I race BMX @ a National Championship level (51-55 expert) and i put a set of these on my 20” because i like to experiment with stuff. Two nationals down and so far no issues whatsoever. They seem to be of good quality.
Cycling industry went crazy with their prices. More expensive isn't always better. Personally I don't like copy-cats. Engineering is about creating something new, not copying it from another brand.
@@blue-wanderer4392 Tbh this cranks don't have much engineering in them, at the end of the day they use existing stuff like the old 3 bolt sram interface and that's it, the cranks are just a piece of metal with holes in them so there's not to much engineering apart for the materials and i don't think that the 5dev team has some type of "exclusive" alloy; the majority of the time these expensive third party brands are just expensive for the sake of "exclusivity", just look at this or look at INGRID with their ultra expensive rear derailleuir that works worst than a normal sram/shimano rd
That was the first generation, they have since made on the fly adjustments. If you look at the thickness of the cranks around the pedals its now thicker. I have the newer version. No problems so far.
The most important thing is what the qualities of the materials are for their application. Will a component fracture vs bend? are the teeth and chain-ring hardened for wear resistance? Are the materials durable or inferior. A lot of times the materials processing is where the cost lies. It will be very interesting to get updates on the durability of everything you are using to compare. Hope you bought the correct rear brake adapter by now.
One of the first things he said, that it's well build. This is like saying I have x-ray eyes and analyzed multiple pieces of this product. Buying these things is a gamble. If you are just a casual rider sure. Do it. But if you jump or do anything more serious on your bike, buying these things I not a good idea.
As long as it was made from 7000 series aluminum, tolerances between BB and crank arm tight, should hold up. Only way to know is bang on them out on the trails. Inspect the arms and spindle after a few good rides and jumps and look for stress cracks to make sure.
Those look pretty solid and well made! Better than the cranks I got off Ali Express a few years ago, at least I hope. I bought some cheap cranks for my dirt jumper and the pedal ripped right out of the crankarm because the threads were not machined properly... Literally just landed and a second later my pedal fell off... Luckily I rode it out... But these really look way better!
They look and feel amazing, seems like the durability is there! That’s ultimately why I ordered them because they looked too good to be true😂 but I did make some adjustments to the spacing of the cranks since this video and they are still doing well so I’ll keep you guys posted how they do long term 🙏
I have these and I'd never ever spend $500 on real 5Dev cranks, these are very high quality. I bought them just to try as I normally never run aluminum cranks but very happy with them.
Whats the weight? I leave grease off bolts that have loctite on from factory.. looks nice, time will tell… I’d wear a cup and mouthguard when sending double blacks! 😅
They look awesome , I saw these myself on Ebay & I couldn't believe the price they do look quality in the flesh on your bike , will be good if you do a revisit in 6 months so we can see if they are a durable set of cranks , Great vid 👍👍
Cant wait to see the ride review. You didnt steer me wrong with the brakes so i will probably be ordering these as well. I have no problem rolling the dice on products like this, i dont have hundreds of dollars for parts like some of these commenters
The play from these cloned 5DEV comes from the Tapered spindle the crank arms start to move like a bolt rounding off! Just a heads up for something to keep an eye on!
Its easy to make something look as good as the real part, but if the material used/forging/hardening isn't there then its just a pretty looking accident waiting to happen. The fact they are machined out for light weight just makes it worse. P.s If you want to see a pair of these snap under normal use check out pinned tv video from a few weeks ago. good luck
Loving the Yoshimura pedals! FYI, the genuine 5-Dev cranks are trash bc they are weak as hell, especially for enduro or aggressive riding. I'm willing to bet these knock-off cranks are better simply due to the fact that they're made of a heavier, albeit stronger, alloy. Can't wait for the long term review
i bought the same crank and had issues with the bottom bracket to which i didn't bother to return. I would recommend users to buy bb elsewhere. For the preload adjuster, had the same problem and would also recommend for users to buy the preload elsewhere. hope it helps.
I can’t imagine buying a special crank set for my bike. Seems like something for pros looking for an edge, not exactly a game-changer for us amateur riders
I bought an Evosid stem to just see. It was honestly pretty nice. I was bummed that it had aluminum hardware and would NOT accept steel machine screws. I sent it back for that reason but it wasn’t junk. I just can’t bring myself to use anything questionable on critical areas like stems, bars, etc.
