- Today we sat down and watched the Super Mario Bros. Movie! Just released on DVD and streaming, this second attempt at a mainline Nintendo movie was a smash hit with audiences, but the critics didn’t seem to care. Were they justified with some of their negative reviews? Or is this actually the best movie of all time? Was Jack Black the star of the show with Bowsers’ Peaches song? Are the Minions from Illumination in the movie? Is it consistent with the Mario Lore and easter eggs? And Did Chris Pratt really stomp KOOPAS?!

The Super Mario’s Bros. Movie - 2023
The movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the "let's-a go" attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere. We open with the Super Mario Brothers reckoning with their struggling plumbing business, and wind up in a whirlwind adventure through Mushroom Kingdom. Through their journey, we meet a cast of familiar, lovable characters, ultimately uniting together to defeat the power-hungry villain, Bowser. The Super Mario Bros. Movie takes what millions of gamers worldwide have loved for thirty-five years and levels it up to a new and breathtaking cinematic experience. I love what they did with the Shy Guys, made them genuinely feel creepy but also still maintained personality in them.

Two things about this movie that I found funny.
Mario and Luigi finish off Bowser with a nearly frame perfect recreation of the finishing move used during the Evangelion synchronized fighting scene.
Secondly, when the Luma showed up at the end of the movie, someone in the front row of the theater yelled "CAN SOMEONE PLEASE SHOOT THAT THING!?"

Fun Fact: Jump by Van Halen was originally going to be used in the final fight, but the composer fought for there to be an original song in the final battle. And man was it a good song.
Every single pop culture song had an original soundtrack for it to, but Illumination spent too much money to not use those songs for most of them. Easily the worst part of the movie.

I love how everyone hated that they gave Chris Pratt the Mario role even though he did a pretty good job with Emmet in the Lego movies, which kinda had a fairly similar premise in the first one

I hope that they have Mario’s actual voice actor, Charles Martinet, have a big role in the films. Like reprising Wario or something.

Yeah, it kinda makes sense they'd cast someone else for Mario, since he's rarely seen talking.
But Wario speaks in full sentences in Warioware Gold, and Warioware Get it Together, and if they went with that version of Wario, it'd make sense for Charles to voice him.
Seeing Bren and Josiah in a sort-of Death Battle over a Spike is something I never knew I needed.

Watched it in cinema and actually kinda enjoyed it. There were only 9 of us and most of us were kids, 5 kids 4 adults.

While I think Illumination actually did really well with this movie, I don't think they should handle all the Nintendo movies going forward. For something like a Legend of Zelda or Metroid movie, other studios should make those.
But illumination could also do movies of Nintendo’s more quirkier titles, like Kirby and Pikmin.
Illumination is pretty good (outside of their music) for more light-hearted series. I'd love to see the more serious Legend of Zelda games (original, LttP, OoT. MM, TP, BotW, TotK) done by a Japanese animation studio (ideally Ghibli).
Well too bad since Illumination just announced that they are making a Zelda movie...

Exactly! I personally take issue with a lot of the professional criticisms of this movie for that reason, because it's not like I believe any movie should be exempt from constructive criticism overall...it's just that they expected a Mario movie, to have a rich and extensive plot
I feel like the people who expected that, while I can sort of understand where they come from because of how saturated the market can be, have never played a single Mario game-
@Damien Earl But it's not a game, it's a movie. That's why it doesn't make sense to dismiss the criticism with "but the games" like thats a good reason to treat it differently than any other kids movie.
@@damienearl8302 I mean if it's artsy and has a great message it's a big bonus. Personally I'm a sonic fan and I didn't really like the sonic movies all that much so I probably search for certain things too

Every movie has its own charm, and for this one, it's the fact that it feels like it takes place in the universe of the games, because that's why most people would've been excited to watch it in the first place!

I love how the Blue shell breaks identity rules by having the sounds of the shell without wings from MK8, but being a flying one such as the one from Wii.
I loved the Banzai Bill scene, an unstoppable nuke going fast, unable to stop, or change direction easily. It really gave it, “gravity”, as lack of a better term. At least until mario poked it in the eye, and it suddenly seemed very bad.
I really wish they used the King Bill for that though becuase the King Bill is already an unstoppable giangantic version of the Banzai Bill.

He's actually doing the accent the full way through. But a New York accent, as predicted, is an American accent, so some of the words he speaks sounds "normal". That's probably why you think that.

1:16 it wasn’t really about Chris Pratt being casted, but how Charles Martinet, the long time VA wasn’t offered the role. Its just a regular occurrence in movies of IPs to replace the skilled competent VAs with a celebrity cast

It was worth it for me to get the DVD the day it came out!
Illumination did a fantastic job with this movie, even with Nintendo being their manager!
This is one of the least painful Illumination movies to sit through, but considering what we expected from the others, this is pretty much the cream of the crap.

The rainbow roads that they used in the movie is the one from DS. There’s no other rainbow Road that just has a strip of one color it’s always checkered or warped. It’s never looks like that except for NDS. So yes, you can get the mini turbo boost that fast. You are welcome. - The Nintendo Nerd

If the one critic said the plot for the Illumination Mario Bros film wasn't complicated enough then I don't wanna know what they would think about a Kingdom Hearts adaptation probably say it's too complicated even though Kingdom Hearts is known for having a complicated plot to where I played it my brain basically had an equivalent of a heart attack just trying to understand the plot. Charlie Day is so perfect as Luigi to where if there's a live action Mario film or show Charlie Day absolutely would be a perfect live action Luigi. The cast is interesting looking back at the announcement but somehow in excitation it works amazingly

At 1:28 when Bren was saying he had low expectations for the movie, I kid you not, when his screen moved down, a notification popped up, making it look perfectly like my notification squished the video 🤣🤣🤣
I really enjoyed this movie. My only gripe with it is that there are all the random 80s songs that are just placed in throughout the runtime for no reason. Nintendo has libraries of songs that could easily have been used in place of these songs and not worry about paying for copyright.
The worst example of this is when they used Take on Me instead of an original song called Driving me Bananas.
I liked it. I reminded me that mario was such an icon in the 80’s. It made sense as well since it’s illumination and they love their use of real life songs.

I was fully prepared for Jack Black to carry this movie. I'm surprised to say I enjoyed this too!

You mentioned how they used actual Mario music for the scene where Mario and Luigi get the Star, but that was very nearly not the case. Illumination and Nintendo wanted to use Van Halen's Jump, but Brian Tyler held his ground and that's how we got the actual Star theme playing for this scene.
If only they hadn't used any pop reference songs, it would've been 10/10 for sure.

This is genuinely one of the best movies of the past several years imo, I literally grinned the whole time I was watching it because it’s just so great.
