LYRICS:
staring at the sea
will she come?
is there hope for me
after all is said and done
anything at any price
all of this for you
all the spoils of a wasted life
all of this for you
all the world has closed her eyes
tired faith all worn and thin
for all we could have done
and all that could have been
ocean pulls me close
and whispers in my ear
the destiny i've chose
all becoming clear
the currents have their say
the time is drawing near
washes me away
makes me disappear
i descend from grace
in arms of undertow
i will take my place
in the great below
i can still feel you
even so far away
You don’t listen to Nine Inch Nails....... You feel Nine Inch Nails......
Well said......Absof**kinglutely......
This song is absolutely amazing
That's also true if taken literally.
Bait comment
100%
Great song for a rainy day. Makes me wanna take a nice long relaxing bath with my toaster.
butter dat bread bitch!
Ah, feels good to laugh out loud after crying all through the song.
Thank you!
On a production standpoint NIN are one of the most important bands of all time.
You mean Trent Reznor
"For all we could have done ... and all that could have been" it hits me deeper than I knew I could feel
I'm sorry for people who listen to this song and/or read the lyrics and feel nothing.
Reznor's greatest song, period. The music is breathtaking...
This is an absolutely amazing song, I think one of his most underappreciated.
@@astyanax905 my favorite nin song of all
-Reads the top Comment on every NIN/Reznor song ever
It is one of the best songs he done. But it's really underrated in my opinion.
Blaspheme!!!! all his songs are, just as Maynard James Keenan, and David Draiman songs are!!!!
this song pulled me through the worst heartache of my life
😢
Nicole K I thought this said headache for a second
Me 2
I can relate. We all here have been in the Great Below...
Me too...........
Most underplayed song in history
14 years and I still feel like crying every time I hear this wonderful masterpiece. Goosebumps.. every fucking time...
hello i am here to remind you that 8 years ago you said this
Ow my, was it in 2000?
Life goes by pretty fast. Enjoy every moment.
i thought it was just a stupid hashtag but it really got better
That is something said by young people and the really old.
Time eventually washes everything away; the bad and the good. Or like my favorite line from Hamlet, "passing through nature into eternity...."
20+ years have past like the wind, since I first heard this song. And now the lyrics hit even harder.
As I descend from grace in arms of undertow, I will take my place in the great below.
You know you're f**ked up when you can relate to NIN lyrics.
you know you're a real messed up hecked up guy when you censor the word fuck in a comment on a NIN song on youtube.
JUAN Some people get offended easily by bullshit like that. Just trying to spare myself their complains.
This shit is my theme song.
Actually, I feel you're open when you can relate to NIN lyrics.
Indeed!
2021 anybody's still listening this super song? After many I'm still with you, even so far away
Damn... Every time trents voice gives me chills
One of my Favs by Nine Inch Nails.
Like my lost love song to my hubby & friends ❤
An artistic breakthrough we have here. First heard this in 2008 - still so much left to be appreciated by 2019.
This is and will always be my favorite song. Reznor's masterpiece.
100% agree
True story
He wanted sade to sing it, but was afraid to ask
This song still gives me chills every time I hear it! In love with it
when I first heard this song I was at the worst part of my IV meth addiction.. it could not have came to me at a more perfect moment in life. it was the epitome of what I felt about how I was living. I did two years in prison shortly after. singing it to myself in my cell every day
Skyze Eaton You're a great person. you can take control again. you experienced a part in your life that not a whole lot of people can relate to. and that's not just a bad thing
I been clean 8 1/2 years off of meth myself. You can do it!
You met me at a very strange time in my life.
It's fucked that you went to prison
But it's a great song and I'm happy for you
This song have a lot of sad memories, but also beauty it is strange
This song! Entrenched in me. Soundtrack to worst time of my life. Brilliant. Like cold, black elixir in every fiber of my being.
I am also not okay
The best song ever! I just can't stop listening to it!
I LOVE this song. His voice is complete ecstasy.
Damn. The Deepness of this song is Just ....Damn.
I think these words Nine Inch NAILED it. Irony Incarnate. Shall he bow down? Wow. :)
I want that song to be played in my funeral
I remember when my dad listened to nin and I thought it was odd now i realize, now i see it all.
I genuinely feel sorry for anyone who has not yet listened to this album, Missing out.
This NIN song should be played in the radio station KOST 103 f.m. along with the other love songs 🤔🎼👌
this song pulled me through the worst headache of my life
everyone's talking about how poetic or freaky this song is and I'm just here because this song plays when Judas Iscariot dies in my school's annual play about the passion of Jesus christ
Doesn't matter why you were here, and I hope the annual play was.....All the better for this song ;)
That's fucking awesome!
Feels like walking on snow.
Makes me feel like I'm lost at sea, struggling to stay afloat as I'm dragged into the abyss
3:09 I love it!
this is Persephone's theme song. i love Greek and Roman mythology, and when i heard this song for the first time i could swear i finally *felt* the stuggle of Persephone between Hades and Demeter...
Song got entirely different meaning for me after i read that myth, it is almost scary how well it goes together. Thank You!
@@VJ-td6oc i guess it is huh? i guess in a way, because i struggle so very much with the depths of serious depression and it's darkness and it's "underworld"... the story/myth of Persephone really struck a very major chord in me... with one part of me (the 'Demeter' or 'Mother' side) fighting for my happiness and wellbeing with the strength and fury of a mother fighting for her cubs, and then the other part... (the 'Hades' or dark depressive 'underworld) calling 'no she's mine'. and Persephone (the 'Gina of Whoever') in the middle the incessant tug of war that depression is... only 'Stubborn Me' will *Never* just take my place in that great below... ha. oh, and please don't thank me... i just tend to spit out whatever my mind throws at me, so thank you for seeing what i meant here, but you are welcome though? hahaha
@@ginawhoever9734 Well according to the myth i read online she didn't really have a choise, because she was enchanted by the pomegranade seeds she ate in the underworld , so she didn't really have a say in this, I mean the myth doesn't say anything about what she thinks of Hades, does she even have any feelings for him. It really shows that in that time contracted marriage was a normal thing, and that woman didn't have any say in who she want to marry to. If it is a struggle, than it would be struggle to resist the temptation of the drug and go back to her mother. She couldn't resist in the end , she said that she wants to live in the underworld, and it all ended with Zeus'es decision in her being by her husband's side half a year, and by her mother's side the other half of the year.
@@ginawhoever9734 Haha so you imagined you were that Persephone? You identified with her :D
@@VJ-td6oc yes absolutely. still do, as i still am struggling with some really dark depression sometimes. in the myth, Persephone did not know that the pomegranate seed would bind her to the "underworld", it was a trick on the part of Hades... kinda similarly, Clinical Depression does not warn you or give you a choice... the only thing you really *can* do is, as you said, try to avoid accepting or 'eating the seed' of the pomegranate when that pitch black voice in your head is trying to trick you into experiencing everything as some kind of living hell...
When I first heard this song I was driving through SC, CA - I was entering the SC forest, after nearly driving off the mountain-side road. I handled that car perfectly despite the asshole that cut me off, nearly sending me over the side.... At the moment; I wondered about it all, but the dark tree canopies diverted my attention ... What did it matter I was alive to see these lovely trees........

