Already subscribed to D+ but I want these on 4K Blu-ray for sure. If they look that good with a 35mbps Bitrate on D+ imagine how they’ll look with an 80-100 mbps Bitrate on 4K Blu-ray.
Disney skimps on the disc size; it won’t be anywhere near that high. Probably won’t put DV on the disc either... I think them being cheap on the disc prevents adding the Dolby Vision layer.
Ive always preferred 1080P Blu-Ray over 4K HDR streaming, but not as good a 4k HDR Blu Ray, so will be interested to see what Star Wars will look like. on all 3 formats.
4K Blu Ray did absolutely nothing for The Last Jedi, but then the infinite number of problems with that movie had nothing to do with picture or sound quality.

@@kascnef I love the special edition of ESB, every change in that from the wampa, Snowspeeder's transparency, Emperor Palpatine, Boba's voice and windows and balconies in Cloud City I think was of great benefit to the film and franchise so I'm very glad to hear that little has been changed on Disney+ of this version since I haven't been able to check it out. I just wish George hadn't gone crazy and unnecessarily overboard with changes in ANH and ROTJ as the only good changes in ANH only come when they enter the Death Star but everything in that sequence and after are actually good changes, everything beforehand on Tatooine was trash and then the only good changes in ROTJ come with like less than 10 minutes left in the film. Ideally in the future Disney releases something that enables to blend your favorite sequences from the theatrical versions with the special editions somehow lol, but before that we've got to at least get the theatrical versions
Once I watched them, to be honest I was asking myself how much better will the 4K disks be 🧐. Might get just to add to the collection it was a great surprise that Disney hot is with these new up to date movies in the DV format.. which this absolutely confirms the physical ones will be coming soon.
Slacker77 Apple TV 4K has them in 4K Dolby Vision. Unfortunately, not all of the apps are consistent across devices. However, Apple TV has worked out well for me as Netflix, VUDU, Disney+, and Apple TV+ all work with Dolby Vision.
Great! Please review ep1-3, 7, rogue one next! Star wars is original; 97se, 2004dvd; 2011blu for versions. Looking fwd to the 4k uhd release in 2020. Disney needs to fix the app so we can watch 4k sdr, and atmos without dolby vision.
I felt the image for new Hope was more desaturated, looking grayer and with less color pop, but I agree about sound. Maybe it’s my tv, don’t think so. Revenge of the Sith looked amazing!
It's crazy how Jedi (the REAL one!) was always soft or slightly out of focus, yet it was filmed in 70mm. I guess the technical aspects of shooting kind of ruined the 70mm advantage. I have a feeling that i'll wait to SEE it for myself and I prefer for them to maximize detail, even if that means a little more grain. Don't scrub grain at the cost of max detail. We know these were not shot on digital...
they arnt 4k, they are 1080p masters, plus you are streaming, you dont see the same resolution as the masters, also these arnt the special editions, these are the 2011 edits of the film, plus an additional scene from lucas, these arnt restorations at all.
4K streaming is not 4K. A blu Ray at 1080 is better than any streaming service at 1080P period. No video compression shit. Again, 4K STREAMING IS NOT 4K
7 movies x $35 = $245. Plus Iron Man 1-3, and Thor(s) = $175... So, yeah, subscribed! Not sure Disney knew what they were giving away... even if you sub “month to month”, it’s cheaper than renting a single digital stream. Apple makes it super easy to cancel this stuff in your settings as well.
i think tying these to a subscription is expected but cruel. im sure a 4k bluray boxset is on the cards but for what they will probably charge for yet another altered version i shall try my best to pass on it. im assuming its quiet like every other disney release too.
Did they fix the 'color' in A New Hope? It was way way waaaay over saturated in the SE's along with the Black Crush. Also, did they fix the 'color' in Empire? The SE's had a blue tinge added to them like aNH did, also.
colt seavers A lot of 1080p BluRay masters we’re recolored to “Orange and Teal” false color contrast. 4K HDR/DV masters are noticeably “undoing” this damage with true light/dark contrast! So, yes, the colors are much more natural.
Dolby Vision was such a great choice for the original trilogy! Able to pump up the brightness very high and it doesn't degradate nearly as much as even other 4K transfers, great transfer!
Why am I not surprised . It sounds like they just threw it all together with no intention of increasing the quality of the A/V. Other than having easy access to the full catalog what does this service offer. I will ride the disc train until the wheels fall off.
As most of us know the whole Star Wars Box Set will be released in 4K HDR this year 2020. I "prey" the Transfer will be done extremely well and wouldn't it be great if Disney added Dolby Vision too on each Disc!
I'm looking for a tv that's flagship with hdr and dolby vision and not oled what do you recomend and model was going to get the new tcl or the sony 850g but there lacking and q90r doesnt have dolby vision
for Return of the Jedi, I'll stick with the 4K83 version which looks and sounds fantastic and best of all, it's free from the special edition treatment.
Mammoth Supremacy 55 No, he’s referring to Team Negative One’s 4K restoration of the unaltered original trilogy. Project 4K80 (The Empire Strikes Back) is still in the making.
Your point about seeing imperfections on Vader’s helmet illustrates why higher resolutions on older films is not good. Less is more. The film maker has to fool us otherwise special effects and props seem fake and not real. I have the Star trek movies blu rays and the movies look better on dvd for the above same reasons.
Rogue One (2016) went back to the same cheap, fake looking old Vader Helmet from A New Hope (1977). I guess Rouge One did this because it is a direct prequel to A New Hope, but then again Revenge of the Sith (2005) was also a prequel to A New Hope but yet that featured Vader with a more modern and slick looking Helmet which The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) use too. In other words: the whole Vader Hamlet thing has been inconsistent.
I had no access to Atmos, on any of em though on my newest fire TV 4k it passes atmos of course on Jack Ryan and also select Movies Anywhere titles, Aquaman for instance. ZERO atmos on any Disney plus titles that indicate it, anyone else experience this?

