Minimalist Self Care (& how I look at it differently now!)

  • How I look at self care has evolved quite a bit over the years! It used to involve Taco Bell, and/or Starbucks and mindlessly wandering around Target. I've since learned a little more about what my mind and body ACTUALLY need to feel recharged and it is SO much more effective ;)

My husband and I used to go cruising. A pretty cost effective way to spoil yourself. Now we cannot. And because of his health, we probably never will again. So, we are taking Staycations. Right now we are on a cruise to Japan. We order fancy food, take virtual tours online, go to Trivia online (one of our faves while cruising). We are watching Japanese themed movies and Japanese food when possible. And we look on the bright side: No packing and unpacking, no tiring trip to the port and back, no temptation to buy souvenirs and jewelry, AND we get to take our little dog with us!

Self-care ideas (that I've used before) with really little kids:
    .Stay in bed longer
    .Get up earlier
.Read a story you love to them
.Have a "Christmas ball" any time of year
.Have the small children help stir the food with a chopstick (they feel like they're helping, and they can't really make a mess)
.Sing at the top of your voice
    .Take them on a walk
    .Teach a favorite children's song
    . Create something during naptime
    . Nap during naptime
. Let them make a mess (outside)
    . Feed the ducks
    . Take tons of pictures
    . Pray out loud often

My oldest is now 15, but I still have lots of little ones. One thing I do for self-care is to try to get in my bed when we send the younger ones to bed. I still spend 2-3 hours reading or watching shows with my husband, but I don't worry about the house or getting any projects done or anything. And when my older kids are out working or hanging out with friends after the little ones go to bed, my husband goes to pick them up, because I am usually already in bed. It's wonderful.

I had a friend pass away from cancer at the start of quarantine last year and that hit me really hard. I realized that there is no time like the present and I started taking up art again and focusing on creating beautiful and relaxing spaces in my home. That's how I found your channel. I taught myself how to watercolor paint, I limited my social media access to almost nothing and prioritized on connecting with others in different and more meaningful ways other than a thumbs up. When I'm feeling stressed I turn to creating something beautiful whether it's a painting, or in my garden or making something fun like a wreath for my front door. It's how I unwind and let the weight lift off my shoulders.

Thank you for your perspective. I especially appreciated your comments about taking mind-free walks to let your mind process the events of the day. Remember how Christ often took walks in the wilderness or beyond city limits just so He could think and pray? If we're trying to be like Him, I figure giving ourselves these time-out periods is pretty smart. For me, I take short strolls a couple times each day or make it a point to sit outside for about a half hour on sunny days. I also have one day weekly that is technology-free. Your comments about having a good belly laugh and watching a favorite episode of something also struck a chord: I combine the two before bedtime and laugh aloud at the antics of characters on old Frazier reruns. Grammer and Pierce were so good playing off one another---and they didn't even need words! Yes, my dog looks up at me quizzically, but his mug makes me laugh all the more. Final comment that was a new thought for me: permitting one's self to get rid of "guilty clutter". Oh, how I appreciate that! It also had me do a double take thinking about the unsaid expectations I've placed on receivers of gifts I gave in past years. I would not want others to think k they HAD to hang onto and display stuff I gave just because it was from me. In recent past I've changed my expectations and try to tell people, " I hope this is something useful; if not, feel free to give it to someone else." In one statement, I've released them from having to keep something just because and granted permission to release it in case they're still stuck in the mindset that letting go of an item would somehow be seen as being disloyal or damaging their relationships. You have a nice way of putting things, Dawn, that is relatable and non-threatening, in that it feels doable. Keep up the good ideas and videos! 😊

I am not a get up and communicate person. I need quiet time when I wake up. I need that hour to just think...about my day, my goals, my prayer time. I NEED it. So, after years of not getting it or feeling guilty about it, I decided to address it with my husband. I was worried that this would be perceived as "i dont want to be with you", or " just leave me alone". I would never do anything to hurt my husband's feelings, but seriously I need that time. So I did address it and he was awesome about it. We call it, "wake up time". I took the time to really explain why I need it and how I feel if I don't get it. Surprisingly he totally understood the need for private space. ( of course he's the best husband of 31 years a girl could get). If I get my wake up time, throw anything at me and im good..lol

Thank you Dawn for this message. We get so caught up in things that need to be done, especially women, because we have that nurturing nature to take care of everyone else and then we neglect ourselves. I keep promising myself that I'm going to start walking, but I never get around to it because there's always something else to do. I'm going to have to be intentional and remind myself that the laundry will still be there when I get back!

