Greg the real official version of castles made of sand has now been uploaded onto youtube by the official jimi hendrix channel, for those who havent already had it downloaded or on wax for years. your version is as close as it gets though you just need mitch mitchell and any ol bass player.
@Greg I always thought the backwards solo was done by using volume control manipulation! Pluck the string and wind up the volume reversing the attack/decay.. That's how I used to try to do it anyway :D
This not only demonstrates your mastery of the instrument Greg, but the sheer genius of Hendrix. To create that piece out of thin air, the phrasing, the rythmic intricacies, the double stops, the chord voicings...to me, this Hendrix masterwork represents the pennical of what can be achieved with six steel strings, a chunk of wood, some wire and magnets. No amount of speed shredding, sweep picking arpeggios, hammer ons, alternate picking or whatever else could ever match this for sheer artistry.
Had exactly the same thought just now watching some Hendrix covers. Finding myself amazed that people can play so good, then realise Hendrix ACTUALLY came up with this shit in the first place. Unreal
This is esentially a perfect cover. Phrasing, attack, sound, some minor personal touch thing added, general feeling... Everything! And the tune, oh, the stuff of dreams... it is one of those that define Hendrix's genius. You really DO DIG Jimi :D
Down the street you can hear her scream "you're a disgrace" As she slams the door in his drunken face, And now he stands outside and all the neighbours start to gossip and drool. He cries "Oh girl, you must be mad, What happened to the sweet love you and me had?" Against the door he leans and starts a scene, And his tears fall and burn the garden green. And so castles made of sand, fall in the sea, eventually. A little Indian brave who before he was ten, played war games in the woods with his Indian friends, and he built a dream that when he grew up, he would be a fearless warrior Indian Chief. Many moons passed and more the dream grew strong, until tomorrow He would sing his first war song, And fight his first battle, but something went wrong, Suprise attack killed him in his sleep that night And so castles made of sand, melts into the sea eventually. There was a young girl, whose heart was a frown, Because she was crippled for life, and couldn't speak a sound And she wished and prayed she would stop living, so she decided to die. She drew her wheel chair to the edge of the shore, and to her legs she smiled "You won't hurt me no more." But then a sight she'd never seen made her JUMP AND SAY "Look, a golden winged ship is passing my way" And it really didn't have to stop...it just kept on going. And so castles made of sand slips into the sea, Eventually
I have watched a number of your videos and there are so many signature Hendrixism's that you capture. These songs are virtually note for note, but none of them sound like a Berklee student that read the sheet music playing them. You put yourself into them. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to transcribe some of the things that are only audible on isolated tracks and things I always wanted to take the time to sit down and figure out but just never did - Rhythm guitar on little wing solo, Wind Cries, Electric lady, etc... All of this puts you in a class of your own as a guitarist. From one James Marshall fan to another - Thank You...
Greg has long slender fingers, like Jimi’s. Greg is so technically competent, he can play in that very relaxed manner in which Jimi played. Because Greg can play so at ease, he is able to put his feelings into his playing at will.
Hard to believe they made Brian May the world number 1 guitarist over jimi Hendrix especially when you see and hear his playing this is great example of that
@@ryancooley3247 The influence of Jimi Hendrix with his virtuosity and style is unparalleled. It doesn't matter with what motivation or agenda it was decided that Brian May is the best guitarist. He is number 6 for me. I am 68 and I saw Hendrix in Germany in 1967. And dozens other guitarists in the years after.
Definitely one of my favourite Hendrix tunes. This, and Little Wing live at the Royal Albert Hall, Hey Joe live in Stockholm '69. And pretty much all of Band Of Gypsys. I think this tune though is one of the main reasons I fell in love with Strat neck pickups. As a full-blooded man, I'm not afraid to admit to whoever reads this that neck pickups make me moist. Carry on!!
Honestly , Greg has shown me just how great Jimi was. I always knew he was the best but being able to watch someone who can actually replicate the exact Hendrix sound really shows how insanely good Jimi was. Thanks Greg.
Came here looking for a cover with no vocals so I could hear the guitar better. Whoa man. I was not ready for this. Almost brought a tear to my eye hearing you play it so beautifully and true to its original sound. Thank you.
