Well In all, whether Rudy is a fan or not, mystery booster is actually one of the best booster packs experiences wizards has printed in a long time. They do look like repacks though, as the cards have nothing new about the printing except the tiny magic logo in the corner.
The problem with mystery is the set is over 1600 cards, and that dilutes chances. The 2nd most expensive card is an uncommon and that's not guaranteed per-box. If you open up the bottom of half of the mythics, you lost money per-box at the going $150+ rate.

I always wanted to play. It's weird cause Battletech has been randomly mentioned multiple times or just ran into in the last few days and I haven't heard anything about it in years. I ended up getting Battletech 3050 for the SNES just to quell this weird out of nowhere urgent.

I bought a repack for $10 and it had 3 RR charizards, one Reshiram and Charizard also RR and 4 Alpha Black Lotus’s, and here I though these were a scam

@@nonabnormal2586 yeah well... for Vintage format, you won't go far with just one black lotus (even if it's in the restricted list). Even harder to find friends to play with for that format. I find it hard to get any 'gaming value' from a fake lotus

I remember back in the day my cousins dad had a black lotus and multiple time walks. He introduced us to the game. We didn't have anything close to them. We started playing around Icee Age. He loved to play his blue control deck with control magic, icy manipulator, prodigal sorcerer/zuran spell caster with a Leviathon. I mainly used a red burn deck, and his dad loved to use green with Gaeas Liege. I know my old cards weren't worth nearly anything compared to his, but I wish I had them back just for the nostalgia
My former LGS, 15 years ago, used to sell repacks, they guaranteed 1 rare but it was not uncommon to get more than one, but they only contained bulk garbage, they never stated anything that would make you think there was any value in them. Everyone knew they are garbage.
They were pretty cheap and we loved them because they contained cards from Revised to current sets, and made for very interesting draft and sealed events. Stuff like that is the only reason to buy them repacks. You will not get your moneys worth in products but it might not be a bad way to have some random fun some weekend with your friends.

I've been reporting repacks under incorrect condition, as they are selling them as new. eBay's definition of "New" includes being unopened as a requirement. Even if nothing happens right now, enough users flooding eBay with reports over this stuff could annoy them enough to change their policy.
What you should do is buy them up then report them as incorrect condition after they’ve already arrived. These people don’t deserve their money or cards back

I was a struggling HVAC mechanic and I always said everything would be great once I got that third arm. Sure enough, didn't score a black lotus but I won my third arm in a repack. So they are absolutely the truth!!!

There is one way that makes repacks cool in my oppinion.
A store in Brazil sells repacks not as a form of gambling, but as draft practice material. You can buy 65 packs for less than a deckbuilder's toolkit price, and tell you upfront the cards contained are not valuable; Each pack wouldn't cost 25 US cents. The store gets rid of their bulk commons, uncommons and rares, and pretty much provides the buyer with a bunch of chãos draft experiences, as well as a nice collection. I bought a couple lots of that for fun, and the cards contained were actually pretty damn awesome for the most part; I don't regret buying it. And the store was not scamming anyone.
That's the key here. Why scam timmies with counterfeit cards when with a little adjustment you can profit in a honest way? I bet that making said counterfeits is a whole lot more effort than just selling bulk stuff for chaos draft, a lot more cost to start up, and most people wouldn't fall for it anyways. So what's the point?
Where could I find this?
The people who would do this are looking for as much as possible, fast as possible and , almost always cash. You are right mostly, but as people who can be scammed exists , there will always be the scammer, who is willing to go though crazy lengths just to make a quick $3000 or even a quick $300 sometimes , and as card prices go up...god help us all.
Because these scammers can sell repacked boosters with cards that they either counterfeit or buy $1 the hundred, knowing that some people might buy whole boxes of these because of stories of other buyers who think they've actually dropped some P9 from these?

Pennies? Granted the comment is 8 months old but if you can buy alpha or beta commons for under $5 each you definitely should. Last year I bought out my LGS of Beta lands for $3.50 each.