It won't be long til Disney/LucasFilm re-releases Star Wars I-VI unaltered, they have been ready for release since 2015 Disney needed Fox in order to legally release them. And now they can! They are all digitally remastered! No special edition edits to be found! They will also be re-released with Star Wars VII-IX "The Skywalker Saga" on A Blu-Ray Box Set and later 4K 🙂

Who cares. Nerds are us. Who cares who shot who first.
I already have Disney+ but for watching all those movies upgraded to a Atmos track and 4k with both hdr10 and dolby vision why not
Once I watched them, to be honest I was asking myself how much better will the 4K disks be 🧐. Might get just to add to the collection it was a great surprise that Disney hot is with these new up to date movies in the DV format.. which this absolutely confirms the physical ones will be coming soon.
How did you watch this Shane? I tried on PS4 Pro with oled and no 4K. I tried on Roku 4k and didnt work. Netflix, amazon, vudu all work in 4k.
Slacker77 Apple TV 4K has them in 4K Dolby Vision. Unfortunately, not all of the apps are consistent across devices. However, Apple TV has worked out well for me as Netflix, VUDU, Disney+, and Apple TV+ all work with Dolby Vision.
I’ll wait for the Physical Disc’s. I like owning what I pay for, and prefer superior quality.
The 2011 discs are the best
Jordan Haynes Revenge of the Sith looked the best out of all of the SW films on D+.
SOrry, I thought this was the 4K disc reviews...
The 4k UHD physical releases have been out unless these are retouched. I got Empire & Rogue One this year
Which movie has the best drums ???
I have Disney Plus now so I'm definitely gonna jam on Star Wars in 4k
they arnt 4k, they are 1080p masters, plus you are streaming, you dont see the same resolution as the masters, also these arnt the special editions, these are the 2011 edits of the film, plus an additional scene from lucas, these arnt restorations at all.
Are these derived from new 4K WCG masters?
4K streaming is not 4K. A blu Ray at 1080 is better than any streaming service at 1080P period. No video compression shit. Again, 4K STREAMING IS NOT 4K
7 movies x $35 = $245. Plus Iron Man 1-3, and Thor(s) = $175... So, yeah, subscribed! Not sure Disney knew what they were giving away... even if you sub “month to month”, it’s cheaper than renting a single digital stream. Apple makes it super easy to cancel this stuff in your settings as well.
Are we going to get the originals films with out the altercations?
Star Wars is full of altercations - you mean alterations, & no, they are the extended versions - just watch the video, they say this clearly.
Are the prequels also available in Atmos?
Yes
i think tying these to a subscription is expected but cruel. im sure a 4k bluray boxset is on the cards but for what they will probably charge for yet another altered version i shall try my best to pass on it. im assuming its quiet like every other disney release too.
No it’s not quiet. It sounds quite good for older films.
@@therealshanelee thanks for the reply. you should be a sales rep for disney. hopefully its reasonably priced when it get the uhd bluray release
Not trying to sell it just telling you what I see and hear on my system. If it sucked I’d definitely mention it. Last Jedi.

