My TV is HadR10 and not Dolby Vision. Maybe that might be why it doesn't look right on my TV on Disney+. I don't have the film's on 4K Blu Ray but on Disney+ the image on everything HDR looks dark and a bit washed out on my TV. I bought my TV on Black Friday a year and a half ago for half price @ €400
My Disney Plus going through my 4K Fire Stick and lost the Atmos, I contacted the Fire Stick Chat and they said they are working on the issue, as I had Atmos before.
Seripmac Dolby Vision is almost always going to look at least a little better than HDR 10 and in some cases, more than slightly better. Seeing as how the Dolby Vision is on streaming and the HDR10 is on disc, we don’t know how they compare with these movies because of possible streaming compression and such, since Shane didn’t cover that. I’m not sure if that would make a difference or not.
Bit of a late reply, but hopefully I can clear things up. There was an analysis done on the Disney+ and the Blu ray version which confirms that while the footage SAYS that it's HDR10+ and/or Dolby Vision, the reality is that the footage is still just an SDR transfer wrapped in an HDR container. Therefore, the Blu Ray will 100% look better due to the higher bit rate on the discs. The Disney+ version has no additional information. The only advantage that the Disney+ version MAY have is that Dolby Vision has dynamic HDR, which means that the brightness levels can change on a scene by scene basis rather than be static. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the Disney+ version actually does this, as I'm not aware that anyone's checked. Also, apparently due to the DNR, the 2011 Blu rays actually have more detail in some scenes. Hope this helps! (Also, If you're into that sort of thing, the 4K77, 4K83 and soon to be 4K80 fan transfers are very detailed, as long as you don't mind a bit of grain).
QUESTION: can u stream rent and buy movies from apple tv app on PC in 4K HDR dolby atmos dolby vision? Without owning the apple tv device of course? Or is all those features available only with apple products?
Is the physical versions of these films any different then the Disney + versions? Or are they better then the Blu-ray physical editions? - I was thinking about getting the 9 movie Skywalker set from Best Buy. But I own the previous Blu-ray saga that had 6 films.
Watched it. The sound is bit soft. The intro alone is like on the star wars 7, 8 and 9. The dynamic range is somewhat compressed. Thankfully i have the 1080p of the complete saga which has the thx certified full dynamic range score. But the picture quality is stunning. Looks like it was from yesterday.
Yo, Shane! Your reviews are pretty cool. Hey, I just have some doubts about 3D Blu-Ray compatibility stuff. I do have a 3D and 4K Blu-Ray compatible player and a 4K TV, but is a 3D TV required to play 3D Blu-Rays? Or is there a way to watch them without a 3D TV? I’ll wait for your response. Thanks!
I think a lot of 4K TVs are also 3D compatible - you'd have to check the manual or online to see if yours supports 3D. You'd need 3D glasses too of course.
Do you happen to know if the HDR works now on Disney Plus on the Sony X900 - F? Only bringing this up since you mentioned Disney and I figured you'd know haha
Great review Shane the Star Wars Original Trilogy on 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc look and sounds amazing they never have looked and sounded better with HDR10 and Dolby Atmos Sound
I'll more than likely pick these up even though i have the 2011 Saga box set and original trilogy in separate steel book case releases. Great review guy!
Thank you for doing this comparison. I was curious to see the comparisons between these and the Disney Plus versions. Can you do The Force Awakens 4k as well?
Thanks. I'm trying to justify whether I should by the Skywalker Collection. I own every steelbook in the saga, apart from episode 9. The only titles that I own the 4k are Solo and The Last Jedi. I own an 65 inch LG OLED and a 5.1 Yamaha HT, so I can take advantage of Dolby Vision but not Dolby Atmos. I prefer my Blu rays to the compressed uhd versions on Disney+. It's a letdown that they aren't visually stunning but in the end I'll get them anyway. This is the best version we'll get. Are you going to do a review of 4k blu Ray for The Force Awakens?
Waiting for my Skywalker collection. I did watch them on Disney plus but I did hear quality on physical disc is much better hoping to start watching them tomorrow
Lazarrez Velazquez ti seems that disney+ did not have any hdr enhancements in episodes 4 to 6... and that is bad... some videstremer did compare blu ray and disney+ and find out that hdr was only Name in these films, not execution.