The biggest thing that jumped out to me is the lack of yellowing in the text box.
Me and my girlfriend picked up some free cards one of our LGS has out in a box for people to take. We both randomly picked a pile each before buying some singles and sleeves. Months down the line we were building decks and I came across two fake Fetch Lands some joker (or a Timmy?) had put in there 😂
When the three were grouped together, the fake one's text background was just so much whiter than the real ones, which were a brownish white.

I haven’t played Magic since 1997 ( maybe 1998?). I fell out of it right around the time Alliances came out. I went to college and did the whole BSB to MBA thing, and now work in finance. FWIW, Rudy is solid. I disagree on some aspects, but that’s normal. His philosophy on investment is legit.

I don't mind the dollar (australian dollar) re-packs from a game store we have over here, you never get anything amazing but you get some interesting stuff that slots nicely into EDH decks or inspires new ones, plus it scratches that open a few boosters itch for a very low price
Things like that are good for drafting in my experience. Added bonus is that people will actually have to build good, synergistic decks without any ridiculous bombs that might be worth money.

I really don't get why making counterfeits of Magic cards is so hard. The texture, the coloring the shine... I mean, Garfield in 1993 probably wasn't investing a lot into precautions preventing that. I assume he just used a regular printing contract with a regular press, regular paper and regular colors. He wasn't expecting people to buy more than a starter and 3 booster packs, so he sure as hell wouldn't expect someone to professionaly reprint cards.
Rudy I appreciate your channel. With success comes haters. I have learned alot from your videos about what kind of collector I am. I used to be a player but freinds ripped me off and now I just collect by myself. I am thinking of starting my own mtg UA-cam channel but it won't be pack or box openings. Just mtg current info on what's going in the market and my opinion based off all of the mtg you tube videos including yours.
It's a lot like counterfeit money/currency. I worked for a bank in the 90s and the first way I'd know that I had a counterfeit in a stack of bills was the feel of the 'paper' as I was counting. It felt wrong. It felt slick, like paper, which currency is not (it's mostly cotton like the denim in your jeans). It may look perfect, but it won't feel right. Here with the Lotus, the artwork was great, but the paper was wrong, the ink was wrong, so it feels wrong and shines wrong. Know the real by feel and sight, and it will be much easier to spot the fakes. You don't study counterfeits in order to identify counterfeits. You study the real thing and get to know it very well. Great video and great advice.

i've gotten fake cards from tcgplayer before: they took care of everything with little to no hassle... but i bought a 10 dollar jewler's loop because of it. my favorite was a fake spellskite that i paid 5 bucks for

It may be sad, but I knew people at my old shop that would pay that much ($10-$20) knowing the card was fake just for a good looking proxy.

Yeah if your playgroups accept proxies, you can play with whatever you want. I personnaly don't care what the card is. I will care if its a sanctioned event.

No. Just no.. find a deck you want to build a buy singles. Have a bunch of cards that sit around is worthless and takes up gross amounts of space.
Do not. Those cards are useless to you after a certain point. There is a reason why they put those cards into those lots. If you want to play just buy any of the Commander prebuilds or singles you need for the deck you want to make. Don't waste your money on crap.
I'm sure Stella knows they're all bulk, and sometimes it's fun to check out random rares to build janky decks around. Do you, I'm sure they dont cost much and you might have fun.
I did it like 10 years ago from scg, and it's totally all bulk. On the plus side, some of what was considered bulk is now worth a bit more.
It can be fun if you wanna play pauper or do a pseudo draft with friends or something. You each buy a thing of commons/uncommons then have to make a deck. It's also a good way to bolster your collection if you want to play commander. Commander is typically more casual so even some pretty weak and bad cards are decent

My LGS sells repacks for $1 a pack they still have the normal ratio of rares / commons / uncommons they are just random stuff

Thing is some of you would look at this and say "oh that guy got scammed $10 for a fake card". From my perspective I would happily pay $5-10 for a fake high-quality replica because I enjoy the art and would like to play Vintage without destroying my wallet

Beside the other flaws on the fake, there only appears to be 2 alignment marks on the bottom, and it looks like the ink bled through them.
Genuine cards have a blue core. You can take a jeweler's loop and trace the blue core around the edges.
The textbox color of the fake is also coming through as a whiter tint to me.
The authentic is more of a cream color.

