One thing that's actually amazing about the game, is its soundtrack. Its OST was so good that its composer Jun Senoue, was even like, "This music is too good to be wasted on Sonic 3D Blast" and then re-used some of the songs for the first Sonic Adventure game.
Huh, didn't know that. What songs in particular were reused?

@@jedimasterpickle3 Green Grove was reused for the second half of Windy Valley, and one of the other tracks was reused for Twinkle Park.
To be fair, it was less "this music is too good to be wasted on 3D Blast" and more "Japan has never heard this music before so they won't notice if I just reuse them". Japan wouldn't get 3D Blast until a year after Adventure came out and even then it was only the Saturn version with its completely different soundtrack. Mega Collection was their first exposure the Genesis version.

Fun fact: The opening cut scene takes up the majority of the game cart's memory. I think it's like... 4 times bigger than the whole game? It's crazy. Furthermore, to circumvent debuging testing, if you ever encounter an error in the game, it's programmed to take you to a stage select menu, making it appear as if you had accidentally found a secret! You can trigger that menu by just jostling the cart in the Genesis itself. And if you want an earlier exemple of Isometric 3D-like games, I highly recommend Rare's 'Snake Rattle & Roll' on the NES!
There is a legit code for the level select: B, A, Right, A, C, Up, Down, A on the title screen, then start a new game. It's certainly better for the long-term health of your cartridge and console than applying physical force.

Sonic 3D Blast is kind of like putting wings on your Dog and calling it a bird: it obviously isn't a bird but it's still pretty good at being a Dog, and it looks really cute. It's a terrible attempt at actually being a bird, but it's a hell of a lot less painful than Frankenbird.

Thinking about how Crash Bandicoot used corridors and camera angles makes me realize just how much of the real thing Mario 64 was. It was a 3D game where you'd be in a field and could move the camera anywhere, up, down, forward, wherever. Kind of the first legit 3D game
And it was fucking awful

I personally enjoy it, but it wasn't very good objectively, or at least it's not considered to be.

@@duncancowan4944 I don't think it's fair to compare a launch N64 game with a PC game of the same era on a technical level, especially frame rates. You'll always get more frames with faster hardware.
Mario 64 isn't even that impressive by N64 standards, as most launch titles are. What it excels in is design. It essentially pioneered modern third person camera movement, and had verticality in levels that was rarely seen before. Crash Bandicoot levels all feel very flat, whereas in Mario you can climb mountains. It is simply a new experience that couldn't have been replicated before, unlike most 3D games at the time.
As great as Quake is, it is simply an evolution of Wolfenstein and Doom. The camera is also the same as before, but now with vertical movement as well. It isn't a leap in design that says "this experience needs 3D!", just like how Crash Bandicoot is the natural evolution of 2D Super Mario games into 3D. Perhaps Donkey Kong Country would be a more accurate comparison though, given that they were more like collectathons than Mario and the crate collecting in Crash.

Honestly though? I think I prefer Crash, at least for going back to. Mario 64 was a watershed moment in gaming for sure, but the weird 2½-D format of the first three Crash games is something you don't get anymore (with the obvious exception of the game that was explicitly made as a sequel to the first three Crash games.) It's a novel format in this day and age, whereas there are dozens of full 3D platformers and shooters.
I love how Scott manages to go from “yeah it’s boring, frustrating, and hard to look at” to “it has its flaws but it’s not terrible”

if you liked Sonic 3D Blast, you should check out Kirby's Dream Course, it has similar aesthetics but totally different, more puzzle oriented gameplay

The developers at Traveler's Tales in the 90s are an interesting bunch. They made some very impressive software with amazingly creative use of each platforms' hardware to pull off things that shouldn't have been possible for games that no one cared about. They knew how to program games really well, but actually designing fun and interesting gameplay seemed to be a challenge. As a programmer myself I know the struggle, it takes a very different mindset to design games rather than just coding them. It probably didn't help that they almost never had much time or budget to polish their games as they were just cranking them out within a matter of months most of the time.

The more I look back into the development history behind this franchise, the more I wonder how they managed to make the classic games as solid as they did.

@@thomasstone3480 This game is a good example of how, even if the final product isn't technically GOOD, the audience can tell, if I might say, when you put your whole ass into a work. Sonic 3D Blast, especially on Genesis, sure as shit didn't slack on anything. It was a genuine technical achievement that, yeah, kinda sucks, but the audience, in time, catches on to the heart that went into a given work. That's why games like Sonic 3D Blast are fondly remembered and the latest installments of Call of Medal of Duty and Honor XXXI aren't.

