  • When I went to art school in the late 60s Edward Bawden was high on the list of worthy contemporary illustrators and artists it was hoped we would learn from. But at that time I was completely obsessed with cartoons and I couldn't see what all the fuss was about.
But as the years went by I started to find his work increasingly absorbing. Now I'm considerably older and more catholic in my tastes I can appreciate the many sterling qualities of his skills and visual imagination. I hope you can too.

One of the problems of UA-cam is the feeling, after you've been on the platform a while, that you could have spent better use of your time... and a certain shame that creeps up... That is NEVER the case with your videos. It's such a rich and rewarding viewing experience... time after time. THANK YOU, Pete!

Hello and I'm very grateful for that comment. At the risk of sounding a bit pompous I find that the opportunity for youtube to be a platform for education (in its broadest sense) has like TV before it been squandered. Even if I do like the occasional kitten video.

Weirdly, my wife received a card yesterday from her father and on it was an image by Bawden. Inside a letter from him explaining that Bawden had been his tutor and the RC and that some yrs later Bawden’s son Richard came to study under my father in law at the St Martins after doing a year at Chelsea. My father in law was head of illustration at the time and asked why Richard had changed to St Martins. He said said that his dad had told him to change and study under my father in law, who said it was one of the greatest compliments he ever received. Bawden knew Ravilious of course and later my father in law taught Ravilious’s son James at St Martins. I knew James too, meeting him through my own work for Exeter museum. He had two exhibitions there and during the installation of one he brought in one of his father’s sketchbooks, which was packed with drawings and totally fascinating. I also worked with James’s daughter Ella on a couple of shows she couriered to the SW on behalf of the V&A. THe world is a very small place at times .

During lockdown, and thanks to an ArtUK online article, I became entranced by the work of, the previously unknown to me, Eric Ravilious and through that to Great Bardfield and Edward Bawden. @@petebeard Thanks for taking the time to be so incredibly kind and thoughtful. I appreciate the expertise and the love of art that you share with us all.
I wondered if you are familiar with the slide guitar of the late great Jesse Ed Davis? He played with Leon Russell, John Lennon, Taj Mahal and John Trudell in the band "Aka Graffiti Man " He was born in Oklahoma and was a favorite musician in Las Angeles for years. I had the pleasure of meeting him and he was a gentleman and very friendly and welcoming to me. He was playing with John Trudell and aka Graffiti Man at the time. He was fantastic on the guitar and he had a joyful capacity for taking the music to a place of soulfulness and spine tingling vibrational energy that was unequaled and unique. Check out his talent and the many different people that he played with. I think you will absolutely love his work.

Hello again and yes I know of the late Mr. Davis through his work on the first 3 Taj Mahal albums, and I admire it greatly. The Natch'l Blues is an all time favourite. I wasn't aware of his other connections though and I'll check them out, and I didn't know he played slide. The stuff I know is concert tuned, or at least I assumed so.

His style never wavered much in his diversity of projects, which I like when the style is always so fun and engaging. His interpretations always unique - that one early on where he's at a birds-eye view, revealing the labyrinthine pattern of the buildings below. Just excellent. It's hard to separate your own biases and knowledge of history, but I'm struck by how much of the narrative of his life seems to come through in his work. There's a sense generosity/innocence in his early depiction of characters that seems to be lost after the war. A tad of blissful exuberance after his marriage. A general sense of chaos, escape, and austerity post war. He seems to regain some of his earlier whimsy later in life, but it's still not free from subtle undertones of sadness, caution, and distance. I suppose that's not exactly a groundbreaking idea but perhaps it's just the way so much emotion seems to come through via style, pallette, composition, perspective in addition to the obvious of the actual subject matter.

Unlike many of your other subjects, I am completely unfamiliar with his work and this video is the first i have even seen the mention of his name. Hi again, and I think you'll be far from alone in not previously knowing about Bawden's work. Even in Britain he's far from a household name, despite the fact that he used to be precisely that. There were several others among his contemporaries working in similar styles and I'll be featuring them further down the line. If the videos make even a few converts it's better than the alternative.

I’ve enjoyed your videos for some time now, and love both the subject matter and presentation, so I’m embarrassed to say the thing that prompted me to leave my first comment was my bugbear of the spaces left by that pair of A’s and W’s in the thumbnail. Overall, I appreciate the depth of your research and beautiful presentation of that research. Cheers.
