I just binged watched all your videos from the beginning. We live aboard a 41 ft fraser full time on southern VI and visited desolation sound this summer for the first time. Next summer we take early retirement and are heading north as well so your videos are inspiring to say the least. You do such a good job putting them together. Well done!

How do you keep your beer cold and do you plan on solar and davits etc for your next year project?
Thank You!! So glad that resonates. Being in the present moment this day and age is a lost skill, and being out here is helping us to relearn all of that!
We usually get 5 days of residual cold out of the ice in the box. Warm beer is the saddest part of our journey so we are working towards changing that... solar will be part of the solution, soon! Unsure about an arch and all that yet, might just keep it simple.. surprise. We measured our energy needs this szn so that was helpful in helping us gauge how much energy we require. We're hoping to work with a sponsor for this project so it's been a bit of a delay..
Great channel. No commercials for one. And no windlass, no lazy jacks and no snubber. On a 30ft boat, two people on board, you do not need those things. As long as the anchor rope has stretch in it and it sinks. Furthermore I would get rid of the furling headsail. I thought I heard it is a 160. Far too big if combined with a full main. In case the 160 is in good shape, have it remade to a hank-on 130% as a genua 1. Then order or buy a genoa 2 around 90% and a stormjib at same size as the main in third reef. Figures are estimates as I cannot judge the position of your mast. Last: Based I my experience. A tiller is the ultimate means to find out wether your sails are trimmed perfectly to enable the boat to stay on course. Not sure how easy it would be in your case to ditch the wheel and go for a tiller. Btw: tiller autopilots are a lot cheaper than wheelpilots. 400 US for an tillerpilot Autohelm ST1000? I guess. Get rid off the quadrant and steering cables, cables break anytime, sooner or later. And, getting a hank-on sail down from the cockpit.....I have a cheap solution. In case you guys are interested, lemme know. I wish you fair winds and following seas.
Thanks Gert! I think we'll keep our furling headsail... but we have thought a lot about ditching the wheel & adding a tiller ever since our steering failed the first szn. We've compared autopilots and they are definitely cheaper and agreed, steering with a tiller is superior. Likely the way we will go in the near future. Amazing and magical video, the rainbow reminded me of the "Steve" sky phenomenon, we had an anchor roller mounted on the bowspit of our
Catalina and that should make pulling up the anchor and dropping it easier I believe, big cheers, P&F

Agreed an anchor roller would be the way to go, we’ve been planning to make one for a while but it keeps getting moved down the list! Hopefully we’ll get around it soon!
Very nice video, takes, beautiful nature. When you mention "North of the 50th" I cannot suppress a grin, living at Amsterdam latitude near the North Sea, roughly at 52.4N, in the London, Amsterdam, Berlin latitude ballpark.
For comparison:
Vancouver, BC, CDN is at 49.3N.
In Europe:
Copenhagen & Edinburgh (~56N), Northernmost mainland Scotland (Thurso) & Stockholm (~59N), Bergen & Oslo & Helsinki & St.. Petersburg (~60N), Reykjavik (~64N), Arctic Circle (66.5N), Mehamn, Norway(~71N), Longyearbyen, (mid) Svalbard (~78N).
At ~46.8N, Quebec City is farther South than Paris France (~48.9N).
If we compare these to the Southern Hemisphere, note that Antarctica stretches outside the Antarctic circle (~66.6S).
Nearest city in Australia to that circle would be Melbourne (~37.8S) when ~37.3N could see me set foot on the African continent.
Hobart, Tasmania (~43S). Bluff, NZ (~46.6S).
In South America, Ushuaia (~54.8S).
Both Teniente R. Marsh Airport - Antarctica (~62.2S) and Base Marambio - Antarctica (~64.2S) are outside the Antarctic circle, still.
1 degree latitude is about 111 kilometers or 69 miles or almost 60 nautical miles.
At the equator, each minute longitude (1/60th degree) is about 1 nautical mile.
We appreciated this geek out on latitudes! Its super interesting that such a large portion of the worlds population lives in northern climates and that the southern ocean is so large! Modern maps really play with the perspective of where everything is in the world!

Did you guys do a video of installing your diesel heater? I just installed mine but I don't think I like where it is located.
We didn’t actually do an install video for it, we’re planning on installing a drip diesel heater this fall as we found the forced air heater doesn’t quite cut the mustard for us.
We installed the forced air heater in the starboard lazerette and ducted it into the galley.
@@AllisonandJamesSailing that's where I put mine as well. But I'm thinking of relocating it behind the drawers in the galley and routing the exhaust through the bulkhead into the aft compartment and out a through hull. I think with more vents running to the bow and under the floor the little diesel furnace should be enough for us.
You need Lazy Jacks.
Lazy Jacks are handy, especially if you're solo sailing. It's on the long list of things that would be 'nice to have'. There's no bells & whistles on our boat currently.. that's sort of it's charm, you have to work real hard for everything haha Thankfully flaking the mainsail is a chore that's easy enough with two people

Oil is a hydrocarbon NOT fossil.
The generic term for crude oil and petroleum is fossil fuel but yes they are mixtures of hydrocarbons
@AllisonandJamesSailing I think what they meant is that, contrary to what we were all taught at school, the science is now pretty conclusive that oil & gas are created by a geological process, not squashed dinosaurs. The debate has been ongoing for a decade or two but the convulsive evidence was the discovery of hydrocarbons on one of Saturn's moons. Either way, sailing will always be preferable to running a diesel engine. Nice video guys!