Too many new bikes use aluminum and carbon where steel would serve better. I can’t stand it when the recommended torque is so low you absolutely need thread locker to keep the bolts in place. I’ve had no end of issues keeping my bar clamped in place on the stem because the recommended torque limit is only five newton meters. Ridiculous
The metal finish on small oval/curved sections and the threads is usually the dead giveaway of cheap manufacturing equipment I.e. machening. If those aspects look as good IRL as they do on this video, should the aluminium be 7075s , there would be no reason to doubt the quality. Imma buy a pair to check them out.
Well it's important to say that they are not titanium as 5DEV, it's from aluminium AL7075. It is aluminium used in frames, often chosen because it's more stiff (but more fragile than AL6061). Also I would be very cautious, because if they snap on landing (manufacturer doesn't provide any proof or certificate of durability) it can go very bad.
My evosid cranks are great. The matte black matches my matte black eagle chainring. They fit and feel really good. I’ll take those over the 5dev/faux sram cranks anyway. 5 dev took the design from sram and hollowed them out. Flip the sram crank over, the design is nearly the same. Taiwan is the bike manufacturing mecca in the world of cycling. I like my evosid so have my truvativ/sram gx eagle cranks as a spare.
I always use parts from here on my builds where do ya think the normal places you buy parts from get them ... some times there are improfections like branding defects but not had anything fail 😅
Curious about context: have you ever handled 5DEV cranks? And what does it mean if it "feels well built", that it's made of metal? And you paid less than $100 for set of cranks WITH a BB and sprocket. That is absolutely in the category of "cheaply made" Curious to see how these hold up. I'm not for or against 5DEV, but they seem like a lot of hype, and I've heard reports of failure. These actually look like they could be forged (like big S stuff), and may be just as good, provided the material is equivalent
Dude, it looked like the 3 bolts for the chainring had threadlock on them which you then greased? Maybe work checking that in case they work loose on a ride.
People in here saying not to support fake product. Come on, man. Stop overpricing your stuff then! Aluminium uniquely design doesn't means it deserve the $500 price tag. My local rider broke his ankle riding 5dev crank. it broked on the drop. $500 for a carbon crank, sure. but for an aluminium crank? Waaaayyy overpriced and gullible mtb riders will still think they deserver the support when they are just draining your $.
not to say they ARENT solid, but it should be noted that if they havent been properly tested, they could still explode. Consider all the shimano road cranks that have exploded over the years. They all look solid. They very well be great cranks, but there is always risk. 5dev is expensive, but they test VERY thoroughy.
The big companies use the same vendors that all the other companies use for there parts. Tag metals has pedals that origin8 branded, that RaceFace branded, etc., etc., Taiwan has the industry in lock down….
170 is not optimal size for someone 5'7. You should be on 160-165. You do not have to pedal that much faster for the 5-10mm of reduced clearance to be worth it.
Most of the time, higher cost is the R&D and engineering put into developing a product, which is usually a lot for a good product. Also, if you see a brand that's super cheap on ali-express, then it's probably a fake knock-off. They didn't have to pay for the R&D and they just reverse engineered and 3D scanned the product and re-made it.
I've had their fake Ingrid crankset, the one with the dimples in the crankarms. It looks good, but that's it. It is a Total crap. There were reports on ali that they bend, but mine had a problem with the axle that was off dimension. For my 68 mm bb shell with no spacers, the axle was too long for the preload ring to preload. With one spacer it was too short and there was no gap for the ring to preload. It was so tight that the axle barely spun. Then the left arm mounting bolt - it said 54 nm on it and when I tried it with a torque wrench I only rounded it. Eventually I opened a dispute and got a full refund without having to send it back, so now I have a useless piece of scrap metal. It also had a HT2 bb cartrige which was also crap. It was fitted with low quality zz bearings which seized completely after ~3000 km. Also, Luke from Trace Velo had their road crankset with hollow crankarms which he bent too. No wonder considering the design. Anyway, I won't buy anything from Evosid/Zeroing anymore.
If 5Dev can’t make these not snap, I don’t think cheap ripoffs will be any better. A snapped crank can do some serious damage. I would never buy a cheap off-brand critical parts like this, life isn’t worth it. Good luck.
That's way to much play, you should be using a spacer to take up just enough of the play to allow full engagement with crank ram and spindle splines. The preload is not meant to take up that much space.
I’ve seen this all before Since the early 90’s cnc’d cranks that aren’t cold forged are sketchy AF. If the grain structure is not “realigned” through forging then you are dealing with a time-bomb. Tick….tick…tick. Check for cracks frequently, your dentist doesn’t need any more money, but you probably need some teeth
Wouldn’t be surprised if they are made in same factory and one slapped with brand packaging and other is in no name packaging as the factory is trying to make a production run that makes sense to them. Instead of calling these fake, better to call them Off Label and compare quality vs a branded one. Likely branded ones get better quality control.
