound right. When I do have a tone I like then I am free to play and in fact am inspired to do so. Then the playing comes from joy.

When your tone sucks, it sucks the inspiration and joy from playing. It took me a lomg time to forgive that out.

I have this amp, sometimes I’ll rotate in something else and that something else might do some one thing really well but nothing that I’ve ever owned has been able to deliver the smooth, rich, full crunch tones as well without any help from ODs, now the Rake will also respond well to pushing the front end too and so it’s just hard to beat.

Aw, goddamnit. If I close my eyes, Jay sounds just like he did on his instructional vids I used to watch almost 30 years ago. But damnit, all these cats who were like 40 in 1990, are almost 70 now. Hard to watch your heroes turn into old men. Acch. I guess we all got it coming, right?

He's definitely right about being uncomfortable with an amp tone you have to fight, I'd rather not play TBH. But the technology is there now to replicate any amp, a blind test would verify this, easy.

      1. He's trying to sell you a tube amp.
      2. I defy anyone to profile this amp on a Kemper and tell the difference in a blind test.
      3. Once you own a Kemper, you essentially own every amp and speaker cab ever made PLUS every amp and speaker cab that ever WILL be made in the future.

@@theartfuldodger935 yeah. Without the dynamics of analog. You are fundamentally losing what made the amp that’s being modeled great. You lose everything as soon as it goes digital. No soul.

@@smelltheglove2038 Sorry, but you're talking out of your ass. The Kemper is not the Pod. It is not using the same technology. It is unique in its ability to render the exact character of any amp and speaker cab let alone any pedal you can name. Kemper is being used now by countless artists to record with and to play live.