There were different LaserDisc releases where Star Wars and Empire came on more than one disc. The releases you’re probably referring to were sped up slightly to decrease the run time.

The original version of Star Wars (1977) and Return of the Jedi are available online. Search for 4k77 and 4k83. Fans have restored old 35mm prints in 4k. They're available with DNR and without DNR. Or it supposed to be like this like "v-log" on 4k cameras (gh5/s5)?
I am curious to know how different A/V reviewers can come up with such drastically different conclusions, such as the previously mentioned Blu-ray.com review of Episode 5 today.
Hi there....im a HUGE Star Wars fan but I'm not overly tech savvy but thought this question I'm asking 4 years later might be valid. I've just bought a brand new 4k tv with obviously newer tech than what was around 4 years ago when you made this review. So my question is, would these 4k films look better on newer tvs with better upscalling and features like quantom dot technology? I hope my question makes sense and I'd love your feedback as im thinking about adding these 4k versions to my collection 🙌😊 Thanks so much🙌😊

I don't have a 4k bluray player so I'd pass for now. The Disney Plus Version is perfectly fine and I'm pretty sure it's even better than the 2011 bluray versions. Not sure I'd really be that wowed anymore by the 4k discs. Sure side by side they will likely be marginally better buts that not worth me going out and spending over £100 on a 4k disc player that I'd use very occasionally.
I still have my trilogy laserdisc box set that has the original versions of these movies. Except for the opening crawl change to Star Wars as Episode IV: A New Hope, they're the original edits that you saw in theaters when they were new.
Don't see enough people mentioning this, so I guess I'll be that guy: your review for all three films is incredibly confusing because you are using footage from the old 2011 blu ray master yet you clearly make it seem like the focus is on the 2020 disney set. In fact, it sounds like you're reviewing the old one because your comments about black levels, contrast and blurriness are contradictory when you look at the new one.
You are correct about one thing. You're clearly confused about what your watching. The clips are used so you can go back and reference those scenes on your own disc. There isnt a single clip on UA-cam that will show the full quality of anything on physical media. The clips here are just a visual aid. I know you get this but you want to be smart.
I maybe watched a random movie or 2 on Disney+ a few Xmen animated episodes and the Simpsons and all of the Mandalorian. I Maybe watched 10 or 20 mins of the Star Wars films on Disney+ just trying them out. Saying oh yeah I'm going to watch these. But I never did? So much at my fingertips. It stopped me watching. I had Disney+ since it launched. So I canceled my subscription and bought all the Star wars 4ks except Last Jedi awful film and solo. because it's boring. I've already watch the 1st 3 Star Wars films 4k blurays. Dolby Atmos is fantastic!
Disney + is never worth it. All this stuff is free if you’re going to connect online anyway. And fan restorations will be better since they won’t include the “NOOOOOO!” At the end of ROTJ which completely ruins the moment.

How do the lightsabers look on the 4K discs? Earlier this year, I purchased the Disney regular Blu-ray copy of The Empire Strikes Back, and it was no different than the pre-Disney Blu-rays from 2011. Vader's lightsaber still looked pink, instead of red.
Physical discs allways. 😊👍
Does new hope have the McKlunky line for greedo? As that will influence my decision in getting the 4K versions of these movies also any other changes worth mentioning in the scenes as well as dialogue as well
rogue one star wars story is the best 4k blue ray than all the other star wars transfers
Glad to hear, love that movie.
I think I will go either normal blurays or disney+ for these
have they got rid of the colour problems on the blu rays? ie having too much of a red tint (see the pink hangar lights around the x wing in new hope)
Hello
Can you do 4k movie review for all of the harry potter i have only seen Deathly Hallows part two It was brilliant.
Thank you
My Disney Plus going through my 4K Fire Stick and lost the Atmos, I contacted the Fire Stick Chat and they said they are working on the issue, as I had Atmos before.
Would love your input on the quality of mandalorian. Very sad it’s not coming to UHD
Update: seasons 1 and 2 are being released on 4K Blu-ray this holiday season. Happy Life Day!
