Note: although the Atari ST version may look a little janky today, I can assure you that when it came out it blew people away. Its creators were proudly bringing it around to show at exhibitions and all the computer magazines went bonkers over it. For the time, it was very impressive.

The reason why the X68000 ports were often arcade-perfect was due to the fact that a lot of Japanese companies at the time used the X68K to programme their games in the first place! Meaning it was indeed the closest that most people could get to an arcade experience at home.

I rarely subscribe to new channels now. Jamie channel got me to subscribe. Great high quality regularly uploaded new videos on this channel. A real treat compared with many others regurgitated the same type of retro content. Love seeing all these different ports compared against each other. I like seeing how the cpc stacks up because of the vivid colour palette and not being familiar with that system.

Nostalgia prevails as always regarding my memories of the C64 version. Playing it in my friends house, then buying it myself as part of the Hit Squad budget series. The graphics and flow of racing action is shocking and shoddy, and it isnt fun to play. But! Man, that soundtrack. I love all of the tunes on offer to select to 'race' to. Those tunes still hold up, and the memories Ive got revolve around the ingame music. In the Megadrive years, I rented out this many o'time and thought it was great. I remember buying a second hand copy of it in a video store when I was 14. Loving these videos!

I had the Genesis/Mega Drive version, and the Gameboy Advance collection. I agree with your assessment here.
The Sega 16 bit console version was very good at the time, with the console making the most with what it had.
the X68000 as others mentioned was often used as the dev kit for many a 16 bit arcade game.
And the Gameboy Advance version just nails it. And portable to boot.

I personally had the Amiga A500 version and was pretty happy with it but the Amiga had so many amazing racing games that were better, in my opinion, so I don't remember playing it that much. Your ranking order is just fine; it's not an official vanilla port but my favorite way to play this game is the Mega Drive MSU version using the arcade arrange soundtrack. Once you experience the game while listening to an amazing melodic guitar-driven hard rock rendition of Hard Road (From the anniversary album) it just doesn't get better than that. Also the Mega Drive has the more robust career mode to add some value to the package.

I played the Amiga version. I used to be able to complete the Beginner track, but could never master any of the others. One thing that really used to piss me off is that the Amiga version (and to a lesser extent, the ST version) is the only one where the other bikes intentionally try to hit you. Watch the arcade footage, all the other bikes are going straight on straightaways, and turning properly on curves. Now look at the Amiga footage, the other bikes are always coming across the track toward you. Going into curves, they will often zip across to the outside edge where you are, hit you, then instantly zip back to the other side.

The Amiga version is one of my favorite Amiga games, mostly because of the mouse control for steering. I just like that so much more than trying to control it with a stick/pad. I just really like that control method.
That's why I prefer the Amiga version to the Genesis (Megadrive) version (which is very good).

  • @jimkrom
    @jimkrom 14 днів тому +2

Well with C64 racing games you had two options. Either make the road follow the geometry of the vehicle which stayed in the middle of the screen, and have really bad framerates, or have the road sticck edge to edge to the sides of the screen and mostly move the vehicle left and right towards said edges, which gave better frame rates, but gave a feeling of playing that 80s tabletop racing game called "Tomy Turnin’ Turbo Dashboard". Both cases resulted in most C64 racers being crap (yeah even the precious outrun conversion).

For a company with suck a decent track record as Electric Dreams to handle Hang on in the way they did was a huge let down. The C64 version was a disgrace and while the Amstrad version is a reasonable enough Spectrum port doing a port rather than it's own version was sheer laziness

Btw, going back to Super Hang On, my first original experience of it was actually on the abysmal C64 version, which I’m not sure if you know but I think it was never officially released !! I was only able to get it because my mum knew a lady who was doing those old Freemans catalogue which had it in there so we ordered it and it actually arrived !! I presume some companies did get their hands on it before Electric Dreams withdrew it !! 😬 truly awful version vs how it should of been done with Super Cycle which was fantastic.

The GBA port was arguably the best done port on that 4-in-1 cart (After Burner was too slow and lacked the intensity, Space Harrier was better but still felt slower when compared to the arcade original, and Outrun was basically tied with Super Hang-On in terms of capturing the arcade gameplay and sense of speed). But for me, the Genesis port had a leg up thanks to the career mode it came with. That gave the game a longevity that the other ports lacked.

I think the arcade used 16 bit math.
It did use 3x 68000 cpu's vs home machines having only 1 68k cpu, if they were lucky. Then also custom scaling silicon too, if I remember correctly.
This would have been exorbitantly expensive in 1987.

Sorry to be "that guy" but you are comparing ports of this game and others using mostly, if not wholly, emulation? Which is OK but maybe that needs to be clarified, as framerate drops and suchlike can very often be due to issues with the emulation. Although if you own a Sharp 68000 set up I am jealous 🙂Also the max speed in the DOS version is 320kph, having done a quick search in UA-cam. Not sure if that's with the boost though, which I seem to remember being a feature of the game.

The c64 version was sodding terrible… hated having it and actually recorded over the tape with a dj set 30 minute minimix which used to be on radio 1

Yup. An absolute stinker right next to Chase HQ.

a vastly superior use of that tape lol

Absolutely. Jason Donovan would have been better recorded over it than the game. A complete waste of reel.

Ugh! When this video started I realise I've never seen, or at least played, the C64 version. Looks like a down graded enduro racer.
I believe there is a good mega drive to hack with 60fps and better sized sprites

You know there's a turbo button right?
I loved this on the amiga. But you do have to master the turbo to do well

Just judging the sharps version on graphics alone at least I’m sorry but it doesn’t have the killer super hang on look. The gameboy, megadrive and even Amiga has it, but the sharp, being shallow and on looks alone, no way jose.

The Amstrad version is clearly another crappy Speccy port. Sprites converted to mono - and even worse: they kept the sprite "design" that the upper part of the sprites has a different colour. Sure, that avoids colour clash on a Speccy but completely unnecessary on the Amstrad. With a few days more of development It could have been at least a decent 4 colour game.

Out of interest. Did you leave out the master system version for any particular reason?

Yes. Because this is the sequel.

Jesus that C64 version is awful to look at, what the hell were they thinking??? 🤨. I had the speccy version and always highly rated it

    • @JustJamie1983

Yup. Definitely a good port for speccy.

hard to imagine a game that released in the arcades in 1987 that it took over 15 years for a near perfect translation of the arcade. 3 decades for a review to determine port hierarchy....priceless.

had this on the speccy, it was a belter.... never finished it, found it too hard, don't think i had it on the ST but i do remember the arcade with the bike, was fkkn very hard.
    Boss list as always mate.
PS: Didn't know the amstrad was a speccy port, but it definitly is... weird.
Also the master system version iirc was actually alright.
