Great video but number #4 is bit more nuanced than that. I have covered songs with a much slower tempo than the original, not in the same key and even changing the melody here and there, but still got a copyright claim on them. Even some of them got a “manual claim”, meaning the claim was made by the original artist or label, not through contentID. It's also a lottery. I have covered songs from barely known indie artists (their original music video has no more than 3,000 views) and got a copyright claim while the video was not even finished uploading, and I have covered moderately popular songs (like 15 millions views on the original artist's music video) and still haven't had copyright claims on them. One of my old cover songs got a copyright claim 6 YEARS after being uploaded on UA-cam... I’m also still confused about why labels do claim all the revenues on a UA-cam cover when the original artist actually only owns the Composition but NOT the Master Recording (the performer/producer owns the Master Recording). Ad revenues should be split 50/50. The only way to get away with that is to get a synchronization license but usually hard to get, and expensive as you mentioned it. Ahhhh, greedy record companies…

Look people, covering a song is not complicated. Firstly go to the Performance Rights Organisation in your territory and get the mechanical licence. APRA/AMCOS looks after Australia and PRS/MCPS in the UK. Google it and you’ll find them. Mechanical rights costs around $100 or thereabouts for 1000 copies or a certain amount of streams. They also have information for UA-cam and others. You can also go direct to the publisher for the sync licence and they also will have a simplified process because they do not want millions of UA-camrs calling them every day for licences. The amount will be similar to the mechanical rate and if you’re only doing a UA-cam cover they will have a specific rate for that. Basically ask and you’ll get the licence. You will pay a small fee for it but you can offset that with the revenue you’ll get from UA-cam and sell your cover on your site. All the best.
Heather Rocks!! I didn't know about the music policy section. I LOVE singing song covers, but I don't do it on UA-cam... Who knows, maybe one day I'll give it a try! LOL. Cheers!

