This has been extremely helpful. I have genu valgum and was hoping to understand what type of shoes would be better for me. Any chance that you plan to make an extension of this video explaining valgum structure? Also, what type of shoes you would recommend for someone with Valgus? Currently, I’m wearing New Balance 1080
I’m so glad! Honestly the NB 1080 is a phenomenal shoe. It’s probably serving you well. For most you can’t go wrong with a neutral cushioned light weight shoe (1080 falls in that category). That holds true for genu valgum
This makes so much sense why stable neutral shoes don’t hurt my knee and stability shoes do! Brands should come up with a degree of pronation so they can measure how much someone arch should collapse to keep them at midline
I’m 74 and walk in lieu of running since I have bone on bone on my bowed left medial knee. I plan to eventually get the knee replaced, however want to see if I can reduce the knee pain on my 3 mile walks on hard surface. I currently have one year old Clifton’s with custom orthotic ($600) for my low arch. Will these factors apply to walking shoes with bone on bone knee. Interesting that early in life my custom sky boots had cants/wedges and I recently started trying a wedge insert in my golf shoes to avoid sliding.
Hi i just started running i feel pain in my knees in medial area .. i just notices more fast or sprint i run more pain grows ... Pain reduced if i gap in my running for 2 days but it doesn't end at all ...
Hi thanks for the information. I recently bought a new shoe and have run a few times with it so far. Noticing pain in just my left knee. Right side is fine. Wondering if it could be from the shoe or something with the way I’m running. I am left side dominant so maybe that has something to do with it. Thanks
Had exactly the same problem last year, battling medial left knee pain. Dog ate my shoes, got a new pair but with less arch and softer been running pain free since the new year 😂
Thanks Doc for the info.. I did got medial knee pain after using arch support for few months.. What shoes do you recommend for medial meniscus tear pain ?
@@learn2run101 thanks Doctor.. I will look into new balance .. I got Hoka .. What do you think about Hoka Bondy 8 .. ? R they good for knee meniscus and hip labral strain ?
@@truthseeker4226 yes those are usually good as well. If the shoe is curved one the bottom (the last) to promote more rotation that could be problematic for your knee and hip
My issue is that when I walk for a long time I get inside knee pain. I have used Merrell shoes for a while and while that is a great shoe I feel its causing knee pain - on the inside. I now have Hoka Clifton 8 with an arch support. This shoe has outside heel softer than the mid arch portion giving support. Additionally, I have an insole to give some arch support as well. I hope I've done the right thing.
Had many pairs of Nike and Adiddas shoes which really didn’t help with my medial knee pain. I went to a professional shoe store to check out my running and walking form to get the right shoes but none off them helped, I had pronation when running. But none of the pronation shoes helped, it was just painful to walk on. So I asked to try the hookas Clifton one one, went up a size to get more space for my toes and the shoes has definitely made a difference. I haven’t fixed my knee to 100% yet but when I walk or run I can really feel the shoes giving me good cushioning (not the best support on trail runs) but it feels way more natural, by natural I mean that it doesn’t force my feet and mess up my joint alignment. I slowly feel my alignment are naturally getting better and stronger by wearing the hookas Clifton one one. Other shoes like Nike react or Addidas boost felt off and caved my knees slowly in. If anyone sees this my best advice from my experience is to learn what helped from others and go to a shoe store and try everyone out and find the one that helps you and fits you the best. Since not all shoes work on everyone.
Thanks doc!

Great video. New to me. Just got a medial torn meniscus surgery. What is the best running shoes for future prevention
A neutral cushion shoe like new balance 1080. Want the shoe to offer some protection before the force even gets to your knee from the ground
I had a bad knee injury but had to work 16 hr shfts as RN i got MBT shoes without them i couldnt walk but was able to manage 16 hr shifts with them
What are MBT shoes? Thank you for your work as an RN

My physio just told me my arch drops and it's putting load on my medial meniscus tear.suggested I get arch support.im confused now!
subscribed...awesome info even if I'm going to have to watch a few times to fully understand
This was a few years ago. I've worked hard to make my message more simple and easier to understand. Thanks for being here.
Wondering where I might be able to get lateral wedge orthotics that encourage what you mentioned?
Local Podiatrist is your best bet. Then followed by a physical therapist that specializes in orthotics.

You betcha. Highly recommended videoing yourself running in slow motion sometime from the side and back. You’ll learn a lot!

Unfortunately I’ve heard this many times before with the arch support. New Balance 1080 are my go to and anything from new balance foam series.
