It's still hard to believe that she, too, has left us, to go exploring beyond the Rim. We live for the One, we die for the One. Entil'zha veni, in Valen's name.
Same. I came here to listen to it again after reading her tweet. I think it's probably a product of being a Sci fi star that you have a somewhat deeper understanding and acceptance of your mortality. I know for me, the "we are star stuff" speech has stayed with me since I first heard it, and I hope it brings comfort to Mira's family, as it did to her.
"We are star stuff." Has been a family favorite quote of the show, and I was actually watching it when I read of her passing. She will be missed. We'll see you beyond the Rim, say hi to everyone else for us - rest well.
I believe it was Carl Sagan who made the statement "we are made of star stuff", before it was used in this show. Regardless, it was a great delivery by Deleen.
This is eerie. For some days I had the nagging urge to rewatch B5 after several years. Now I know why. Rest in eternity Mira "Delenn" Furlan. She joined Andreas Katsulas, Richard Biggs, Michael O'Hare, Stephen Furst, Jerry Doyle and Jeff Conaway in their journey beyond the Rim.
I just watched this episode for the first time this afternoon. The quote Delenn says is extremely powerful, she's quickly becoming one of my favorite characters on the show.
"Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. We long to return. And we can. Because the cosmos is also within us. We're made of star-stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself." -Carl Sagan.
mine too where i live here in the UK at that time i was working at what used to be the food court at the glades shopping center in bromley and i was at a point of not knowing what i wanted to do with my life but then channel 4 was beginning to air season 2 of B5 it was a episode called "A Distant Star " and there was a scene between Sheridan and delenn its what she said her wisdom helped me realise that where i was was the right place for me
We've heard before that we are star stuff - from people like Carl Sagan and Lawrence Krauss - but only here can we get it from someone with the elegant beauty of Mira Furlan as Delenn. Thank you, Mira.
My favorite line of hers is the last line of this scene. I am heartbroken today. Too soon. So much too soon. Mira, thank you for helping us all figure out the universe just a little bit better. You have now joined the stars...
Sometimes I think "it's just a tv show," but in reality, the best sort of shows that want to be philosophical are reflections of our beliefs. That is why I like this show so much. It really gets down deep to explore themes such as Imperialism, Racism, the cycle of revenge, fundamentalism where you care more about being right than teaching a meaningful lesson, and even themes such as letting the Government/one man gain so much power over your lives in the name of "security." It also was great in that it treated one's personal beliefs with respect. I am a Christian so I am naturally a fan of the way Christian's were portrayed as intelligent, loving and thinking individuals, but it goes beyond that. It fairly treats other's beliefs as rational things, such as the episode where Sinclair is supposed to showcase Earth's dominant religion, but, since there are so many, he instead gathers representatives of every religion to be introduced. The series never went all out with "this is the one true path, follow it or else." Instead it acknowledged that religion and simple faith is an integral part of humanity, and to ignore it or trivialize it is severely misrepresenting the whole. Again, not simply Christianity, but all faiths. I hope people understand that I am not trying to force my beliefs on anyone, I simply am a Christian who happens to really like Babylon 5 for it's deep themes. I hope this makes some people think before they give me a demeaning label like "sheep" again. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my little thought-fest. :)
In the episode where an alien family refuses medical treatment for their child as it goes against their religion. I think really demonstrated how masterfully B5 took on such a controversial topic. They showed how the doctors motivation came from his believes, and his morals. As the parents motives also came from their believes, and their morals. There was no black and white. You could understand the argument from both view points. This issue is recently getting a lot of press again, and I feel like I have a lot more wisdom on the subject thanks to how well it was presented by the show.
One of the best scenes in the entire series. As someone already pointed out, much of this was borrowed from Carl Sagan's 1980 "Cosmos" series. Ann Druyan (Sagan's widow) and Neil deGrass Tyson produced a follow-up series to Cosmos in which this concept is brought up once more. To me, the concept has always been an evident truth ever since I had even the vaguest understanding of what the universe consisted of.
There is great wisdom here: The reason for our place in the universe, faith, and the quote: "Then I will tell you a great secret, Captain. Perhaps the greatest of all time. The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make up this station, and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are starstuff. We are the universe made manifest, trying to figure itself out. And as we have both learned, sometimes the universe requires a change of perspective."
I don't know why people keep making this issue more complex than it is. Delenn's point was that sentient and sapient beings don't just exist "within" the universe, but are wholly a part of the universe as they are made of the same matter, governed by the same physical laws. We are quite literally the universe observing itself.
Me definitely not. Watching this show right now, and all of season 1 - Delenn was all about Sinclair. Now season 2 starts, and not only is Sinclair out of nowhere replaced by this Sheridan guy but also Delenn is out of nowhere all about Sheridan? Like all her interest that she had about Sinclair now suddenly this random dude has? It doesn't feel natural even a little bit.
@@edmis90 Assuming that you are watching B5 for the first time, it's worth checking out the backstory behind this. I do agree that the beginning of season 2 feels a little "out of nowhere", but that's because the changes were not planned. (Let me assure you that it gets much better very quickly!) The reason Sinclair disappeared so abruptly is because Michael O'Hare had to leave the show due to increasing struggles with mental illness and needing time off for treatment - this was kept secret at the time and only revealed after his death. JMS offered to halt production entirely so he could continue later, but O'Hare did not want to endanger everyone else's jobs, so he left after the first season and his character was replaced with Sheridan. Considering these circumstances, I think they did a marvelous job of keeping the story as consistent as possible, but of course it shows a little in early season 2. Keep watching, I was sceptical at first too (only found B5 myself last year) but by the end of the season I was totally sold on the couple!
