Finally Answering a Street Photography Question (with KingJvpes)

- KingJvpes and I, at one point, were both film photography content creators in the Bay Area. When I was living back home, we never crossed paths. It was only a long time after I moved away when we finally met in Chicago at the Beers & Camera event. He and I have a similar practice methodology when it comes to street photography; we implemented a lot of our athletic disciplines to our art form.
However, as some or maybe all of you know, street photographers can sometimes disagree with each other on philosophies to the point of projection on one's character. I don't subscribe to that treatment or behavior, but KingJvpes and I sit down to discuss the matter of this conflict in this genre of photography we both participate in.
Come say hello!

The “beef” came from the time I still lived back in the Bay Area in my early content creating. When I started making film photography videos, I saw Kingjvpes was another player in the game also in the Bay.
My competitive edge kept me from being lazy knowing someone else is working hard to create videos for the community. For the record, I never hated him xD no real “beef”, but I was competitive (in a healthy way)
We met this past May in Chicago at the Beers & Cameras event. Great dude.
There’s your fun fact ❤
my man opening with an e40 track is such a vibe.
had to do it for the Bay!
Thanks for having me on brother 🖤
an absolute honor to have you
The "beef" part about this friendship came from when I still lived in the Bay Area. When I started out making film photography content, I checked to see who else was making similar videos in my area. Lo' and behold, it was none other than Kingjvpes. My competitive side came out, but not in a toxic way.
It was more of a healthy competitive edge to prevent me from being lazy knowing someone else is working hard to deliver good videos to help the community. I told him this in-person, so this isn't a secret nor is it an actual "beef" :D We met in-person at the Chicago Beers & Camera event this past May.
Fun fact
Huge fan of Jung Jin Lee!! So surprised and excited to hear you mention her. Shooting street in a "metaphorical" context is next level. Taking street photography beyond a genre, into fine art.
Thank you for the inspiration!!
A lot of really thought provoking conversation going on here! Love it. Street photography seems so simple on the surface, but it is incredibly complex as you start to pursue it. Keep on making these dope videos 💙.
Love seeing more representation in photography! KingJvpes appears like such a humble and hard working dude. Digging this series!
This was so interesting exploring the creative minds and how each person photographs. You do produce slick and stylish videos but the substance is what makes your work admirable and informative.
two sexy dudes on a bench ... can't go wrong 🥰
bench mob
Enjoyed the conversation and opinions. Thanks
Garry Winogrand inspired me like no other...thank yall for this collab!
Great seeing you photograph in SF again!! Love the video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Felt great to be on home turf again
Love this video! I don’t normally enjoy John’s videos, the energy is not quite a match for me, very performative - but his considered and thoughtful approach in this video is a great vibe. Well curated/created atmosphere, Chris!
Quick (personal) comparison of Chris and Bruce Gilden. From the footages I’ve watched, BG seeks out his targets from a distance and then moves on to set his camera ready to shoot, and here is the key difference; eye contact. Chris Chu makes his presence known and often makes eye contact and even a “look of mutual approval” before/after the photo. Chris seems to be there “with the crowd” and not so much “in your face”.
This series is so so good.
thanks, bro!!
digging the beef series, cheers mate.
I got beef with erryone
The music soundtrack is incredible
I’m french and have been obsessed by New York for a looooong time.
As a result I mostly know about the NY street photography scene, all the dudes that you came across by watching Paulie B’s videos, and that’s all UA-cam pushes to me.
What are good photogs from the west coast, from Seattle to San Diego? Who runs good YT channels? I mean besides KingJvpes.
Is there other cities with groups of photogs kinda like in NY?
Damn man, if we were in the early 2000 I wished you were a TV Show !
I'm excited for this :) Yay area
proudly!
Commenting to flex on everyone who didn’t see this early
How do you two feel about visually pleasing photos vs photos that strictly only tells a story? As in, is telling a story all you need, or does it bother you when a photo has a nice story but is visually/esthetically mid/ugly? (To me, esthetics can 100% be added in editing. Like editing itself is an art form.)
We love to see it
Should’ve shown your C-walk routine
Bay Area Photo legends. Let’s goooo
R E P R E S E N T
sheeeesh video fire!
I considered throwing in thst clip with your confrontation 😂
HYPHY AHHHHHHH INTRO

I had been pronouncing it as "Jupes" in my head this whole time 😭
he mentioned that a lot of people say that too and I couldn't believe it.
guess people actually do mistake that username for jupes
Yay Area!
Is there any other San Francisco street photographers or Bay Area photographers that you recommend?
Nice hat ;)
Sac folks know
So fun to see the mix of material from Daly City + SF + NYC, with the same main characters no less @@whoschrischu! Also mega job with the bts video for Bandit, that was also a fun bit of UA-cam universe crossover!
The reason people can’t define street photography is because very few people actually know how it started, who and why.
