I think it is both serious and humorous. John Darnielle is the kind of guy who finds the humor in tragedy and the tragedy in comedy.

One of my favourite songs ever, I feel it's a love song and often has me welling up.

This is the song you blast when you're leaving the courthouse, divorce papers in hand. It's cathartic.

Funny, whimsical lyrics. It was an interesting listen today, the back story helped to clear things up a bit, cheers guys!

I love this song, and in context with the other songs about the Alpha Couple (from other albums as well as Tallahassee) it is such a significant one. A bit victorious that there's no longer any ambiguity and they're finally owning up to hating each other, tragic because they're both too stubborn to do anything about it and because their big dreams have completely ended, and I honestly hadn't considered it funny until today. Thank you for showing me a new aspect of a beloved and familiar song

@@theaudiophiles7889 Heck, it's always lovely to find a new good channel. If you're looking for suggestions, I'm not sure if you'll have heard it already, but the song You're At The Party by Lemon Demon is lyrically and musically fascinating and I bet a fair number of people would like to see it discussed

Love this song! Makes me feel great about my relationship - even in the darkest of times. Hoping to never get dragged down to this level, which seems quite extreme.

    One of my favourite songs.
People keep telling me that it's not a cheerful comedy, and I think they're dumb.

    • @adderous

It's a comedy, but one where you're laughing at the characters, not one where they're in on the joke. The humor is in the fact that they're awful and they deserve each other.

@@adderous Nah. I'm laughing at the bleakness, the over-the-top despair and hopelessness.
And yet somehow I don't like Clovn or other nordic "comedies".

Yup, good fun. Love the rolling piano but the blackly humorous lyrics are the main draw here, and they remind me variously of Magnetic Fields, Randy Newman and even a bit of Mozza.

i actually saw john in concert years ago, his quote as the prelude to the song was "this song is about 2 people who should have never, ever met".

Late to this video but I think the context of the song is important. John had been singing about his “alpha couple” for years. They were a pair of co-dependent, alcoholic down in life people that if not violent then it was never too far off. This album was their send off. John wanted this album to be the final word on them. The whole song cycle over the years bounced between humor and harrowing. A solid body of work.

I, for one, will never be sober, and no-one will have anything good to say about me. :D
This song is always guaranteed to bring a smile to my face.

Credit to both the listener and the songwriter how clearly Jon was able to describe the vibe of the entire album and its characters from one listen of this song.

Can I throw in a suggestion- Kitchens of Distinction, He holds her, he needs her. I know you must have a list as long as Madonna’s personal shopper, but I would love to hear your reaction to this one. Don’t worry, it’s not one of my weird ones, just a good tune.

This song is pretty much the constant, not just the singer in a drunk state

It’s blatantly rebellious and irrational rage at the idea of a wasted life with someone who deserves nothing but spite. If you can’t relate, it MIGHT be funny, but people find catharsis in this song. It’s a “watch the world burn” kind of song.

      Thanks Chris for your comments.
The song definitely has plenty of humour in it, amongst other things, but as you say not every one can relate to that side of it.
      Cheers, Jon.
