- I made a playable Elden Ring Demake, mainly to practice writing some code and making animations. I hope you all enjoyed!

The PS1 environment is soooo much more immersive than realistic graphics. The old school style makes you so much more curious
It's definitely more unique and there are some cool techniques to add immersion =)
I think part of this is that realistic graphics leave no room for imagination. There's nothing to see beyond what's literally in front of you. Retro graphics are more symbolic out of necessity, relying on the viewer's mind to fill in the missing details, something our brains are very good at. You're not so much seeing the pixels on the screen anymore, when you look back on your memories of playing the game you will see actual worlds and monsters and such, not the symbolic sprites and pixels that merely represent them.
Yeah nothing says "immersion" like polygons, bland textures, and small enclosed levels
@@FlaccidFella I think it's a similar principle to the Uncanny Valley, which is where something that looks almost but not quite human triggers a revulsion response. The issue with realism is that we're constantly searching for flaws that would push it into the Uncanny Valley, and it doesn't take much to break our immersion. But if you go for something stylized that doesn't try to be realistic then our subconscious is no longer constantly on the lookout for tiny flaws, and it's easier to just accept things as they are.
If anything, going for stylization over realism works better for fantasy because we're less likely to feel the need to rationalize the fantastic things we see. If we try and fail to rationalize something, then it breaks our immersion. This could be anything from weapons too big for a normal human to wield to dragons that are too heavy to fly and have too small of wings.
It's not that lo-fi graphics are more immersive, it's that our brain understands these things are symbolic and not realistic, so instead of constantly looking for flaws that will break our immersion, it's interpreting those symbols and translating them into the concepts they represent. Instead of trying and failing to represent something perfectly, we give our brain the symbol of that thing and have it do the heavy lifting to construct a perfect representation that it won't find any flaws in because it made it itself. What brings this together is that it's doing this _instead of_ being hyper critical of everything. Not only are we tricking the brain into doing something we want, but we're also tricking it into not doing something we don't want.
Again, this isn't a knock to realistic graphics, if anything it's a testament to the skill of the people who create those models and systems that bring them to life. If they make any mistakes it can ruin the experience. It is an impressive display of their craft. The question is if it's worth the effort or not. Or perhaps whether or not it fits the specific project you're working on. There's very good reasons to use one or the other, and a lot of it is down to personal preference.

Imma be real with you. While this is of course awesome af, the smooth camera movement makes this feel more like an Elden Ring with extremely low graphics. It does not caputure the PS1 essence wholly. Could draw some inspiration from Gothic for example :) I think capturng this essence is your biggest strength especially when you dropped the first Elden Ring demake. I think this demake is to good for a PS1 game. But thats just a dude talking who does not know what he is talking about :)
I appreciate the feedback! Yeah it’s definitely smoother than an actual ps1 camera, but I just wanted to mainly focus on the graphics and shaders with this one

That is REALLY cool. 1 thing though, if you are going for PS1 you gotta have that texture wobble thing going on. Still, I would LOVE to play this version of the game

The sounds when destructing object sound like Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (PS1 version) in the first level at the burrow. Am I the only one noticing this?

I used a cascade trail particle and a trail material i made

Damn man, I'm sorry you felt you had to remove your games from download. Big companies can be real dicks some times. Is there anyway I can still have the files to play this game and others you've made? I still wanna try them out.
Real talk, if you were to take this on as a full project how hard do you think itd be and what do you think would be your biggest hills to climb? Ignoring licensing or copyright infringement, just an open(ish) world in this style with similar combat mechanics, would you ever see yourself going down that rabbit hole or would that be too big of a project for now?
As 1 person it would take 15 years

@@luisinallcaps5100 so for gamedev any unreal tutorials and some programming knowledge, for retro look you can look up how to make ps1 style shaders and how to model low poly characters
