perfect combination of eagerness, motivation, passion, and self-consciousness. That is how good craftsmen are born Thanks for showing that these young men are still there
I'm 65 years old and coming to the end of my working life. I've been in the motor trade and latterly the brewing industry, both of which I've enjoyed but I do wish in hindsight that I'd followed my late Father into the construction industry. This young man is an absolute star, not only is he an articulate individual, he's heading for the top of his game. With chaps like him in the game the construction industry is in safe hands. I'd really like to shake his hand and thank him for his dedication to the British construction industry. I'm envious of him. Thanks Roger for bringing him to our attention.
Great Chipie! That’s a lad who’s loves to learn and loves his trade. Nice to see a young person own their job, listens when unsure and confident to display his knowledge. Great to see

Where do you find lads like this? He's interested, Hardworking, and sharper than one of Robin Clevitts chisels👍 I'd be happy to find one that could stay off drugs and get up out of bed!
Going by what Elliot said he’s about to start his 3rd year at the carpentry trade ? In Ireland apprenticeships in bricklaying ,carpentry, plastering electrics etc are 4 years duration . They are made up of mostly onsite work and block releases to institute of technology (i.t) . When I served my time in the early 80s most guys would start serving there time at age 16 or 17 and be out of there time at 20 or 21 ,by the end of your 4 year training period you’d be expected to be capable of working independently. Elliot looks like he’s going to be a good one . I suspect he’s capable of doing the whole of that roof independently. Beth skinner ( who would be out of her time by now ) is an impressive bricklayer and Darcie from rattle kings who’s only at the bricklaying trade I think just over a year is very impressive .very confident person . From the outside looking in at mostly English based construction channels the word apprentice seems to be used very loosely . I wonder how many of they guys being referred to as an apprentice in these are actually properly registered and following a definitive course to being qualified tradesmen . Very little I suspect . Especially in the bricklaying trade it seems to be mostly laboring they do .
What a lovely guy, and so young too! Very mature for his age and explains his techniques very well. Lovely to see this, I hope he goes far, and hope to see more of him on the channel in the future.
Wow, what a breath of fresh air. Unbelievable for a 20 year old....... He's even showing Roger tricks. Roger get this kid to do an odd tool review or feature on your channel .
This Young man is a rarity. His attitude and approach are rightly being applauded. Clearly being taught the right way along with a passion for his trade are the key ingredients here. Good stuff.
What a joy to see the enthusiasm shown by Eliot and Dan. I have recently retired from 20+ years teaching carpentry in an FE college (previous 28 years in industry) and the greatest job satisfaction from teaching is to see young carpenters developing their skills and eventually completing their qualification. A big pat on the back for Dan who is willing to spend time with eliot to explain not only how things are done, but why they are done in certain ways. Too many employers do not spend time with these apprentices and need to remember what it was like when they started out on their journey. Well done Eliot, I hope we can follow your progress with Dan.
Not only is this young man a credit to himself and his craft but he also must give Dan a great deal of incentive and pride to pass on his knowledge to such an enthusiastic apprentice. To hand down your craft skills to a person is the ultimate acknowledgment of confidence in that said person. Lovely little film Rog, it would be great to see the young lads progress over a series of programmes.
Just come across this video and I can honestly say that Elliott has reinstalled my faith in the youth of today! With guys like him in the trade the future looks bright. Intelligent enthusiastic worker, kudos to you mate! Keep it up.👍
Being an old retired chippy myself, it's a pleasure to see this young lad with so much skill already and his enthusiasm is excellent. He deserves to do so well in the future, he is a credit to our trade.

Well done to the young man. Took me back years when I built my house. Paper and pencil basic geometry and hard graft with saw, hammer and nails and level. Pride on the finished job was immense. Roof has never moved in over 40 years. Keep up the good work chaps.

I'm not a builder, I'm a musician and I know all too well that any skill is going to take dedication and hard work to acquire. Obviously Elliot takes the same view. Good on him!

Great video, this is when the building trade really works, bright, keen youngster and experienced guys working alongside each other. Good luck to him, the next Robin Clevett!!
Good to see such quality coming through! I was going down the route of carpentry after school but after 3 yrs and seeing how many low skilled “trades people” were coming in and pulling down the earning potential, I decided to go to Uni and in to IT. However I really enjoyed carpentry, almost as if it were a hobby and not a job and the satisfaction of building something was great. People need to appreciate that just because someone calls themselves a certain trade, it doesn’t always make it so, and for quality work, it is right and worth paying more. It’s good to see wages in trades are now being pushed up again and people like this remind everyone what quality work looks like!
I was a carpenter and then carpenter foreman for 30+ years, now retired, and this boy has a rare commodity - enthusiasm, so many appentices fall at the first hurdle typically when they are finally left alone to do something like a cut roof, it's not easy and many walk away or keep to mundane easy carpentry like laying floors, or forever following behind a real carpenter, today on site most of the skills are simple basic assembly work, without the need for real skill i.e. nailing trussed roofs together. Good lad and good luck.
My dad was an ACE carpenter in Canada and I see this young chap doing this just as he did in show I how to do these roof truss. Great to see young man coming on in this industry.

Really advanced common sense, just kind of understood how things work, and he had endless energy, super polite and positive. I was blown away.
Thanks for sharing this, hopefully it will be an inspiration for other young people to get into a trade, this lad has a job for life. We have a huge shortage of skilled tradesmen, I have done my time on the tools which lead to becoming a building services designer, and now as I have semi retired at 68 I use my knowledge as a Clerk of Works for one client. Its so refreshing to see someone enjoying what they do and not constantly looking on there phone.
Love it. My brother showed me this 30 years ago. He could pre cut an entire conventional roof in his workshop on rain days and take to site on his truck.
Remarkable young man who looks like he is going far in his trade. Confidence can be a great asset, you keep your feet on the ground and never forget that you are always learning. Well done Elliot.
You can never tell but he doesn't strike me as a Prima-Donna. Let us hope that remains the case, sometimes when people keep telling you how good you are you start to believe it.
nice to see some youngsters getting excited about roofing. one of my favorite jobs as a joiner.. my mate that i worked with was the best roofer, trouble was he had big massive clumsy hands so i had to do all of the cuts as i was neat with a saw, he was great with his head. we used to fix a saddle of 9 x 1 across the rafters at the ridge to fix the pin rafter and the hips rather than just nailing them to the top of the rafters obviously moving the main rafters back by an inch to keep the pitch equal. the saddle gives a better fixing area. just remember to mark the thickness back on the wall plate. most roofs now are botched with no consideration to the skill in the cuts. we used to use a ready reckoner which gives all of the cuts length of jacks hips purlins etc with deminishing lengths for the jacks, pitches the lot, although i too use similar methods for getting the angles correct. and always throw a long straight edge across as there's not much worse to look at as a bump or hollow in a roof. well done lads, now remember to fit a saddle.
From 30+ years as a carpenter this video has warmed my heart. This lad has us in good hands. Well done.
My feeling exactly James👍I was starting to think lads like Elliot no longer existed😬

Is right young man!!! And props to you Roger for putting the spotlight on a skilled young lad like that! Great vid as always 👌
Love it. My brother showed me this 30 years ago. He could pre cut an entire conventional roof in his workshop on rain days and take to site on his truck.
Respect to this young man, he has a great future.
Keep up the good work young man.
Lovely to see the cut roof being done properly.
Great attitude for a bright future 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