Self-care has always been at the bottom of my list. I’ve been an extremely busy mom of 5. I have three still at home. But what I have found is that downsizing and minimizing my living space has been self-care to me. I’m more calm because my environment is not a cluttered mess. I’m a natural minimalist...that’s what I call myself. I always wear the same clothes, jewelry, shoes, purse, etc over and over. But I have tried to be the opposite because as a woman, that’s what is put before us...more, more, more. But for me, that has not worked. What you have been putting forth, and FlyLady, and Joshua Becker, etc. this is what has helped me. I sleep better now. Thank you for what you are doing. May you and your entire family be blessed!!

My peace is in the garden. I can forget all of my cares by planting things, tending to them, and harvesting food. It's so rewarding. Spending time with my dog also reduces stress, whether that is taking a walk, playing, or snuggling on the couch. Getting rid of clutter in my house has been very therapeutic too. It feels like weight is lifted every time I get a space well organized. I used to soak in the tub too, but I need to remodel my bathroom and it's not really relaxing any more. I plan to get a new soaker tub later this year so I can enjoy that again. Fun video. Thanks.

I found that doing art feeds my soul. Before I would just get in the car and blast whatever music I was feeling at the moment and that really fed my soul. With not going out hardly ever these days there wasn't much music blasting and in the first months of lockdown I began to feel HUGE amounts of anxiety, something I didn't typically have an issue with, and after commenting how I wanted my friend to come teach me how to paint she mailed me a bunch of her supplies as a surprise and that started a journey into art for me. I have always been a crafter but painting was foriegn to me. I loved to look at art but was intimidated. I now have several forms of art I do and it brings so much peace. Now when I can't blast music I have another outlet to feed my soul. It has also made doing crafting fun again because I have other outlets that if I am not feeling something one day I have other things I love to fall back on.

Yoga or cardio every day, a new mattress pad that fixed my back, quality skincare, some clothes that fit my body better, mindful nutrition, etc, and it is going great so far. I've never heard anyone talk about escape vs. care before, that makes so much sense. A must! Working from home, I started exercising more during that time. Plus I make sure I have time to journal my morning prayers and read my devotions. It started as a 20 minutes however since covid I am spending 40-45 minutes in the morning. Sets such a great time for my day!!!

Dawn, this is a great way to break self care down and how to really care for ourselves, not just escape!

Thought the same thing. Either being married to a "car" guy, or growing up on a farm - one of the two!

Thanks so much for sharing! That would be a bucket list item for me, to have coffee with you! I think that would be one of the coolest things to do. I have followed you for a long while and really enjoy your content and the addition of the faith tips here and there you impart as well, really uplifting.

I have found that being more minimal at home and school has helped. I still struggle with emotional eating but am finding that painting or art journaling is another form of escape.

Dawn, I think seeing faces like yours has been a really good mood booster! You young gals have so much wisdom. And you and your husband have made me laugh so many times.

Thank you Dawn! Such a blessing!
I take a mommy's night once a week. I am introverted and need that said much to recharge from raising a 7 year old and a 2 year old. My mommy's night means I don't put the kids to bed or cook dinner or clean. I can do anything I want in or out of the house. Mostly it always includes a bath. Every chance I get I recommend other Moms put this on their family calendar and make it happen!

You’re such an inspiration Dawn! Most things you say I can relate to, and thanks to you, Natalie Bennet and Joshua Becker I started truly decluttering my house. I just wanted to say thank you ❤️
