William, your prophetic words have manifested themselves over and over again in my life. As I sit here watching your video, I have two (count them . . . TWO!) band-aides on my hands. I just can't stop playing with my knives. Arrrggghh! :-(
Thank you so much for the honest review. It helped me immensely. The most important thing to me in my pack is shelter because in my area in three hours without shelter, I could be dead. NO other item has that importance. So it gets top percentage of weight and quality in my pack. I'm always looking for the best ideas on any aspect of shelter. And by the way - I loved your intro! This was my first video of yours and I'm a subscriber - 8-) All the best to you and yours.
I love the intro! it's a keeper, that was a very good and informative video on tarps! I appreciated it, it was surprising to me that the canvas weighed more than the oil skin! Thanks for posting!
Not only the weight but I was surprised at how much smaller it packs down to. A very fine product. You're very welcome and thanks for the view and comment.
Good video. I have been using a silnylon tarp which is great for warm weather camping when you don't need a fire to stay warm but like you said its no good by a fire. I am in the process now of attempting to make a oilskin tarp out of a king size cotton sheet if it works out (currently waiting on the boiled linseed oil to dry right now) I will have spent about $20 dollars on it(I stole one of the wife's sheets so I did not have to buy that or it would have been a few dollars more). By the way I heard about your channel from Justin at the Grierwolfe channel I like what I see so I gave you sub. Jason
Great info William! I have a bunch of light weight tarps. I would love to go to an oilskin. Maybe someday ill have the loot saved up. Lots of good info and opinions. The opening is great! You have been busy filming. I cant wait to get caught up! Take care -Chris
As I said in the video, if you can afford one and use a tarp enough to justify the purchase then it is a wonderful piece of kit. Thanks for the view and comment my friend.
“The Tentsmith handles the wind great”....Didn’t think of that, thanks for the review! Would be great for my canoe trips cuz the extra weight really would not matter.
A lot of UA-cam videos go way overboard on the intro. I just skip them and get to the meat. An intro only needs to be 15-20 seconds. More than that gets tedious. My two bits.........
Great intro. I have killed a sil ny tarp over the course of one year . I like the oil cloth for its relative low weight and compactness . Thanks for sharing .
Hey Man, I just found your channel and Sub'ed too. I live in the East Tejas area myself. Over around the DCNP to be honest. I'm gonna try to catch up on all your video's. I'm look'n for durable and sorta light tarp myself.
I have used this methods for many decades, 32yr vet from N-MN, can't get around very well anymore, going to try deer hunting next week, I have seen issues as it's said?! I am giving away most my stuff to family and friends, I could never afford CHEAP?! And most people appreciate the sentiment though only rule is never sell only give it to someone deserving?! I like you style, I'm a new sub!
I have been wondering what canvas to get and you made up my mind. I live close enough to tentsmiths I can drive up and get one. (60) miles). I currently own a 7x7x7 wedge tent made by them. Great quality stuff I recommend anything they make. I am thinking of getting one of their Baker type tents.
Nice review of tarps, thanks for sharing it. I'm leaning toward an oilcloth tarp and I really like the Deer Creek, but they only show dark blue on their website currently.
+Prepared Suburbanite Happy to have helped. I have been using Deer Creek Wilderness Outfitters ultra-lite oil skin tarp for several months now and must say it is the best. Check them out before you buy. deercreekwildernessoutfitters.com/shop/#!/Tarps/c/18049867/offset=0&sort=normal
I agree and take my oil cloth most of the time! I'd be careful around an open fire. The oilcloth will burn easily while canvas can be treated with flame retardant like the open whelan tents. Nice comparison!
Great intro!! I thought oil cloth was a light weight treated canvas?? I saw David Canterbury demo it on one of his video's and no question it was impressive. So now we have a 2nd thumbs up from you so it must be good. All good info thanks!!
It is a material all of itself. It is the same material as the outback oilskin dusters if you had the chance to see one. Appreciate the view and comment.