Did not. I was watching these clips and thought Neil DeGrase Tyson had copied Delenn. But it's actually that they're both following Sagan's turn of phrase. Ty for the info.
Every day I thank the Universe for giving me the opportunity to grow up in the 80-90s. I had Babylon 5 wisdom and did not have to listen to Justin Bieber.
"It was ahead of it's time" is a cliche. But maybe it should have come out and finished before 2015, when things started to go far-right fascist around the world?
"We've lived too long, seen too much. To live on, as we have, is to leave behind joy, love, and companionship because we know it to be transitory; of the moment. We know it will turn to ash. Only those whose lives are brief can believe that love, is eternal. You should embrace that remarkable illusion. It may be the greatest gift your race has ever received." - Lorien
Ok so i seen B5 start to end like 3 times now but i only just caught on to 0:27. Could that be a subtle reference to the Black Star?? How many other Earth Force personnel serving in the war at that time would have made the potentially suicide call that Sheridan did, same type of call he makes later against the Shadows. Curious!
Помню, как меня зацепил этот момент...сейчас понимаю-это в принципе мой взгляд на жизнь, за исключением лишь того, что я не только боль, но и прекрасные чувства организма ценю-они, как ни странно, тоже меняют нас)
The widom portrayed in this franchise it's a shame that same wisdom can't be used in real life. We know the answers but our leaders don't seem to head the advice of wisdom but get hung up in the struggle and greed of individual power and money.
Babylon 5 kind of grows on you. I missed most of it in its first run. I binge watched the series, start to finish, when it was offered as a free promo on one of the streaming services a few years ago. I never did subscribe. I remember the Carl Sagan paraphrase. It seemed cool at the time, but with all we've learned about quantum physics, the nature of matter and energy since then, it's kind of trite now. We haven't got a clue as to what we're made of.
John Burroughs (A Terran) wrote, “Look underfoot. You are always nearer to the true sources of your power than you think. The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive. The great opportunity is where you are. Don't despise your own place and hour. Every place is the center of the world.”
Yes, as 6.02 x 10^23 commenters have said, the idea of "star stuff" was originally Carl Sagan's line, and later used by Neil deGrasse Tyson. The genius of JMS and Babylon 5 is in believing that there is something or someone (even in the earth year 2258!) that still found Sagan/NdGT's thoughts worthy of sharing.
The "STAR STUFF" quote was originally stated by Carl Sagan, and again repeated by Neil Degrass Tyson. So it has a history of great thinkers embracing it. However the part about us being ers universe manifest pure genius, and i believe original.
1:40 I wonder if Neil Degrase Tyson was quoting Delenn during Cosmos when he says "We are star stuff." edit: Was reading someone elses comment. Apparently it was originally from Carl Sagan, and both Tyson and B5 are copying his turn of phrase.
@LordGodsServant The mystery will never be solved, for truth is ongoing and always continuing. The process of life is the continual process of coming into greater and greater union with God. In that way, our lives are a constant source of continuing revelation. We will never know all the answers, we will never fully understand, and yet we continue to seek truth and understanding in this universe. Appreciate that mystery for that is what pushes us forward and helps us grow.
If made five or ten years later than it was, no longer hampered by the 4:3 mess that's forever marred the first four seasons, they might have also been able to do a much better job with altering Furlan's voice for the original intent with Delenn. And her discussion about having to deal with transitions would've been far more potent. Oh well.
'sigh' I wonder why my comment received so many negative votes. Why is it so wrong for me to state my belief? I also think that this series was very fair when it came to its portrayal of not just Christianity, but the concept of religion as a whole. It did not brush it aside, nor did it condone crimes born of radicals who use religion as their shield. Instead it acknowledged that our hope in something greater will always be a part of our lives, that we will always hope for a greater purpose.
She may have mentioned it, but this is probably her typical Minbari beliefs. He was looking for more. Not just saying star stuff and we are the universe made manifest. If she did say this same thing, he may have wanted to make sure she truly understood it at its core, and not just regurgitate what she heard. There is a difference between understanding what you learn and just memorize it. "One life or a billion, they're all the same." Then there is the fact he had to make sure the motives weren't about seeking acclaim, acceptance, or attention.
Well in the show, its actually diferentiated. The Minbari do not believe in gods or a god. They believe that the universe is alive in some way we cant know but it lacks the tools it needs to "understand". Their belief is that we (life) are those tools. That we are the product of the universe itself. We are made of star stuff after all. It is a origin belief and one I rather like.
In a way this is true but the mystery has already been solved. Many people search for the truth all their lives and may never find it. They may have blinded themselves or look in the wrong places to find God. God made the universe, then made us, to cultivate and inhabit it. But we rebelled and were made to live as we are now. But God took pity on us and sent his son to pay the price for our sins, death. Nowadays, people try and find satisfaction in other things, but only God will satisfy.
Well that's not necessarily correct, and furthermore if people are sentient/sapient and they are part of the universe, then that part of the universe can then observe the rest. QED.
what she is saying is actually part of new age religion... people should not believe such man made up stuff. I used to like some sci-fi series and movies but most sci-fi series and movies unfortunately adopt new age religion concepts or false doctrines. The truth is the word of God. Anyone wanting to know the truth should read the Bible and pray to God for guidance.
And now today she returns to the stars. RIP Mira/Delenn. :(

BlueEyesDudeDragon31 I think you misunderstood I was just giving an example of B5 handling a controversial issue, I didn't say it was in this episode.

this concept is in HIndu and Buddhist literature. Carl Sagan got it from those sources. it's old stuff.

Mira Furlan (Delenn) is a memorizing and captivating actress. Babylon 5 has the best dialogue even in 2016. Lol.
