It’s a great shame that Stockton has been virtually destroyed over the years, all the proud historic buildings are nearly all gone, the once famous high street is a waste land, and I,m surprised the town hall is still standing . But we have lots of car parking spaces now, all down to stockton borough council.
What we have lost is enough to bring tears to the eyes. We had police dressed as police not combat ready stormtroopers, they even saluted those councillors. All the cars were british made and the roads were not choked with traffic. We had not yet been culturally enriched. The steam train sequences were from the 1970s, loco 2005 is still owned and maintained by the NELPG.
I personally wish Stockton looked like that now, Now its so delapadated and bleak, The Town centres spirti has been destroyed, In a way i think building Wellington Square was a mistake, Theres so many empty shops, even people back then, seemed more friendly, now theres so many unnesacery angry people, I was in an asda yesterday where a bloke was swearing becuase he got told off for skipping a cue. Excellent video.
That bit of grass were the girl was laying is now full of alcoholics and now one goto sit on the benches in there its been like that for many years. Andy England
There's a video from 1989 and the town looked good back then I say it went down when they started messing with the roads where's it character and original shops and places gone too? There also a hell of a lot more on the market
I was born in Stockton and lived there for the first 20 years of my life. I have mixed feelings about how things have changed over the years. The quality of the shops on the high street has decreased significantly. None of the more upmarket retailers seem interested in setting up here, instead we get charity shops, discount stores such as B&M and Cash Generator. The streets are full of lower class scum and I bet you couldn't walk from one end of the town to the other without being approached by a drug addict in a tracksuit asking passers by for "money for their bus fare". And of course the high street pubs aren't doing too great, which is probably due to the fact that any decent human being would avoid them after seeing the drunken, unemployed riff raff hanging about by the doors. However there have been some positives in recent years. If you avoid the high street and know where to look you will find that a decent selection of micro pubs have taken up residence down some of the side streets. Also some recent developments taking place such as the Hilton hotel and the restoration of the The Globe could attract a different class of people to Stockton. So my advice to anyone visiting Stockton would be... do your reaserch first and make sure you know where to avoid and where you can find some of the better restaurants and pubs in the area. Also if you have to walk along the high street try to look up at all times so you can see the historical architecture of the buildings as opposed to the delapidated shop fronts and the angry unemployed locals.
They spent millions ruining it and now they are about to spend millions re-ruining it.

Great memories of how it all looked before the council messed it all up!
Very interesting and nice to hear the late Ali Brownlee in the background on century radio way back
It would be nice to have someone talk about what we are seeing. Thanks for this footage 👍💕
i love how clean everything looks! great footage!
I'm 38 but it's quite disheartening the way the council really did f**** our town up :(
My town ruined by planners and immigration ☹️
Five bent Cookes came into town then all the Historic buildings came tumbling down.
Stockton Town Council should stand trial for what they have do to this town since the 1970,s
Never a truer word said it brings tears to my eyes thinking of the good times
