I love how you give honest advice and share your own experience to help teachers work on TPT. As a teacher who is not going to be selling on the site, I have even more respect for all the hard work that goes into the process. On a side note, I still love the little Office snippets that you sprinkle throughout your videos. Keep up the great work!
Amanda, I look forward to your comments every week! Please know I appreciate you SO much more than you know! 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you so much for your kind words! Don't worry... the Office clips aren't going anywhere any time soon because they make me very happy 😂😂
Thank u for the heads up - I have already created like 4 resources (not uploaded, luckily) and U made me check my school device licence - I'm not allowed to use it for anything commercial
I appreciate this series. Honestly the amount of work that goes into being a seller is astounding and very eye opening. Definitely not something I am interested in pursuing however it gives me a great appreciation for the sellers and also motivation to support my factories. Thanks for all you do as always!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting Joy! 🥰🖤 I'm happy this has been eye opening for you, even if you don't plan on selling at this time. I agree... there is so much more to it than I ever knew before I started!
I am so thankful for your videos. I’ve been teaching for 25 years and it’s good to get excited about my job again. I’m hoping to eventually get something posted on TPT and I am also looking forward to a more organized, productive school year. Thanks 😊
Sis, you are worth your weight in gold!!! I thought all the Google Fonts were free for commercial use. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge. I have added Google Fonts to my bookmarks. You are really a valuable resource as I focus on growing my TPT business. I appreciate your videos soooooo much!
I am dipping my toes in the TPT waters. Last night I put up my free resource (Boho Quotes) and this weekend I am stating to create resources! So exciting! Thank you always sharing what you have learned with us!
Possibly in the future but it's hard because it differs depending on the service you use. Most services have tutorial videos for that on their website! 👍🏼
Regarding commercial licenses and devises. I’d like to add to be careful where you create. Even if you are on break or after school. I would not create anything using district WIFI.
Thank you so much! I have put up 3 sets of Boom cards so far. And, when I search for them with really common keywords for my products, they rank on the first pages already! They weren't at first and I got smarter with the keywords I put into the listing. I had a little party in my head today!
Don't forget that you need to include a physical address for those email lists. Account for that additional cost on top of the cost of the email marketing provider if you want to use a PO box instead of your home address.
Yup! There's a LOT more to all of these than what I covered... these were just short summaries. There are a bunch of other, added costs that I didn't mention.
Absolutely loved this video, especially the parts on licensing and copyright, etc. SN: I was also distracted by the gun show!!!!💪🏾 Would you do a video about how you managed to stay fit and be healthy during the school year???

This is really good info! Taxes are the bear of our existence! You did the smartest thing in finding an accountant who handles the business taxes (they will add up)
I’m new to all this. I’ve developed tons of resources for fellow teachers at my school over the years. After watching this video I’m pretty sure I couldn’t get my stuff ready for TpT! Maybe I’ll revisit the idea but wow- pretty complicated. 🥺
This was helpful. I was considering starting a tpt store, but to be honest, am a little intimidated and I am curious how much I would have to invest financially to do this correctly. I plan to do more research before committing, but at least I know what is required before proceeding. Thank you!
Thank you Michelle. Your videos are always so informative. Can you answer which TAX CODE on TPT we should use when we are posting a new product. I confused between the Digital Images Code or the Other Digital Goods No Physical Media Code. Which one should if I'm creating a Powerpoint Digital Download? Thanks!!!
I have two questions, Michelle: 1- I am creating worksheets about the book Red is Best by Kathy Stinson. Do I have to get her permission to do those activities about her book? 2 - Can I take one of the paragraphs of the book and do an activity? Thanks for your answer in advance.
Thank you for this video! I am a sub and so many times, I get to the classroom and either there is too little prep and I need filler, or in the case of a music class, no sub notes at all.... so I have been making my own. Our admin told me to organize for sale and sell on TPT. I LOVE Powerpoint but hearing that you use google slides, I went looking to see if there is licensing restrictions on powerpoint. I can't figure it out. I know you aren't a lawyer, but would you mind telling me if you found using PP is allowed or if using it violates their copyright protection? Thank you for your help now and all the amazing videos you have created! You are priceless! ~Pam
Here's a question. How can they prove you've used the state-issued computer instead of your personal one. And here's another good question: why the hell wold I need any programme which doesn't allow me to use it for whatever I want to do with it? If you actually adhere to all these rules and purchase all these licenses 1) you'll spend more time dodging all these pitfalls, than actually creating stuff 2) you'll spend more money paying for all this stuff, filling other people's pockets than actually earning money. Last. but not least, don't you see how all of that just stops creativity? How heavily biased it is against the poor people, who cannot afford all that?