@@DogmaFight ah that’s great news happy to hear it!
My question is, how do these compare to Harmy's Despecialized Editions?
This is the most important question.
So what do you prefer, hdr or dolby vision? Which looks better?
Frozen grain is a huge problem on these discs
@@vebjorngrytten7629 so dolby vision handles the grain better?
@@Seripmaci dont know
Seripmac Dolby Vision is almost always going to look at least a little better than HDR 10 and in some cases, more than slightly better.
If my Sony UHD player supports Atmos 2.1 the 7.1 track won't play, right?
QUESTION: can u stream rent and buy movies from apple tv app on PC in 4K HDR dolby atmos dolby vision? Without owning the apple tv device of course? Or is all those features available only with apple products?
I truly love the surround sound on all the Star Wars movies, I have floor speakers so the sound is totally out of this World 🔊🔊🔊
So typically do you prefer Disc (but it only has HDR10) or Digital (but it has Dolby Vision)?
Is the physical versions of these films any different then the Disney + versions? Or are they better then the Blu-ray physical editions? - I was thinking about getting the 9 movie Skywalker set from Best Buy. But I own the previous Blu-ray saga that had 6 films.
How much of the original trilogy was changed this time?
Only bringing this up since you mentioned Disney and I figured you'd know haha
its good enough safe yourself the money. Half of the star wars films made by disney without george lucas are crap anyways.
Great review Shane the Star Wars Original Trilogy on 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc look and sounds amazing they never have looked and sounded better with HDR10 and Dolby Atmos Sound
I actually don't watch the three original Star Wars movies on Disney+, I just watch them on DVD made by 20th Century Fox.
I'll more than likely pick these up even though i have the 2011 Saga box set and original trilogy in separate steel book case releases. Great review guy!
Great shirt. OT OG. Did you notice any of issues where the voices didn't quite match up?
I did not.
Thank you for doing this comparison. I was curious to see the comparisons between these and the Disney Plus versions. Can you do The Force Awakens 4k as well?
Guess not .he is really busy lol
It has the 20th Century-Fox logo and fanfare.
Yes it does.
@@therealshanelee Because 20th Century-Fox and Lucasfilm Ltd. are both part of Disney.
When do you think we will see 4K Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogy blu-rays?
Waiting for my Skywalker collection. I did watch them on Disney plus but I did hear quality on physical disc is much better hoping to start watching them tomorrow
Lazarrez Velazquez ti seems that disney+ did not have any hdr enhancements in episodes 4 to 6... and that is bad... some videstremer did compare blu ray and disney+ and find out that hdr was only Name in these films, not execution.
Would you recommend watching the 4k disney + or the 1080 bluray I own?
4K. Definitely
Why would they even consider using noise reduction?!
Because some people love to bitch about grain.
I'm assuming these don't have the original cuts in them? It didn't look like it
The shortest one is over two hours long? I thought Laserdiscs only held 2 hours, and only ROTJ had two discs... Were ep 4 and 5 edited!?
There were different LaserDisc releases where Star Wars and Empire came on more than one disc. The releases you’re probably referring to were sped up slightly to decrease the run time.
schorman13 Wow! I grew up with low def, non-letterboxed, accelerated copies...and they were amazing. Thanks for the weird info!
Are the Disney plus version not in Dolby atmos
They are. Just more compressed.
This is an excellent review! Ep 4 and Rogue for me. That'll be fine thanks
Frozen grain is a huge problem on these discs
I love Rogue One as much as the original trilogy, great prequel to Ep 4. Those four movies are the only ones I care about/will watch in future.
Would be cool to see/hear you and Brass Tax discuss you feelings about these transfers, not another review, but just a discussion. I think that would be tasssssssttayyy!
I think Disney + is good enough unless you just want to collect them on disc but that's just my opinion
Really disappointed that the original but cleaned up cuts of ep4-6. are not included, with different branching and chapters it could have easily been done even with the new atmos soundtrack without to much editing as I really hate the cuts over time and mixing with the story
I will always go Physical. So yeah, I am picking up all the Beatles White Albums agine ...Wait... All the Star Wars movies for a 3rd time :)
I just wanna know where it’s better? Disney+ or iTunes?