🖤🖤🖤
Right on :)
Una de las canciones que más me han impactado. Recuerdo tan bien el momento que me impactó. Fue a finales de 2006.
Thank you for the simple song-with-lyrics combo :) I always like these because I know they won't take a crapload of time to buffer/freeze/etc. This song has me floored, by the way. So intense.
My favorite part is "ocean pulls me close"!
YES.
Everything during and after that is amazing.
This song.. Is beautiful beyond compare.
this song is so beautiful. thank you trent for making music that never dies ❤️
Such an amazing album! Both of them are fucking incredible 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I can still feel you Paul, even so far away
This song truly is therapeutic its strange i feel like its a tune from my youth i feel so strange yet so relaxed
It's my favorite swan song at karaoke.
I mean what can I possibly sing after this masterpiece
My fave NIN track. Bleak, dark, and strangely soothing!
I feel like this song has that descent the devil took, and uses it to describe addiction using metaphors about the ocean. No one will ever be more insanely smart as Trent reznor
+aex hooder I think its a failed relationship so you see his addiction/ and or depression come back into his life
Nither of these
614 girl because he in no way says that
JD pitmint the metaphors with the ocean are metaphors about his suicidal thoughts, I think because when he wrote La Mer, he was about to attempt suicide by jumping off a cliff into the ocean, but he didn't.
Absolutely stunning
A partir del 2:10, algo se me rompe por dentro.
I would play this at my funeral, but it would depress the Hell out of the people there and make it harder for them to move on.
A great song, I think this song's ideas unfold to a great extent to my listening.
I read through the comments talking about the metaphor and poetry in this song...there is no metaphor. Reznor wrote it while on the beach at Big Sur. He was looking down from a cliff trying to find a reason not to jump. It's a beautiful song though one of my favorite by NIN

Jesus walks into a bar with 3 nails in his hand, he asks the barkeeper, can you put me up for the night?
One of the best lines from "The Crow"
@@ToxicvisionFilms And "The breakfast club."
I gotta give respect to lead singer for singing about truly embracing the dark hand that was dealt in his life. Or maybe he's just singing about the dark prince's history.
Most important song to me! All love to my brother christian!! (fil of ffl)
bittersweet
To anyone else who is sitting here on Thanksgiving feeling like this song...
DEEEPPPESTT
Commeting for the fun of it :P Great Song bro :P
I think it's my favourite NIN song, a song about reincarnation.
I was the glint in the milkmans eye!

I love you Emily Norment
Music isn't all shit today. If you actually look for some, you'll see that's it's not all terrible pop music.
I'm going to spend my last days on the boat on the British Columbian coast. I'm done 👍!
:(
Queen of the damned or the Crow. Choose one
I’m gonna cover it. Fuck it
fabulantastisch
This is a song that I see a pyramid scheme and exotic women dancing sexy for a pharo
Lol thanks for putting that thaught in ultra-vivid into my mind, I also see mustard and palmtrees.........

The rise & fall of Reginald Perrin set to music.
Some parts remind me of Mr. Big intro by 8ball and MJG
This was before Atticus correct? It really sounds like Atticus involvement on this!
Tony Sproule yes, thats before the Atticus. This is Charlie Clouser. I like to Atticus but Charlie was the best so far!
I was 4... holy crap.
Ha! Now I'm commenting!
Yeah, 52 more people agree that it's ecstasy

The great poe would've been awe struck by this glorious dark beauty.ive read alot of comments on here regarding opinions on this songs interpretation. Am i the only one that interprets it to mean hes facing his judgement day. He is being cast to hell and at the end he's refering to 'the one that got away' his true love he lost. Hes being tormented and longing for her even after death. Hell.eternal torment..shes gone to heaven or still alive..I CAN STILL FEEL YOU..EVEN SO FAR AWAY..💔
mine as well.
I can great you.......................................
Scary (Richard,Dick!?!)
This to me it's a heroin addict giving in and accepting he can't get away. I know it all to well I've been there.
It means so many things to so many people as great often does. I can relate to your interpretation.
You are not alone. Our country has what you need to recover. No methadone. Just go in the Baker Act. If you're serious..im still here for some reason.
The best thing about art is that it’s meaning isn’t objective
I was 4 and a half.
Sounds like something out of American McGee's Alice.