If you ever hope to be featured by TpT you must have a credit page that includes all of your images, clip art, fonts, etc. even if what you used is in the public domain. If you use something with a commercial license many, maybe most have Terms of Use (TOU) that need to be followed. I stick to TpT for all my font/clip art needs because sellers are accustomed to easy to understand TOUs and most require credit in your resource. That credit page you create is your protection. Just give credit and move on.
If you make your materials using Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, then you are allowed to use it for commercial purposes. Right? I have reserched the issue and see a range of answers....so confusing.
Hello! Thanks for the video. It is very informative. I am curious how a foreigner should start selling on TPT? And i want to know more on the tax part. Thank you. Waiting for your reply.
Loving this series Michelle!! What incredible value you are providing to the TPT UA-cam community! I wish I had this video when I started my first TPT Store haha but have learnt the hard way with a few things also but now being a couple years into the journey I know way more! All of this was solid advice and is what I’ve come to know too. But seriously what an awesome video and series I think this will help a lot of future TPT sellers in this process 🌺❤️🤓 love it! KEEP up the amazing work 👏🏼
Aww, thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to comment! 🥰🖤 I really appreciate your feedback and I'm so happy to hear that I could help even a little bit!
If you get royalty-free images that allow you to use it commercially, that is your license. You do not need any additional licenses if the creator allows you to use it commercially.
Hi Michelle! Great video, so helpful. Question: starting out, we will just file our sales in our personal return, but how far in did u switch over to an llc? Did u wait until the start of a new calendar year to make it clean? Thanks again for all ur help.
All this information is very useful, but I'm a bit discouraged after I heard about all the copyrights. 😂 It's safer to make my own fonts, pictures, etc...
When starting a TPT product do I have to add my own copyright? Can I add my own copyright to a design/template I created using canva elements? If so, do I have to register my copyright somewhere? Hope these questions make sense. Thanks for all your help and info! You’re the best!
Hi Violeta! Those are great questions. Technically, copyright is not something you have to register for so your work is protected whether you add your "copyright" at the bottom or not. Most authors add it as an extra layer of protection because a lot of TpT products are printed and shared with others so having the seller's name on the page is helpful. As for Canva, it's hard to say exactly because it depends on the template... make sure you read what's allowed or not allowed for each element you use!
If you want to create a resource using a book, such as creating questions about said book, craftivities, is that breaking copyright. Are gifs copyrighted? Can you use images if it says royalty free? Sorry for the list of questions! Thanks for your consideration.
Should any seller be filing taxes? For example, if I earn $2k this year, do I need to file? Maybe it’s different in Canada anyway. But I know becoming a business/sole proprietor is tricky! My mom just went through it for her business and there were some stressful days during tax season!
What about quotes? Is there a maximum number of words that can be quoted from a copyrighted book? I see so many lit studies on TPT, I’m confused how they have/got permission to use cover art and to include major chunks of the texts
I'm from Ireland and currently only making a very small amount on TPT. I'm registered as a sole trader in Ireland so how do taxes work in that case if in a different country?
Hello.....What about Microsoft Office(Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc) and Google Drive(Doc, Slides, etc), I use free version, can I use for commercial use??
When using elements such as clip art you have purchased on TPT that say they are for commercial use, can you use them in your logo creation? And if so, how do you give credit for what you used in your logo? It's not like your logo has a credits page.
I have someone emailed me that my calendar looks like her calendar. Its direcred drawing calendar and font, clipart is different. But layout looks similar because its a calendar.😂 What should i do?
You are awesome by the way. If I use things like Canva and I know there are images that are there, can I use things I create in Canva for TPT as a seller?
So, if I were to write a resource with questions and activities for Little House Books or The Hobbit I would need permission from the author or their representatives as both of the authors of these books have passed on? Thanks for these great sessions about Tpt.
Books are a little more complicated because books are automatically copyrighted since they are an original work but most book titles, characters, etc. are not trademarked (Harry Potter would be an exception to this). Copyright protects the artistic expression of a book, but not necessarily the title. So you can create a product that accompanies a book and reference the title but you can't incorporate parts of the book (pictures of the pages, the cover, etc.). Obviously, this is a very simplified explanation so I recommend doing your own research on the topic!