I played this game on genesis as a kid and honestly loved it. If you would have asked me back then I would have said its 10/10. Looking back now, I tend to agree with Scott's analysis. But when I revisit it, part of me is still that little kid just happy to be exploring a sonic world. Helps that the OST is filled to the brim with bangers.

I decided to complete Sonic 3D Blast earlier this year. I actually ended up enjoying it way more than I thought I would. Some of it was frustrating but once learning how things worked the gameplay became way more enjoyable. I also really do love the music in this game.

I remember one winter, I got sick. My mom asked me what I want to make me better, and I said "A new Sonic Game". She brought me 3D blast, which for some reason kept crashing on my Genesis. But you know what did not crash? The sound test. I love this game's OST, and I love that Sega still honor it, as we've seen this music get rearranged many times over the years. I finally played 3D Blast on the Mega Collection, and I really liked it. Sure, it's no S3&K, but as far as Sonic spin-offs go, it's a solid one.

I remember having my pre teen mind blown when I first played this game. I mean the novelty definitely wore off by like the second zone but having not played any true 3D games at that time it was genuinely impressive. I also remember it being a two and a half trawl to complete with no save function which was kindof weird considering sonic 3 had a save system and this was in my mind at least the next evolution of Sonic games.
The bgm for Volcano Valley is still one of my favourite tunes to date. Gives me goosebumps. Panic Puppet is almost as good.

The whole concept of collecting Flickies and losing them when you get hit and taking them to the goal in each level is the same as the original arcade/Genesis game "Flicky" made by Sega back in the 80s. That's also why they appear in Sonic games when you destroy enemies. They're even in Sonic Adventure.

I actually really like this game, admittedly, and somehow that’s grown for me over the years. It feels like a sort of intermingling of a ‘Sonic game’ and a isometric platformer rather than one being the other, and since both appeal to me independently, I think that’s why I enjoy it. But I definitely think it’s influenced by nostalgia too! Those soundtracks for both the Genesis and Saturn respectively are very much favorites. Great video, Scott :)
I loved Sonic 3D Blast back in the day and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

I'm crying right now, my late brother used to play this game when we were young. I just remember he used to play some old 3D sonic game.
We're so lucky to get so much Scott the Woz at the end of this year. All though I am happy that his content is on other platforms, it was quite sparse in the beginning of the year. Have a great 2023 Scott the Woz.
If anything needs to be said about this game, it's that you've done yourself a disservice if you've even remotely touched the Genesis version. The Saturn version is the way to go, but even then you could do much better.

I had this on PC as a kid. Banging soundtrack, for sure. I'm pretty sure I still have the CD on a spindle somewhere, but if it's not eaten up with CD rot it probably wouldn't even run with whatever ancient graphics libraries it used back then.
It’d be great if there was a sort of directors cut of the Saturn version. I think it’s a neat enough game that if it had the strengths of both the Saturn and Director’s cut versions then it’d be something that I could recommend more people check out. I mean the special stages on Saturn are some of the best in the series, and that counts for something. Also Jon Burton’s work on his UA-cam channel GameHut is really cool, he did a video talking about how the intro for the Genesis version works. Great watch if you’re interested in that.

The developer Jon Burton has a channel (shown at 20:06) where he shows the making of the games he worked on. For example, he explained how it's possible for that intro cutscene to work so well on a 4 MB Sega Genesis cartridge.

this man should be given an award. I mean 20-30 minute videos with great comedy every week or two. and if he's gone for a month he's either taking a well-deserved break or making a movie-length piece of content. he is one of the greatest UA-camrs ever. (In my opinion)

I had a Saturn and literally just heard of it for the first time. Have to look into it.
3D Sonic on 16bit was Sonic CD for me, and Sonic on Saturn was Sonic R (which I liked, but it didn't age well).
I know right? XD I always heard that it was "exactly the same as the Genesis" but I knew that wasn't true because I played both and was so disappointed when I didn't hear the familiar Saturn ost when I played the Steam port. I understand the core game is the same and all, but those differences make a big difference in my eyes (or should I say ears?) but not even that, I now just realized even the textures used were a lot more polished in Saturn, the bonus stages were different, and the controls were improved. Also I will say: I am not bashing the Genesis version, I just feel sad that I don't have access to playing the version I played as a child easily accessible anymore.