The beauty of this song is over the top. Hendrix would have little problem recreating this live especially after Are you experienced went beyond the studio effect versions into the stratosphere when played live. Hendrix was far more than just guitar and people still have a hard time understanding pure musicianship. Also the fact these people only come around every century or so. The power of his music and feel for music is still too much for many to comprehend. Great job.
Brought back memories of Jimi's greatness. You did a wonderful job on showing his technique and the joy of listening to it. From an old guy to you, loved your playing and Thanks For The Memories!
I've never heard anyone replicate Hendrix covers to the standard you do. absolutely magical. I always play this intro and the little wing intro in my playing, and can never nail it. I tweak it a little to own ease. Incredible Greg, really something
Funny thing Greg is Greg, he really needs no introduction or any name for that matter. For those of us who know him, love his magic, and for those that love his magic, wanna be him! I listen to his stuff almost as much as the master himself. Thanks again Maestro 🤟
With only a few other songs, this one stands in the guitar masterpieces, this really shows Hendrix's skill on writing music. Just blow my mind. And your interpretation was awesome dude, well done.
There’s no question that you were listening to the studio recording of this song through headphones and playing over it with just your guitar being recorded to this video. I can tell for sure by the way that you speed up and slow down with the recording.
Never truly appreciate how great Hendrix was until you plug in the lyrics and realize Jimi's boundless creativity and being so true to life and no two songs of his sound alike. To have near close guitar riffs to enjoy, i am not a great guitarist, but thanks many times over for allowing us an all too brief pleasure, a privilege, it is to have something left after his niece, Jannie, took it all away from us. Great work, rock on
This is the first comment I've ever written on any UA-cam video, You GREG are the sole reason I picked back up the guitar and in doing so it brought back my musical fire and love for all things musical. Thank you so much Ash
As a RUSH ( Alex Lifeson ) inspired guitarist, the Hendrix style of playing is quite different from the way I normally play. I like to challenge myself with new techniques every now and then. This is one of those times! Love this tune!
I realized that Hendrix had a habit of baring the low E with his thumb. Something that through a few decades of playing, I never do. But now I see how this opens up so many new possibilities of creating cords and arpeggios and etc. I'm inspired to learn some more of his tunes. I gotta work on baring with the thumb for a bit. I keep pulling the low E over the edge of the fret board! Thanks for figuring this out and sharing! Very well done!
Greg, you are always great man. I'd really like to see you break out of note for note covers and start seeing your own style bleed into these songs. Absolutely brilliant playing man.
You play it well. You know Jimi was a great guitarist, but an even greater poet, and noone ever mentions that, or maybe even noticed that, but I got to mention it. Not only that, but his feel for adding music to his poetry was incredible. I can't think of any other artist that could do that. RIP Jimi.

Listen to "how would you feel" by curtis knight and the squires if you havent already; its a young hendrix pre-experience. Anyways, dont stop posting and dont stop playing
I've played guitar for many years, but never had a good, proper Strat until recently, and never understood them. Just seemed like nostalgia to me. But no, a GOOD one, with the right pickups, is almost like its own sub-class of instrument to me now. They are incredibly dynamic, and the range of tones you can get based on pick attack, picking location, and just the variation in timbre as you move up and down the fretboard is amazing. They're incredibly versatile and expressive. Definitely not the easiest guitars to play, but the juice is worth the squeeze!
Hi Greg. This is amazing. Can you share the exact settings on Amplitube? How did you set the gain, what are the values on the Marshall JTM 45/100 and on any other sections you changed from default?
its so good i gotta slow it down and learn every note. Its fucking difficult to play that f chord and mute the g string at the same time... my hands arent made for it but im going to make it work
This cover is great! However, I find the tuning quite odd tbh It's like half a step down but purposely tuned a little bit higher, is it actually like that or is it only your guitar's magic?

It's like half a step down but purposely tuned a little bit higher, is it actually like that or is it only your guitar's magic?
lovely job. makes you appreciate Jimi even more seeing his guitar played so well considering it was natural and his creative way.
wow man. Did you play with the record on the headphones?
***** Yeah with the original isolated guitar track :)
where did you find the isolated track?
He must have, each day - for 30 FN years. This is EXACTLY how Jimi played it!