I wish I saw this video before I bought into one of these scams. Thankfully I only bought 2 listings from a dude for like $12 total, and then discovered your video. I was naive since I've just recently got back into Magic after nearly 20 years. I did not win a fake lotus, but I disputed it anyway, reported the fraud, and got my money back. Now I just buy a bunch of factory sealed booster boxes/loose packs from a few different lgs. Sometimes I do purchase old card lots off of eBay and and up with some decent Beta cards and a bunch of other old school cards.

Just look at the centering and scale of the lotus, it's slightly larger and not centered the same as the other two. Also the text box is more white than the other two.
I wish Delerium was still around. I trusted them enough that when they would do a repack that the lotus was real. (Odds were still horrible 1/5000) I also miss card shop life.
Rudy, note the beta lotus vs the actual real beta cards, the corners have that white triangular look in them, the fake lotus does not.
One of the most noticeable things on the fake for me was the color of the text in text box and it was also missing the brown tone to the text box.
The middle one has a darker shade I believe bit I can be full of myself at some times
How to tell if a black lotus is real-
Get one in a pack back in 1993, hold on to it in a sleeve for 26 years, and get it graded in person at PSA.

But! If I buy one, expecting that I'll get scammed, am I really getting scammed, even if I want the fakes? Hell, I'd pay $10 for a black lotus "proxy". I'd probably never use it anyway, not even in casual formats with my friends that allow proxies, as long as you're upfront about it.
I just had a chat with someone from eBay. They said repacks were definitely against their policies. Now I honestly don't think me alone will achieve much, but if others could help raising the concern of repacks, it would be much appreciated!
I highlighted it as unregulated gambling of items with thousands of dollars, which seemed to catch their attention.
I have worked in printing for 30+ years, and when you were holding the two cards close to the camera at 10:14 you could see a huge difference in the screening of the print. The real card has that nice rosette pattern of the different ink angles coming together, where they fake looks like someone took a scan of a printed piece and printed it off a laser printer, or some other device that does not use dots and mixing of CMYK inks (Cyan Magenta Yellow Black). Just saying.
The fake one is also missing these little white corners between the black surrounding and the inner black at the bottom
I was wondering when this scam was going to be brought up. Theres a fun one on ebay right now where someones offering 3000 lottery repacks where one pack has a "you won the black lotus" note in it. the packs go for like 20 bucks each, not including postage. You do the math here, and the dude can actually afford to buy a lotus to make sure he isnt flagged for scamming and still walk away with 50 grand afterwards once all the packs are sold.
If it was truly random it shouldn't take till all the packs are sold.
Yes, hence it being a scam in so much that it could still be legitimately run and still make a massive profit, but more than likely wont be.
Rudy, what do you think of booster box breaks? It's where you pick a color or card type for x amount and you get all the cards opened from that booster box of what you picked. It's opened live but it just seems like another way to hose people somehow.

also the bottom triangles in the border are not a prominent white. They pretty dark in color.
The text box on this one also looked incredibly pale in color compared to the real original betas. That was the first thing that jumped out at me when I saw that one...

I bought some repacks from my local 7-11, they were $5 for 100 cards I wasn't expecting anything of value and I pulled about $10 worth of commons/uncommons and the rare was actually $2 so not horrible. I wouldn't gamble on these kinds of ebay repacks that offer a chance at something rare though.
Is this a common 7-11 thing? Or is it a private franchise owner? Curious. I used to like buying the dollar store packs just for the fun of opening something cheap. Can't find those anymore.

Honestly, I'd rather a decent Black Lotus proxy over the chaff that usually is in a repack.
I sold core19 repacks just to move all the extra cards. No one at the time wanted arclight phoenix so I was putting x2 or more in some boxes. selling at 30$. x1 phoenix alone just about paid for most of the boxes later. So not everyone is scamming, or trying to scam. Repack is just an easy and known word.
