Home Sweet Home Alone - 2021
A married couple tries to steal back a valuable heirloom from a troublesome kid. Directed by Dan Mazer, written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell, and starring Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Archie Yates, Aisling Bea, Kenan Thompson, Pete Holmes, Ally Maki, and Chris Parnell. It is the sixth film in the Home Alone franchise and works as a direct sequel to Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. I find it hilarious that the original director of the first two Home Alone films, Chris Columbus, literally hates this reboot.
He said during an interview:
"Nobody got in touch with me about it, and it's a waste of time as far as I'm concerned. What's the point? I'm a firm believer that you don't remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone. You're not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It's just not going to happen. So why do it? It's like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film - a live-action version of that. What's the point? It's been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original."

@@Koopkiris just watch the original. There is absolutely no reason to remake Home Alone like this. It's not a silent movie, it's not in black and white, and the tech is mostly fine. Do some AI stuff if you cannot handle how 80's/90's movies look, but Home Alone does not need to be done again.

Worst part of this, at least for me, is the casting of Aisling Bea as the mother. YOU DON'T MAKE AN IRISH WOMAN BRITISH!! It wouldn't even be that bad if she wasn't usually a funny woman outside of this.

Wanna know the worst part? That kid played Yorkie in Jojo rabbit. And he absolutely STOLE every scene he was in. This poor guy was just given shit material.
Dude, I love when modern films think they’re being self-aware by talking about how bad reboots have gotten, as though that absolves them of being absolutely terrible films.
Being self-aware is easier than, you know, actually writing a good movie.
It reminds me of people who will harp on about how much of a terrible person they are instead of actually trying to be a better person
In an original draft of the script, the movie started out with an ad for the McCallister Home Security System, starring Kevin himself. The commercial would then reveal that he has a wife, a 5-year-old daughter and still lives in his childhood home.
This would have been Macaulay Culkin's rumored cameo in the film if he had accepted Disney's $2.5 million offer.
He knew it was cringe. Damn, he has honor!

@@BurningAzure Well to be fair, a lot of the McAlister family was being a bit too antagonistic to an 8 year-old kid, including the mother at the begining. While it's a bit hyperbole, point still stands for the most part.

There are 6 movies now. The original, Lost in New York, the third one, Taking Back the House, The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home.
Honestly I feel bad for the cast, and can’t blame them for phoning it in for this crappily written reboot of a beloved classic. The actor who plays the main kid (Archie Yates) is great in Jojo Rabbit, and it sucks that his second major movie role is in this trash.

I'll just throw my dumb idea for a sequel here, because while it's probably bad, I doubt it's worse than this.
Kevin's an adult, he's married and has a daughter. He made his own security system and he got rich off of it. Because of his experiences, he's a very protective parent and his daughter is very shy and nervous child because of it. Some criminals get the bright idea of kidnapping his daughter for ransome, so they somehow trap Kevin and his wife somewhere without their phones, then hack into and disable their home security system, while his daughter is home alone (roll credits). Before he left, he was playing with his daughter and accidentally took a walkie talkie with him, wich is now his only way of communicating with his her. At first he tells his daughter what to do, but over the course of the movie his daughter starts coming up with her own ideas and improving her dads. A third into the movie, the walkie talkie either breaks or runs out of batteries and Kevins daughter has to fend for herself, taking her fathers advice to heart while still making the traps her own. The movie ends with the family being reunited, the attempted kidnappers getting arrested, Kevins daughter becoming more confident, and Kevin even implements one of her ideas into his security system.

Making the robbers have legitimate reasons to break into the house (retrieve their own property to save their house) would have been showing the wet bandits hanging out with their families before attempting to rob Macauley culkin
This is a prime example of a reboot trying to make money off of a nostalgic franchise but failing in every way imaginable

I remember watching the trailers and realizing that the burglars would be sympathizable. Immediately I knew the movie would be trash. The first movie was satisfying because you wanted these terrible people who flooded houses to be in pain, but this one, that won't work since these character are the kind you would cheer for. As soon as I saw Erin from the office, for example, I knew it would suck to see her in pain.
Exactly! Harry and Marv literally said multiple times that they were going to kill Kevin and in Home Alone 2 they actually almost did. They were bad people that you wanted to see defeated because they had no problem harming a child.
These "robbers" aren't even trying to harm him or even really rob everything. They're just trying to get one (1) thing back that was theirs in the beginning anyways.

Like, it was a holiday movie for kids full of slapstick comedy but that didn't mean it had to be dumbed down. I really appreciate when they take the time to throw in minor stuff like that into movies.

Maybe the next home alone, the kid finds a disheveled and emaciated adult Macaulay Culkin living amongs the walls of their house they just moved in. While his parents are away in paris, Macaulay tries to reenact the events of the first movie.

So much of this movie is executed so poorly. When he punches the snowman you can clearly see the top half of it split from the lower half, showing that it's just foam spheres with powder on them.
I like how when a toy factory makes a mistake the product becomes significantly more valuable. Someone should just make a factory that just screws up everything, they'd make millions.
But then that becomes less special, and the normal ones rise in popularity

Say what you will about Home Alone 3, but at least it was watchable. Like, I'd tolerate it until the end, even if it wasn't good. But you guys actually watched a Home Alone movie that after the third one until the end credits? True American heroes.

Why does Disney have this habit of adapting/rebooting things they genuinely don't seem to understand? Like...they seem to always reboot/adapt stuff and then change what makes them work as stories and this is probably the fourth example I've seen of it.
