Sadly true. The Resistance Bomber, TIE Strikers and Brute are at least new, but they're not a lot. Love or hate George, he loved machines and really could tell the audience a lot with how to convey visual language with that.

Technically not a starfighter, more of a patrol craft (it had cells for prisoners and was overall more of an extremely armed and armored police car)
Its not a Starfighter, it is more like a specialized transport Ship, like the Millenium Falcon.

Yeah, lazy but... it's like automotive industry. Constructors try ti imitate more or less each other, the models evolve slowly, and there's always something of the old models in the new ones.
They could have made new ones but they wanted to show that the resistance didn’t have many resources, they couldn’t afford to make completely new ships.

TIE Daggers were flown by Sith pilots who used the force to sense other ships around them. I would imagine training to fly without sight but rather feeling with the force would make you a more dangerous pilot. It obviously didnt help them at all in RoS cause they got smacked but it was just a thought haha.

a really interesting fact that a lot of people don't notice is that there is no english alphabet in Star Wars. The language they speak is just called Basic, and their alphabet is called Arubesh. As such, the characters in-universe would have no idea what an A, B, D, X, or Y is, meaning that the names for those starfighters are complete nonsense to them

@@ghostlyboi1003 Well, the thing about the U-Wing is that it was not a true starfighter, and was made for a gunship/transport role. It might be able to go toe to toe with a TIE Bomber, but that's about it.

Yea I was really disappointed by the design of the new trilogy's starfighters and the designers' descriptions honestly aren't reflected in what we see in this video.

Except for like, you know, all of the different shapes of the X-wings and A-wings, the completely new designs of the resistance bomber and TIE silencer, and the added weapons and systems of the other TIE fighters. Yeah just new paint.
Henry van der Linden Resistance Bomber is a Bulkier B-Wing, and the TIE Silencer is just a more Geometric TIE Interceptor, *CHANGE MY MIND.*
Henry van der Linden also the X-Wing and A-Wings were just a way to get sales through nostalgia.

@Brian Liebe I think they didn't include the shuttle for the same reason as Emporer Palpatine's shuttle, because it was a 'shuttle' not a 'starfighter' but then again they missed so many starfighters as well.

To be fair, there are so many ships and space station in Star Wars (including legends), so i don't really blame them for forgetting it.
Got to be honest, this has changed something I feel about the prequels.
I agree. My main issues with the prequels is the story, and how it's so messy and unclear on defining whose story we're following (In my opinion, 1-3 should be Obi-Wan's story, not Anakins)

I find the design of the prequels to be fantastic! I love the look of everything.

I’m disappointed in everyone...nobody cares about the TIE Reaper it’s basically a transport like the U-Wing and yet everyone forgets it even exists. It really deserves more attention. Death Troopers wouldn’t have been able to fight on Scarif without it.
@@dubswirl3082 I see your point but I thought that the Tie Reaper was specifically a transport whereas a U-Wing was a mix between a transport and a fighter. Again I'm not 100% sure, but that's how I see it

I did really like the Naboo Starfighter.
Mr. Chiang created a wonderful design. Still a favourite of mine among the many others, even after 20 years.
At least it's creative.
I really like the aero spike engines on it and I think it is the only ship with aero spikes
I feel like Doug's job got much easier with the Disney Star Wars trilogy. The classic ship designs have received only minor updates, and very few new interesting ships have been shown on screen at all.
I grew up loving Doug Chiang's prequel concept art. I had the art of books and was always blown away by his style. I just hope we get to see him utilise some of that creativity again.
Hearing Amy geek-out over lore is just so wholesome.
Prequel Trilogy: Lets do all new ship designs that are evocative of the OT but not close enough to feel cheap, showing a history of progression throughout the end of the Republic and into the Empire.
Sequel Trilogy: Lets make the X-wings black and give the TIE fighters a little red I don't know.
Nothing made the prequels look better, than the sequels.
One of the most annoying things about the sequels is the lack of new fighter designs. Even if we did get a new ship design it was a variation of a box or a box with ridiculously large wings. It was just laziness passed off as nostalgia.
Still waiting on the return of the ARC-170 because someone realized the X-Wing needs ANOTHER WING
To be honest, I want the X-Wing to look like an X-Wing, and I want the TIE Whatever to look like a TIE Whatever. If they made new designs and changed them to much, then I would not have like the films at all. With all the other changes, the ships is one of the things that still made it Star Wars for me.
Sure, they had other designs before, in the prequels. But that was before, in a time of relative peace and prosperity. We had earlier versions or design language that would ultimately become the ships we know and love. But then came the huge intergalactic war, ships kept developing for a while, but then they reached a point where refining the working designs were more reasonable than designing, testing and manufacturing completely new designs. Sure, they had some new models surfacing here and there, but not in the large production scale.
Kjetil Balstad Disney has played you right into their hand.
It was so cool seeing the evolution between the prequel ships and the OT ships. They reflect the time periods well. I just feel the transition between OT and the sequel ships is pretty bland. They kinda just make everything bigger, I wish they did just new ships for that era entirely.
Space travel has existed in the star wars universe for over 30,000 years, it's not a new thing and the creativity is pretty dry when it comes to new designs

Doug Chang is such the coolest concept designer for the PT trilogy, and to this day, he’s still got the epic touch in his concepts. X-wings are still my favorite ships to this day, glad the resistance got the similar design, but modified to outrun first order TIE’s.

