    When British actors do an American accent, the R's are sometimes stressed in a studied way that is a "tell" to our ears. And sometimes, the actor will opt for something like a Texas drawl, that gives them a hook they can use. Also, it is amusing the way British writers will often salt American characters' dialogue with unlikely or invented slang like "wangdoodle", and frequent similes, like "He's lower than a snake's belly." (Do we really talk like that?) Still, it's lovely that they try so hard and often succeed -- there is no doubt that British actors are remarkably well trained and talented, on the whole, even those in small parts. My wife and I greatly enjoy all the mystery shows from England, and the occasional American character is always fun to watch, as a clue to what they think of us and how we sound. And some actors display real genius at the accent, like Hugh Laurie, or Rosamund Pike.

    • @keepinmahprivacy9754
      @keepinmahprivacy9754 3 роки тому +8

      Yes, some of them are easily noticeable, but there are quite a few Brit actors I knew originally from American films or television, and then a few years later heard their real voice and was totally surprised that they were not native Americans. There are not so many American actors that have managed to master the British accent to that level.

    • @Robb0h
      @Robb0h 3 роки тому +3

      Speaking only to the portion of your comment about the Texas drawl & slang: I have many friends/acquaintances that often non-ironically use slang just like "madder than a wet hen", "all hat, no cattle" "lower than a snakes belly" (in fact I've heard that exact one from a friend) and a bunch of other stuff you would think was made up for the movies out here in West Texas. So my answer to that particular question is... around here.... yes, "we" do talk like that haha. I'm sure I would sound just like that as well... if I hadn't fallen for a girl that moved here from Southern California in high school that made fun of my twang (fy-are = fire, ole=oil etc) and "strange sayings".

      Have you watched Emily Blunt playing a Valley Girl ?

    • @davidecolin
      @davidecolin 2 роки тому +1

      Yes, but then again you have American actors and everyday folks that also stress their R's, yet they still sound American... And you have those who grew up in different American regions and develop a somehow merged accent. Johnny Depp's accent is a wonderful example of this. He has a somewhat unique American accent. If I didn't know that Johnny Depp was American or that Rosamund Pike was British and I watched a movie of them where they play Americans, I'd say that Pike is an American actress and Depp a British actor trying to sound American. We all just have unique ways of speaking and confirmation bias also comes into play.

    well, I'm an American who spent some childhood years in England .. and I find her voice joyfully English .. a very beautiful and refined woman .. she conveys strength and intelligence in a very soft way .. and I enjoy the nuances of her tone and inflections .. sadly, I'm glad she sounds less American and more English ..

    She was in the movie RETURN TO SENDER , which I thought was very good. but to pretend to be an American, she did the accent so well nobody would have really noticed she was British. She did a great job in the movie

    She was so unbelievably good in "Gone Girl" that I think I'd be a little frightened of her if I met her in person. A wonderful actress!

    I'm learning more from tips geared towards actors to improve my accent as a foreigner than from second language learning videos. I'm at a point I feel like I just need to act out, to anchor my accent/vocal personality at something, and feel fully in my own skin across a wide range of emotional expressions.