My mate real 5Dev snapped on him a fortnight ago in a xc race just on a bumpy rocky straight part of the trail the right side just snapped clean off under foot wasn't hit on anything as his video showed so it's just your luck, but i would suggest getting a sram dub spindle just because its got correct cut taper at the ends and solid steel to say rod stock thatll snap or round off like I've seen happen to these clones!
Bought a pair of fake 5 devs from one of these sites and blew the left arm completely off the spindle within 3 days. I'll stick with my Race Face atlases all day
The other thing u didn’t notice is Mcdevs are cnc machined from a single Block of aircraft aluminum. These are forged fro.m Chinese low grade aluminum. So u get what u pay for. 🐔
Many saying dont support the fake, buy genuine, r and d testing etc. How's that working out for Shimano and their crank recall? Or should we say limited recall where they couldnt give a toss about their customers Some of this copy Chinese stuff is pretty good, just dont be flat out sending it
For those, who say don't support fake... plenty of your very important overpriced hype brands products are probably made in the same exact factory in China, they are just selling them overpriced four a ridiculous amount of profit. You just pay extra for having a certain logo on the product. Just like in the fashion business. Bike brands won't go broke because they can't sell their products for cheaper. They don't want to sell them cheaper, because they want unreal profit.
Exactly! The free market only works if you allow the manufacturers to compete to see who makes it better, cheaper, faster. The market will decide what’s worth it and what isn’t. Charging $500 for cranks is so dumb. People paying that much is even dumber. The bike industry has been raking in the money during the COVID craze and now the market might actually match the value.
Except these are (or at least were) sold on ebay as authentic 5dev part. I agree they can make similar parts, but they seem to be deliberately selling them under the 5dev name. I'm also highly suspicious that you could CNC a crank arm like this for ~100 and have it be safe. You could probably cast it, but not CNC it, and if a crank arm breaks you could be in a serious accident.
@@zed625 you can absolutely cast and then finish it ,but casting unless you go for the more expencive processes it might just be safer to buy thick plates and have the very basic outline shape cut out on a waterjet or laser cutter then just machining . With the right fixturing approach you can crank these out fast and accurately . Where i think the "fake" is probably lying is with the alloys used. Im tempted to buy a set just to have it analysed (non destructively) and they would look pretty sharp on my department store hardtail ive been riding for the last 8 years
Considering the fact that 5Devs are blowing up from people using them on commuter bikes, I'm not sure I'd trust these things. Not because they're badly made, but the design is inherently flawed and bad material can only increase the risk of them breaking.
I race BMX @ a National Championship level (51-55 expert) and i put a set of these on my 20” because i like to experiment with stuff. Two nationals down and so far no issues whatsoever. They seem to be of good quality.

For how long have you been riding it? Curious about the durability
@Jereisalem so far just under 400 miles
A comparison of the metallurgy between the knock offs and the real deal might prove enlightening.

What's also funny is the pattern is almost also exactly like what's on the back sides (the ribs) of SRAM DUB cranks.
What crank arm bolt kit did you use to fit the crank arm ? I got a set of these for £30 but they didn't come with the bolts .. cheers mate

Charging $500 for cranks is so dumb. People paying that much is even dumber. The bike industry has been raking in the money during the COVID craze and now the market might actually match the value.
Seriously… Parts are so expensive now.
Im tempted to buy a set just to have it analysed (non destructively) and they would look pretty sharp on my department store hardtail ive been riding for the last 8 years
Theft of designs or intellectual property are not free market policies.
Might be good for a small and lightweight guy like you but for someone that is a lot bigger hard pass for me
I personally would never ever buy fake Bike Parts from Ali for my Bike!
Why are you saying fake its not
its 50usd in china tho.
Too bad that there is no Shimano Hollowtech Version of it
ok... they look real... but are they safe? thats the 1 milion question...
The originals aren't safe in the first place, so idk if these are better or worse 😅
Lang Plaza
Them petals aren’t cheap
Considering the fact that 5Devs are blowing up from people using them on commuter bikes, I'm not sure I'd trust these things. Not because they're badly made, but the design is inherently flawed and bad material can only increase the risk of them breaking.
this is awesome..imona get one too! f.u. 5dev! hahaha