Subed iv seen just a few of your vids but will be watching the rest , full of good info and taught me a few things im going to try Thanks keep up the good work
Just a low budget option, I have my own stuff to include winter tents out of house wrap 9'x100' about 90$, combined with adhisive glue, duck tape, Velcro too to swap panels till you come up with what works for you! TS will make custom sixes too, top quality though, remember when storing canvas you must hang to thoroughly dry otherwise it will rot!
I'm in southeast Texas myself! Lumberton Texas. Probably anout to order the 9x9 from tentsmiths . I originally wanted the 7x7 for weight but the 9x9 is only 5 pounds it's not that heavy.
@@wcknives here in southeast Texas I'm not a fan of ground sleeping unless in a tent. There no worst feeling in the world than waking up to feel the weight of a copperhead coiled up near your crotch to stay warm. However the hammock and tarp setups are doable.
like the intro. btw ive been watching all ur vids but i couldnt comment or like them for some reason til now. ya here in TX weight can be an issue to me since its so hot like u said so i can see that oilskin workin for me too
Google is strange. I tried to respond to someones comment the other day and had to respond to them in a PM. Like the oil skin better every time I use it. Best $200.00 I've spent in a long time. Thanks Brandon for the view and comment my friend.
Thanks for the comparisons William. I will be upgrading my tarp in the future so this has been great info! P.S. The new intro is fantastic! Peace, Shane
I have never seen canvas that is the same weight as tent smiths oil cloth. Oil is the waterproofing the weight comes from the material the waterproofing is used on. Maybe that is where the confusion comes from. Appreciate your view.
Thank you for the tarp review. I've been looking for this! After seeing your review, I'm strongly considering splurging for the oil cloth now. Sounds really nice! Regarding the intro, I think it is great content but way too long. :-) 10 - 15 seconds is maximum but yours goes on for 40 seconds. Cut it to a third or a half, at least and you'll be good. Just pick out the top 3-5 scenes and use only those.
alfrad odin brands are probably no longer available. This is a very old video. But the materials are try doing a google search for the trap material you want.
+Life & Times of JCM Price depends on size. Check out the Deer Creek Outfitters..In my military days I was a parachute rigger, and I certainly can recognize quality construction ! It is certainly much better than the Tentsmith's. I have their 8' x 8". Lee, Indianapolis
Too bad Deer Creek stopped selling tarps. I have an 8X8 Deer Creek tarp and love it. Tentsmith needed a competitor and Deer Creek was a great competitive option. They were also nice guys to deal with. I find the Tentsmith customer relations suck at best. I guess that is what you get when your the only one around. It is MY opinion that Tentsmith treats the youtube movie stars a little nicer than us regular folks who just use the product instead of advertising the product.
Yep, not the best choice for weight but for the long term user and near fire oil cloth and canvas is the better choice. As with most things gear depends on intended use.
Yup, I've been back and forth with which tarp and this has helped me figure out what I want. Thanks

I agree with your opinion on the different tarps. I prefer a tarp that I can use year round with or without a fire. Thanks for sharing.

You're very welcome! Appreciate your support.
Love the oil cloth
Tent smiths are retiring, new owners are taking over in August. I hope to get a 10x10
...I love my Tentsmith tarp!
Nice and professional intro...

Thanks for posting. I use a tent.
Appreciate your view.
I like your new intro

Anyone know why some sites say canvas can end up being the same size and weight as oilcloth? Are there lighter canvas'? That oilcloth looks great.

Aubrey make one instead
The blue tarp works for me.
why didnt you go with a 9x9, i cant decide on a 8x8 or 9x9. im 5'8" I think a 8' would work for me
I am 6' so the 9 X 9 fits me better and it also fits over my hammock better. Appreciate the view and comment.
very smooth intro
have a good 2016
+Tim Leaning Thanks and you too.
I wish someone would compare oilcloth to waxed canvas.
Oil cloth is a very thin cloth material where canvas is just that a heavy canvas material. That is the difference. Oil cloth is much lighter.
great intro will

The Multicam© models are fire retardant, and IR compliant.
They have 16 perimeter tie outs and several along the center seam for Ridgeline.
