    My wife and I honeymooned in Oahu and stayed in Waikiki for 7 days in 2014, we only rent a car for one day and we drove around the island and visited a lot of places in North Shore on this day. We took the PCC tour bus to the park and spent 1 day there. The rest of the days we used Da Bus to visit places like Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Kailua State Beach and many other places. It took a long time to use public transportation but we were on our honeymoon so it was a great opportunity to spend time with each other. Our hotel, Pacific Beach, charged 30 dollars a day for self parking! Great video! I enjoy watching your channel!

    You can take the #60 bus from Ala Moana over to the windward side. It goes over to Kaneohe and then up to and then past Kuloa Ranch, all the way to the far end of Haleiwa. And back. If you get a bus pass and load it, you can get around very reasonably. Plus, you can transfer to get a bus to Kailua and Lanikai and not have to park.

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  2 роки тому

    We have stayed on O'ahu for weeks at a time w/o a rental car. We get bus passes. The bus is efficient, cheap and goes all over the island. No need to grind your way through the heavy traffic.
    Once we rented a car for a performance we wanted to see and it was such a hassle, we never did it again. You can reach the Bus on line and check out schedules, destinations, fares etc

    We stayed five days as a family of four in Oahu with no car (we did rent one for the Big Island which we hopped to next). We actually packed our kids Razor scooters in the suitcases and we zipped around Honolulu and Waikiki no problem! My husband and I rented the bikes when we had farther than a few miles to go. They even rode their scooters to Diamond Head from the Hilton! It was a ton of fun, I felt like we saw more of the island that way. We did not venture to the north side of the island though, maybe next time!

      Do you think you could’ve done that with a 1 and 4 year old? I don’t think I’m comfortable letting my four year old ride his scooter around the busy unfamiliar streets of Hawaii and I think having a 1 year old pretty much seals the deal on a must have rental car but if you feel differently I’d like to know.

    I have been to Oahu and while you’re right that you don’t need a rental when you’re staying in Waikiki it is better and time saver to rent one in general. When you’re on vacation you only have a limited number of days and you need to maximize those days and while the bus system is great it could be slow and it doesn’t take you all over Oahu like the North Shore.
    I went to Oahu prior to the Pandemic 😷 and we rented a car for 3 days we didn’t rent for the week. It was so worth it.
    We went to the places that you need a car to get too ie. North Shore and for us it was needed/worth it.
    That was just what works for us and worth it. If you just plan on staying in Waikiki and not venture off to other parts of the island I agree a car is not worth it but if you plan on seeing the other parts the car is definitely with it.

      So true. We've been to Oahu multiple times and rented a car for the duration each time (10 days). We needed it when we stayed in a rental on North Shore, but in Waikiki, the car stayed in the parking garage for most of the time we were there. Next time, we want to stay for a month and we will only rent a car for days when we need to shop for groceries or do specific things where we don't want to rely on bus schedules. We've shopped local rental car companies and Owl looks like the one we will use.

    Yeah but I feel like most people are coming from outsides Hawaii in general so the extra $300 on top of the 3-5k minimum being spent to get there and stay there for 7 days or more is really nothing. I also feel like as long as you plan to leave early on in the day to get where you need to go the traffic isn’t really a factor. It all sounds good in a video but is not that realistic. It is doable to see some places without a car but it is also very very hard , takes long time and very time consuming. Let alone bus goes on average 30-40 min apart. In addition, Uber prices have doubled since 2021 when they had shot the video. North shore Uber costs $80-90 one way, not both. Lighthouse trail $40 one way. Do your research before deciding on going without a car especially if traveling with kids. Took trip to Oahu in September 2022

    Hi Guys,
    Just been bingeing your videos as my partner and I are travelling to Hawaii in December from Australia as our other plans have been cancelled due to COVID-19
    I’m wondering how much of an issue not renting a car is in Oahu as opposed to Maui?
    We have rented a car for our time in Maui but not Oahu would you recommend that we need one for our time in Oahu.
    We are staying in Waikiki at the Hilton

      See if you like the type of itinerary we share in this video to decide if not getting a rental car sounds right for you. If it is two of you and staying in Waikiki, not getting a rental car is very doable.

      The lava isn't flowing into the ocean right now but the volcano is erupting, you can do a one day guided tour from Oahu to the Big Island here: www.hawaiitours.com/oahu/one-day-island-trips/?ref=Jordan (we earn a small commission with this link at no cost to you!)
      Or see our article on island hopping here: thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-island-hopping/

    can you guys do an airbnb vs hotel price video. i find airbnb to be cheaper and directly supports the people of the island. thoughts?

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the comment! We have a video on vacation rentals vs hotels. Vast majority of vacation rentals are owned by out of state investors or out of state second home owners. All islands are cracking down on them as some are illegal. We were going to do a video on identifying illegal vaca rentals but that is hard. Vrbo helped eliminate 2000 illegal rentals on Kauai last year. Vaca rentals are best for large groups to save money. After cleaning fees, taxes, and Airbnb fees they are expensive.

      @@TheHawaiiVacationGuide good point. i noticed some on airbnb saying "LEGAL" and always wondered.. out of state investors need to kick rocks and let the locals thrive on their own island!

    I wonder if renting a car from Turo is cheapest?

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  2 роки тому

      That’s a popular option. Last summer Turo was a good option but not cheaper. But a good way to support local businesses and I bet one can find a good price.

    For those that've rented a car and travel with toddlers .. how do you do it? do you take your own car seat/booster or do they provide one?

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  Рік тому +1

      we take car seats with us, we have a light travel seat that we share here: thehawaiivacationguide.com/hawaii-travel-gear/
      We have a strap for our 5 year old that we will share too. It is hard to lug them to baggage drop-off but they are free to check. You can rent them at the car rental but they are expensive.

    I'll have to respectfully disagree thinking Diamond Head is overrated. At least for that price that was too quick of a hike. The view wasn't bad but to me that's a one-time thing I would not revisit it. Because my group had to go pass, we at least got our money's worth but I would not pay the normal fee just a hike up Diamond Head.

    Can we take our son in an Uber without a carseat?
    Also is it possible to hike the Diamond head with a child?

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide
      @TheHawaiiVacationGuide  Рік тому +1

      Diamond Head is an easy hike but strollers can't go up the trail so you have to walk or carry them. It can get slippery on the uneven surfaces. Car seats are required as far as I know.

    I would say, half the week rent a car with the other having no car. 6-700$ is way to much to not have the ease of a car.

    • @TheHawaiiVacationGuide

      It’s a good option. Rent when you need it so it doesn’t sit in the parking garage collecting fees.