D+
I'm perfectly fine with fan restorations. I hope fans take some footage from this transfer to restore the Orginal version in 4k.
The original version of Star Wars (1977) and Return of the Jedi are available online. Search for 4k77 and 4k83. Fans have restored old 35mm prints in 4k. They're available with DNR and without DNR. They look fantastic, but are pretty huge in terms of file size at about 80gb. These are the actual original versions of the film, unlike the Harmy Despecialized Editions, which are a mishmash between different releases to best restore the films to how they originally were. Unfortunately, The Empire Strikes Back 35mm print restoration is still being worked on because that print was in the worst quality.
Here are some links for more info.

@@HiltonGoodeDU looks like 4k 80 is making good progress. I reckon late 2021. As long as people donate itll help the progress. Some of his reels are really damaged. Hopefully he'll buy a reel thatll ease some of the work load.
Thank you for this review. The only reason I would upgrade would be for Atmos, and it sounds like their in the future for me...this will be the Sixth time buying this (Hopefully the last).
So should I just be happy with my blu rey and dvd collection
Bro left the tag on the shirt. Took it back for a refund after this bideo.
Does the emperor have the slug? Always bothered me
No
@@therealshanelee Oh, that's good to know. Thank you!
Hi. I just recently bought 4k blu ray player with 4k "waterworld" and I noticed that the picture is darker and colorless than related blu ray.
I noticed it also on you tube movies 4k vs. blu ray comparison. (" ua-cam.com/video/NbTWvicoA7U/v-deo.html ")
Do you know what am I doing wrong in my settings on tv or 4k blu ray player?
Or it supposed to be like this like "v-log" on 4k cameras (gh5/s5)?
I am curious to know how different A/V reviewers can come up with such drastically different conclusions, such as the previously mentioned Blu-ray.com review of Episode 5 today.
Haven't read that review. Maybe he's using a Hisense.
I hope my question makes sense and I'd love your feedback as im thinking about adding these 4k versions to my collection 🙌😊
Thanks so much🙌😊
Miss when they made these THX Certified. No more since Disney bought starwars
For $7/ month (free trial for me) it's worth getting just to watch these movies. I only signed up for the free trial to watch all of them. Yea, I'm cheap 😅 I'll wait for price drop.
Please.. Please please Parmount let's have Star Trek Moves transfered into 4K next!!!
There is a massive difference I’ve compared the 2
These movies defently look the best out of all 9 for that 4k, besides rouge one which is true 4k.
Shout out to the Despecialized Editions
I still have my trilogy laserdisc box set that has the original versions of these movies. Except for the opening crawl change to Star Wars as Episode IV: A New Hope, they're the original edits that you saw in theaters when they were new.
thank god i didnt pay full price on the skywalker collection on 4k blue ray i paid for mine 149 ,00
If you own the bluray, don't bother.
Yeah but....... Is disney + good enough? How do they compare? That would have been nice to know.........
Disney plus please give us the original trilogy in its unchanged theatrical version
Yeah it's weird, there is so much to choose from on Netflix but I hardly ever watch that. Prefer to buy the stuff I really want on disc.
It’s such a crime that the best LOOKING 4K Star Wars movie is also really the only one I have no desire to watch. Lol.
Disney + is never worth it. All this stuff is free if you’re going to connect online anyway. And fan restorations will be better since they won’t include the “NOOOOOO!” At the end of ROTJ which completely ruins the moment.
Some fan you are if pirating is the way to go for you...
schwartzy65 I’ve bought these movies twice over now, 1999 VHS and 2004 DVDs. If you think “being a fan” means NEVER QUESTION CONSUME PRODUCT THEN GET EXCITED FOR NEXT PRODUCTS HAND YOUR WALLET OVER WITH A SMILE and nothing else then your definition differs from mine and others’.
They wanted to bring balance to the entire skywalker saga🤩😏
Why do they keep screwing us over on the Dolby Vision on UHD discs? They give us Dolby Atmos but not Dolby Vision, it seems so silly especially when Dolby Vision can actually help with most sets not being anywhere near a thousand nits.
Disney starting to become like what EA is to gaming if they are not careful
