I have used it by copying a text and asking it to create multiple choice questions. Or tell it to change the reading level. I have had it pull vocabulary words from the text.
I have had it create word problems. I have had it provide a list of children's books on certain topics, and then story stretcher activities. I have even had it help me write a breakout box game!
It has been so awesome. The key to remember is it helps you, like Michelle says, it does the heavy lifting. You still need to fine tune it.

ChatGPT also works somewhat well for writing report comments. You provide it with the info you are looking for and then it will generate a comment about the student, which you can then proofread and tweak.

It's report card time for me. As a kindergarten teacher here in China, giving detailed feedback is more important than a letter grade. So I use ChapGPT to help me with comments...for example: "draft a comment for a cute and curious 3-year old pre-schooler." And then I personlize it for my student. I basically type in their personality and behaviors and it gives me a wealth of details. I can also add "Areas for improvement?" after each and it gives suggestions. Love it!

How is it that you ALWAYS teach me something new? I have been using ChatGPT since March for many things, but I didn’t know you could share the link! Game changer! Also, fun fact, if you say ChatGPT in French it means “Cat I farted” 😂 Haven’t used it for lesson planning yet, but I will definitely try it! Two more ideas: I prompted chatgpt to create a 2, 3, or 4 person skit that taught about weather tools. Then I re-prompted to write one of them to a first grade level for two of my lower readers. I also used chatgpt during our poetry unit becauseI was plumb out of ideas and it created some great rhymes. The haiku were a little off, but the others were great.

Knowing the level of each student helps a lot. I find it very easy to spot who has used AI in their work at primary level. Trust your students but ask them to be honest with themselves and with you. Also, you can teach them what is acceptable when using AI tools and what is not. From my experience it works quite well but it does depend on the group you are teaching.

I do not agree. My students in grade 6 started using chat GPT without me knowing- no way to stop them. I need to know it too to teach the children what’s ok and what’s not when using AI. The same way, I don’t penalize them for finding out information on Google search engine either- it’s how they choose, interpret and present the information that matters and shows me their understanding.
Also, many tasks we use this for are additional to content teaching, for example fun games and activities that help the group/ individuals to simply relax or bond with others. Drafting letters to parents can take ages and exhaust us emotionally, too.
There is no need to reinvent the wheel here so we use the great ideas of others (which AI is summarizing for us) when possible.

A student is expected to prove his or her knowledge in a skill that has been taught to him or her. A teacher does not have the same expectations. Teachers already have proof of their knowledge to do their job: their degree. Also, teachers borrow material all the time, whether it's from textbook companies, fellow teachers, or online resources. It's not the same thing.

Emails are supposed to be short and to the point. Use your own real words, because people do not want to do a lot of fluff reading. Also, my personal feeling is that all letters should be in English, or whatever the national language is. The reason for this is that I lived in a foreign country for twenty years and no one accommodated me in the school system for my children, which helps to learn the national language and preserve it as the national language. It is very hard to accommodate everyone, especially in highly international areas. Coming back to the US, my children's foreign language was never available and it felt s little discriminating that others got so much accommodation and even in class teaching in their foreign language, because it was more well known. Stick with the national language and help immigrants learn that way, and by being non partial to certain better known foreign languages. Just my own experience here.
I feel letters and emails should be short and contain only key information, there might be a place for Chat GPT, but I'm not sure where yet.

Wouldn't you have felt seen and better supported by your children's school if you had received those letters in your own language? I do see your point, though, and perhaps having these correspondences in both the national language and the home language would go a longer way towards helping the families make those language connections. The great news is that with AI, translating is no longer a huge hassle. It just takes seconds for the teacher to do, but it would mean a lot to the families.

@@lancece I don't know, if the teacher wants to that's fine, but it can actually be a lot more work depending on how international the class/school is. In my childrens preschool over twenty languages were spoken in the homes of the children who went there (the language pathologist hired there sent home a survey to parents). Most of the children had a hard time speaking the national language, and many of the teachers were foreign. I think in that situation it's better to focus on everyone learning the national language. When we moved to the US, classes and letters were only in the common languages, no one really wants to put forth the effort to hang five signs on the door, or print off that many letters home. It's usually two languages at most. It's just not realistic and becomes bias to the majority, so why not settle on the official language of the country, and not makes others feel left out?

One of our professional standards is that “Teachers Establish a Respectful Environment for a Diverse Population of Students.” I can’t imagine being any other way toward my students from other countries, cultures, etc. I do what I possibly can to communicate with them and make sure they’re supported.

It is federal law that parents receive important school information in a language they can understand.

@@jillbrennan2553 in the country I lived in, free language classes were provided to immigrants to help them adjust to the national language. Integration help was offered and available, but they did not hang 22 signs on the school door for everyone to understand. I think it is a nice gesture to offer interpretation for individual students families, but there are languages that are neglected and cultures left out. That way... being "inclusive" makes those families feel excluded compared to more common languages and populations.
I'm not talking about just American schools, or how schools are, but how it might best function for a national population. I do feel that the national language should be preserved, and that foreign language families should be treated on a more equal level.
