A small tip for using the horse hair braid on circle skirts, is to tighten the braid on the top edge. You can pull on the top most plastic thread of the braid, and tack it into place, which will give it a concave shape to follow the hem line of the skirt. Circle skirts are smaller at the waist, so with non stiff fabric, you see the braid jut out a bit on the outside, because the braid is all one size, versus the skirt getting smaller the farther up it is. You notice this less with stiffer fabrics, but since knits drape well and have a lot of movement, the braid sticks out a bit, But this is a great idea, never really thought to use it on the sailor scout skirts, but it looks great!

I'm gonna make my dog into the cutest Sailor Saturn ever 😩🤣 I bought a Sailor Pluto costume and I really hope it fits. I usually make plushies so this will be a challenge since I do everything by hand!

One gathering technique that I've found works great is taking some strong/thick thread (or I've heard dental floss works great too) and zigzag stitch over it without sewing through it, so you can easily pull the thread through the zigzags. It not as easy as just doing a basting stitch and harder to unpick if you don't hide it, but it's much easier to gather and less likely to break.

Ohhhh that's a good technique!! I'll have to try that next time I have to gather something

Is it possible you can explain the part where you sew the 3 pieces together? I'm new at this and it's not clicking with my brain as to why I would need that much

Absolutely! The reason I used so much fabric is to give the skirt a ton of volume. You could do it with just one circle skirt, but you wouldn't get the same thick horsehair pleats that you get when you use more fabric.

Wow! I love the way this skirt moves. It's seriously amazing!
My girlfriend and I are thinking about Cosplaying Sailor Scouts, but neither of us have very much experience sewing. Would you say this project is at all beginner friendly? It's a million times cuter than any costume online.

I think it’s pretty beginner friendly! The most advanced part is making the pattern for the bodysuit, but if you have trouble making your own patterns, McCalls and Simplicity have Sailor Scout patterns. It’s always good to practice and learn new skills, so take a shot at making them! I bet they’ll turn out so cute 😍

Haha, I'm sure that the bodysuit will be hard, especially because I'm a 6'6" guy who doesn't have a one-piece swimsuit to make a pattern off of. I don't think I could even find one, haha.
In other news, I'm based out of Utah too, so maybe I'll see you at the next SLCC! My girlfriend isn't super into Cosplay (yet), but I might try and convince her to go. So if you see a giant guy dressed as a Sailor Scout similar to your design, it's probably me!

Amazing! Did you stitch the hip rolls to a waistband? I think I might have missed this part 😅
