The Spanish protesters need to be careful what they wish for, I understand the anger at the air b&b situation, however tourist spend a lot of money. Apparently in 2023 tourists spent 9,600 million euros in Barcelona. What would happen to employment if that money went elsewhere!

Yes I had that experience on fuertaventura a few months ago.
I had alot of patience but it ran out after being ignored by the waitress who only had time for her noisy local friends.
Finally slamming my hand down hard on the bar I got her attention and the whole restaurant went quiet everyone looking at me 😮.
I shouted " un vacito de vino tinto........cuando puedas "
I got my wine in seconds from the angry and embarrassed waitress.
She only had time for her noisy local friends who came in after me.

One can only hope that Spain gets a reputation as "Tourist-unfriendly". For different reasons that happened to Tunesia and it is dead for tourism, Egypty had it happen for a while. Spain can't afford to push tourists away. This is playing with fire.

@@user-rb2qw5in7y They want tourists but teh city governments have allowed owners of apartment complexes to convert them into holiday rentals. That makes much more money for the owners but it does remove living space for locals. If cities were to offer affordable living spaces not too far outside the cities locals would not mind, IMHO

Stuart the Politicians are deflecting blame away from themselves by blaming the Tourists for their failure to manage the housing situation in Spain. It’s an old trick and I am surprised the locals are so weak minded as to fall for it, in fact you will probably find they are not locals at all! Great show as ever! 👏

I am angry with the Madrid politicans for allowing vulture companies like the US Elix Rental Housing to come in and buy up buildings, turning them into tourist apartments... residents given little time to find other housing for which they cannot afford. It is also frustrating to see when tourist come and pay outrageous prices... it´s the supply and demand tango.

I rented airbnbs many times in different parts of Spain and in every case they were owned by Spanish nationals. So should tourists really be blamed? Its an easier target because they are walking around in plain sight. And quite right, Government have never controlled this properly, but anything bringing in the buck will probably be let be.

Barcelona and Catalunya forget what the tourists bring to its economy. How much money have the tourists contributed to their cathedral "La Sagrada Familia" over the years? If you wish to book a ticket online, costs 47 € per Person with tour and not having to queue. That is just one price! With 3.2 million visitors per annum, do the math. El Prado in Madrid has about 2.9 million visitors (min.35€), Alhambra in Granada has 2.3 million (19€ complete visit). Where would these magnificent places be without the money from tourists?

A lot of this is due to respect. A lot of tourists show no respect to the locals. Its a problem when you mix residents and holiday makers in the same road/apartments. We have been kept awake many many times. Not funny when you have work the next day. Also youngsters that get drunk run into local streets and the balconies drunk and wearing no . They do not need to carry on like this. The governments and councils should have nipped it in the bud years ago. Once it gets a hold its difficult to stop.

My wife and daughter went to Malaga a month they a great time. They stayed in a hotel ate in local restaurants and drank in the bars isn't this good for Malaga?
As for Barcelona it has less tourists (10 million) than London (16 million) plus London has a population of over 8 million and Barcelona 1.6 million.
Don't blame the tourists or assault them and ruin their holiday take it up with National or Local governments they decide on how many they to allow to visit.

  • @LouiseBrace

The reality is approx 1% of all housing in Barcelona is dedicated to short-term lets. Back in 2014, the local government capped tourist licences at 10k, although there are probably around 15k in total. However, there are around 75,000 empty homes in Barcelona and no real plan in place for social housing. The city’s active tourist apartments create taxes and provide jobs, unfortunately Jaume Collboni is trying to win votes through trying to push through a ban which could wipe out around 40% of tourist accommodation in the city and potentially 4-5% of the city’s GDP would fall. I work in the sector of short-term lets, and have been writing about holiday rental regulations in Spain since they were introduced in 2016 on a national level. Banning this type of tourist accommodation is not the solution to bringing down rents and creating affordable housing options.

I suppose if Spain doesn't want tourists it will leave more room for migrants. I thought tourism was a major part of Spain's income but it Spain is now so rich it doesn't need tourists then that's up to them I suppose.

The "real" Spain, outside of big tourist cities, is a wasteland of unemployment. You can't complain about tourism, when it's your LARGEST ECONOMIC SECTOR, making up 12% of your GDP and 11% of employment. So what will happen when Spain pushed away tourists? They're going to face the economic weakness of their country.

The local might only have time to grab a quick bite before heading back to work.

I have a lots of sympathy for the people of Barcelona. That's because I am from Amsterdam, also a city which has to cope with a lots of tourist & the English. Funny, how the measures are meant against tourists in general, but the English think it's only meant against them. You are right when primarly you consider the politicians being responsible for housing problems. But the English seems don't to understand how to behave themselves as a guests in a foreign country. (Just like Australians in Bali.) More laughable are the English tabloids. Remember during the process leading up to Brexit, these tabloids were convinced that Spain needed the English more than vice versa. So getting rid of those pesky English is really a Brexit advantage. And about going to Greece, well it's still the EU. Perhaps returning the stolen Parthenon Marbles could soften their attitude. 😃

Stu, your reaction, defensive, towards the gentleman who told you to stop giving people advice not to eat spam, was inconsistent and self-contradictory to the point of being unintentionally funny. You tell people not to take any advice from you about nutrition, but then why say it? Why tell people not to eat spam if you don’t want them to listen to you because you’re not an expert on nutrition?, you don’t seem to know what’s in spam, you just know that it is bad, but you can’t tell us what’s in it. So you’ve heard that it is bad, and it looks like it’s bad, but you don’t really know, so at least you could talk about the ingredients and the percentage of fat or carbohydrates or its nutritional value, you could read right off the can but you didn’t do that. This guy says he doesn’t want you criticizing spam. you have an audience that listens to you, whether or not you have any expert knowledge in nutrition. You opine quite a bit about Spanish politics. Now I don’t think you’re an expert on Spanish politics, but I’m interested in listening to what you say as an expat because you have lived there for quite a few years.. So you betrayed your ignorance about this beloved product as well as saying don’t eat it, but don’t listen to me, which makes absolutely no sense. It was a convoluted stew of self contradiction