Yeah tbh, I feel like they give Lucas way to much credit for the designs and ideas in Star Wars in general. The artists, designers and builders that worked on the original trilogy helped make those movies what they are.

The design screams P-61 to me. It has 2 separate cockpits for the pilots (in the P-61 the rear cockpit held a radar operator instead), it has a long nose, two massive engines, and a gunner in a 3rd cockpit at the back. A true heavy fighter design, not like that of a dive-bomber.

This brings back memories of playing TIE Fighter, XW vs TIE, and XW Alliance. Especially the one dogfight training mission triggered by containers where you're in a TIE fighter and you have to take out increasingly larger waves of A-wings, and you learn very quickly how the TIE fighter is literally the most flimsy thing in existence!
The TIE Advanced has always been my favorite ship; it was 'Advanced' because it was the first TIE to have both deflector shields and a hyperdrive.
That said, the thing I never understood about the ARC-170 is that it appears to have S-Foils for no reason at all other than to kinda look like the X-Wing - they're just part of the ship for no practical reason and it always stuck out in my eyes, and not in a good way.
Something of note that they don't mention - the shape of the Millennium Falcon was inspired by a burger and a pickle on a plate.
Also, why no Sith Infiltrator?
Well the arc-170 fulfilled more of a gunship role between a fighter and a bomber, and the s-foils are meant to convey a sense of drag that makes it feel more powerful and slow like it has a lot of firepower but can still dogfight. A lot of Star Wars is less about what make physical sense and what makes stylistic sense.
@@josephbracero5833 I can understand that, but comparatively speaking with regard to other S-Foil ships they don't fulfill any sort of purpose.
The X-Wing and B-Wing S-Foils at least spread the gun arrays out for a wider field of fire and to allow for alternating or simultaneous fire of the blasters.
The Arc-170 just has random awkward bits that poke out for a more unique silhouette, lol.
In a series where ship design has a lot of practical nuances to make things feel more substantial and 'lived in', it just feels like lazy design to me.

S-foils are for heat dissipation, nothing else
These wingtip cannons are absolutely huge (even compared to X-wings'), so they generate massive heat. That's what the radiator vents on the S-Foils are for.
And they talked about this craft as if it was the precursor to the X-Wing but it was established 15 years ago that the Z-95 Headhunter was the precursor to the X-Wing.

I don't remember any of the new ships. None of them were memorable or cool or even very believable. In the original series, almost Every ship is like a revelation. SO cool and so believable to the point of invoking a desire to fly in them for oneself and being super memorable and imitated for many, many years to come.
They spent so much time doing such a great job designing these spaceships

But it's not stolen like many believe it is. First of all, triangles are such a simple shape that you can't steal it. Also the triangles are different ones on the TIE Dagger and ECs model.
But most importantly(!!!) the TIE Dagger was a thing before ECs model was released. There is concept art of a TIE Fighter for TFA that looks exactly like the TIE Dagger, same triangle shape, same other layout, just the normal TIE Fighter window instead of the new one, EC Henry released his model in 2016

Agreed. Hoping to see it get some actual screen time finally, now that blue screen limitations are bygone. Still working on absorbing this update though; been admiring the original for so long that anything they did was bound to look weird at first.

@@nekro6897 I didn't hate the design of the bombers, kinda dug the ww2 callback but yeah, big letdown in execution and exactly where the B's should've been. I got the sense, given that they were being cannibalized for parts, maybe the fighter was unreliable (which is true in canon) so they gave up and went back to reliable X's and A's. Now I guess they were just...elsewhere in tfa and tlj?? *shrug* Whatever, won't complain til I see it. :)

I have my issues with some of the Star Wars movies but I LOVE their ship designs. I love the mechanicalness of the x-wings, the sleek 30’s-50’s style Naboo Starfighter and what she mentions at around 7:00 about the Jedi fighter needing the hyperspace ring because it doesn’t have its own FTL drive which was such a cool concept.
The Delta Jedi Starfighter is probably my favorite fighter ship. Though it lacks deep space travel abilities. I love the simple design.

Comfy well made souped up ship. Something slightly mystical about it like a lot of stuff in star wars.
If you watch solo it shows that there’s that one robot that downloads her flight/navigation system into the ship. It’s Basicly cannon that the ship half flys itself

Devan Devan Apparently when Rian Johnson was asked about bombs in outer space he threw out the idea of them having some magnetic capability to draw them down towards the First Order ships…In other words he didn’t really give it any thought at all it was just something thrown together. I didn’t hate the design so much as I hated the idea of the thing. Just a bad plot device…The influence of World War II bomber design was too overt with tail gun turrets and the crew even wearing caps that were direct copies of WWII bomber crew outfits.
Hmmm, as i thought about the faling bombs : the bomber has an athmosphere shield (to hold in the air when bomb shafts are opened) and also have an artifical gravity generator.. the bobs will be acelerated by the artificial gravity, pass the athmosphere shield and stay in this state.

They were doing all the live action star fighters.
I think the video is specifically just showing ‘starfighters’ ....so maybe they don’t class some of the other ships as fighters?
@@macgruber7948 why not? they did the TIE Striker, which they pointed out was meant to be an in-atmosphere fighter.

George Lucas saw an iron laying on his cloths and said I like that... so we turned the clothing iron into a ship. I always thought the Slave 1 looked like an iron.