TLJ is a masterpiece...
I never really noticed all the dirt and damage to what the characters were wearing in “A New Hope” until I saw 4K version.
Did they fix the 'color' in A New Hope?
It was way way waaaay over saturated in the SE's along with the Black Crush.
Also, did they fix the 'color' in Empire? The SE's had a blue tinge added to them like aNH did, also.
Yes they have. They are closer to the way they looked before.
colt seavers A lot of 1080p BluRay masters we’re recolored to “Orange and Teal” false color contrast.
Great review Shane!
I was hoping that they would have the original theatrical versions of the original trilogy on Disney plus but oh well better then nothing
What equipment were you watching these on?
List is down in the video description as well as a link to the equipment video.
Can you review some of the Marvel films, to see if they are worse or better then the 4K blu rays?
There is no prayer they will be better than the 4K Blu-rays
I'm looking for a tv that's flagship with hdr and dolby vision and not oled what do you recomend and model was going to get the new tcl or the sony 850g but there lacking and q90r doesnt have dolby vision
Sony 900f, 950G
@@therealshanelee 950 it is 75
Thx
for Return of the Jedi, I'll stick with the 4K83 version which looks and sounds fantastic and best of all, it's free from the special edition treatment.
How big is the download size. Also Empire strikes back
Mammoth Supremacy 55 No, he’s referring to Team Negative One’s 4K restoration of the unaltered original trilogy. Project 4K80 (The Empire Strikes Back) is still in the making.
Have you noticed the change in Color palette compared to the old Blu-rays?
The color palette matches better with how the films where released in theaters now.
I’m still waiting for the Star Wars trilogy in a 3D hologram. Only then will I buy yet another edition of those films.
Shane will you be reviewing the 4K prequel trilogy?
Thinking about it.
@@therealshanelee wasn't the prequel trilogy shot in 1080p? This means the 4K versions won't be true 4K, right?
That would be correct technically.
@@therealshanelee How do they look?
You should report the actual bit rates of the stream using Apple TV and the developer option overlay.
I don’t have a Mac.
there coming out on 4k blu ray now you can preorder the new hope
Maybe I missed it, how did you stream your experience Apple TV 4K?

Yep.

What about the episode IV magenta issue from the Blu-ray? Has that been addressed?
Jim D Yes. It’s gone
I'll wait a week or two till I see rips of these available. :) Disney gets no more of my money!
Notorious1503 if you’re gonna watch the SE you might as well watch them in a version that isn’t filled with terrible color corrections
@@funkymonk255 Dude... You're talking to a OG Star Wars fan. I got 33mm rips of the original trilogy ffs
RooskiWolf that comment wasn’t aimed at you
@@funkymonk255 Apologies. ;)
Did anyone notice ,in Ep 1, how far you can see Qui Gon on the ramp of Queen Amidalas ship after the Darth Maul dessert battle?
Watch them all with a free trial.
Then cancel next Tuesday to save money and buy the 4k bluray
I had no access to Atmos, on any of em though on my newest fire TV 4k it passes atmos of course on Jack Ryan and also select Movies Anywhere titles, Aquaman for instance.
ZERO atmos on any Disney plus titles that indicate it, anyone else experience this?
Nice review, can you also do a review of the prequels and force awakens in 4K?
Thanks for your reviews, I am having trouble getting 5.1.im getting Dolby Digital 2.0 on my sonos 5.1
I'll stick with Harmy's real versions and the 4K77 and 4K83 projects so I can actually watch the "REAL" versions of the movies.
I'm sticking with Adywan's Revisited saga, once it's complete.
@@andysummersthxcinemaandmyc7748 upgrade at least to harmys despecialized, or. If you want 4k look up 4k77.
Too bad they are only 720p. I would love to see his version in 4k. He did an amazing job with those films. I can't wait to see Return of the Jedi in 2027 when he finishes it.
blackhawkjohn1 - Content matters more than presentation, right?
It won't be long til Disney/LucasFilm re-releases Star Wars I-VI unaltered, they have been ready for release since 2015 Disney needed Fox in order to legally release them. And now they can! They are all digitally remastered! No special edition edits to be found! They will also be re-released with Star Wars VII-IX "The Skywalker Saga" on A Blu-Ray Box Set and later 4K 🙂
Shane---Love your channel! Have you considered doing A/V reviews of high profile 4K/Atmos shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime? I was late to the party for "The Haunting of Hill House" on Netflix which is in Dolby Atmos. There is a GREAT Atmos scene in episode 2 that involves two of the sisters being incredibly scared due to an insane amount of pounding in a bedroom that has an incredible front soundstage that completely immerses you.
You have got to check it out!
I have but nothing has blown me away.
What streaming source do you use?
All the equipment is listed in the video description.

The best versions are the despesialized versions by far. No PS1 CGI shit. Disney needs to remove that shit or I will never buy another remastered version from them.
Now can you imagine if HBO MAX gets a Dolby Vision/Atmos version of the Snyder Cut?
No thanks. I've seen enough Zack Synder's rape fantasies to last a lifetime.
@@rooskiwolf1653 no Snyder cut
So at walmart they re re re released the prequels original and sequel trilogies separate on dvd as well as solo and rogue one. To me I think it is a waste of time cause as the rise of Skywalker eventually released on dvd they are going to re re re re release the trilogy again but in a combo pack of all 9 movies. I have a feeling the title of that bundle is going to be Star Wars the Skywalker saga for a measly 69.99 price maybe or 79.99 if blu ray. Dont y'all agree.
Is this the theatrical cut? If not, does anyone have an idea when they'll come out with a quality version of it?
It's not, they will never release the theater cut..I bet when geroge Lucas sign it too Disney in the contract was to never release them, the only way to get them is to find the Despecialized Edition which is hard to find
@@doshi066 that's not what I'm hearing from Disney insiders. It's not if, but when. Many speculate that it will come out some time after the Skywalker series is released