@@iancorzine again you are wrong, the customers are in control of youtube. And that is because the customers can cover and promote the very content they are interested in. hmm what to do with that eh UA-cam?
Hi Ian, I have a serious question but 1st I'd like to thank you for sharing these videos. They're super informative! Okay, so I currently provide digital marketing services for a Dj/Music Remixer that has only been using Soundcloud to share his work. In simple terms, he is fearful of uploading his mixes/remixes to UA-cam, Facebook, and Instagram due to these platforms being super strict on the issue of copyright infringement. We get why they're like that, and we want to abide by these policies WHILE BEING ABLE TO USE THE MUSIC/CONTENT. So here's what we need to know: 1) HOW can he PURCHASE/access the necessary LICENSES to MUSIC/CONTENT for REUSE/MODIFICATION within his mixes? 2) If we somehow obtain these licenses, how can we use them outside of mixes/remixes? & 3) If it is that licenses to music/content are not readily sold to DJs and other producers of derivative content, how would you go about uploading mixes/remixes without facing strikes from these platforms -- UA-cam, Facebook, & Instagram? Feel free to respond here, or email me at ChevannesComm[@]gmail[.]com PS: I think this would also make a great topic for your next youtube video.
Hey Romario! Thanks for watching 👊😀 Well, one way to get music licenses to copyrighted music for a reasonable price is Song Freedom -- I made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/5s-x-pnI0bc/v-deo.html SongFreedom generally allows you to use their licenses for any non-commercial purpose. If you cannot find the license you need, then you really need to TRANSFORM the music (i.e., change instrumentation through use of stems, change lyrics, comment directly on music, make substantial changes to the music itself) In short, you need to make the music your own. I always think of 3LAU's "All Night Long" He converted to LMFAO and Ellie Goulding's songs into his own songs -- that is ART. Check it out -- do this and you will not get copyright strikes.
@@iancorzine haha "make it your own", even though you just wanted to make a cover tune. hahaha. how much bull shit can the human race endure, i often wonder.
It all comes back to whether you have permission to use the "sheet music" publicly. You may have purchased the sheet music for personal use, but once you share it to the public (on social media) then the copyright police take notice. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching. 👊😁
Ian Corzine I’m making reference to putting together my own sheet music for a song. Basically, listening to the song and then writing the sheet music from there.
No, no, no, no!!! Mere attribution is not enough. You must have permission to use whatever material that is not your own. Otherwise you will either get a copyright claim OR a strike. It doesn't matter if you want to make money off of it or not. You must always have permission, or bad things will happen. 😬
Based on what I gather from the video, if UA-cam content ID doesn’t recognize your cover, you are good to go. And according to the video you could even monetize that cover video.
@@iancorzine okay, so how do I get permission? And how much does it cost? Is it yet another bullshit system where I have to pay thousands of dollars out of my pocket for a song I want to cover and have the privilege to upload to my channel where it generates about 50 views in 3 years? How convenient! So fucking happy I've reduced my musical activity from full time working musician to a hobby in 2020 because, in this business, there is no "middle class": you either make nothing or you make millions. HEATHER ROCKS thanks for the video. Unfortunately the music policies isn't present on the new youtube dashboard. and on the classic dashboard, it doesn't work.
Hey Ian, I got a question. I hope you read this one: "Can I use an instrumental of a specific song to make a cover out of it? For example, Eminem's slim Shady, then I'll just use instrumental, but I'll sing the song with his lyrics. Is that okay?
Man that’s a good question I’m trying to figure that out as well I want to use that exact instrumental to a song by completely change the lyrics. I will attribute the song to the person and I’m sure you will with your slim shady song but I don’t know if I have to change the instrument or somehow because I have no way of doing that and don’t know how. I’m sure this is your problem as well let me know what you figure out
Yes you can , I’ll my covers are using the original beat ,just know that the artist the song belongs to will run ads on your video and you will not get paid.
I've just uploaded a cover and done all the instruments myself, but I've pretty much matched the tempo exactly and even the guitar sound, so from what you said in the video, would that be the reason why I'm only getting shared revenue? as it's too much like the original? I've even disputed it but they refused :/
Hey DC! Thanks for watching 👊😃 Yes. Just because YT allows you to make covers of the songs in the Music Policies section does not mean that the original artist cannot claim the revenue. That is the yin-yang of covers -- you get more views BUT you may lose the ad sense.
thank you guys for giving us a tip., well I have one question aside from that., now if we're gonna using the Leonilli Richie backing track and play a guitar solo is it okay?? thank you in advance guys..
You must have permission otherwise you will get a copyright claim or worse -- a strike. You cannot have any music playing on your video that you do not have permission to use. You may want to watch some of my other videos so fully understand this. Thanks for watching. 👊😀
Hello! I just have one question, what if I want to make a cover of a song that is covered by a lot of people but on the music policies it says this song is not available for use? Would I still be able to get away with it if I transform the song into my own version or is it not recommended at all? Thank you! Love your videos ((:
Heather Rocks! PS. This is a way to keep videos interactive by getting people to comment. And a great way for you to ensure your audience is actually understand your content. Thanks for all the great info you guys gave me and I wish you two success!
No, you do not need a license, buy you should have the artist give you written permission that you can show to everyone that it is legit. You still may run into some hackers who say the material is there's, but with the permission, you should be able to prevail. Good luck and please let me know if you have any other questions. 👊😀
Hi Heidi (& Baby)!! 👏🏻😁 Here is the video I made in response to Article 13 passing last week: ua-cam.com/video/-N89yuDsWXo/v-deo.html. Let me know if you have any questions after watching it.
Interesting. I dont care though because I won’t monetize covers. It’s only to bring in subs. Once I’m over 1k, I’ll switch up my game to monetize from my own content
I have gotten strikes for doing covers and i did not monetize and at that time it was not even possible to monetize in my country. So what is with that? I am doing a totaly new channel now cause on the old one i have strikes but on this one I do not want to have problems cause maybe in the future I would monetize. So if I write under the description the authors of the songs is that anough or should I do more? I am confused. English is not my first language.
Ian Corzine Yessir! I was in two different bands for about 7 years. Played drums in one, and was lead singer in the other. Everything from southern rock to old country music.
... So if I create an instrumental cover (piano) for example “ Faded by Alan Walker”, so it won’t be pick up by the Content ID system? So therefore any ad revenue from that cover song will belong to me??
Hey B Sun! Thanks for watching 👊😃 It is very possible that Contend I.D. will pick up today, tomorrow, or three years from now -- it is always scanning. But if it does not, then yes, you would continue to get ad revenue, unless an original artist makes a copyright claim -- you may lose your money rights then BUT sometimes, they never do because they like your version. 🙂
@@iancorzine how synthesia software "piano tutorials" with millions of views work? They can not get permission from entire world composers but they fully make whatewer they want , new songs every day. How they do this? Same like with the full movies, some users are able to upload full movies without problems, and i am sure they do not have permission of thousends of movies or music producers
I invite every lawyer out there hiding under rocks to notify me when I "fail" to help another artist to succeed by pouring my heart into covering (advertising) their song. bring it on. I'll see you in court.
Unfortunately it is more about copyright laws. ☹ Covers definitely advertise for songs, but using material that you do not have permission to use is the bigger issue. I know it's sad, but it's the law. Go ahead....say it!! 👊😀

Heather Rocks! This was so helpful!
Heathe Freaking Rocks, tho i don't so i need to take it bit slower
Hey there!! Thanks for watching. Yes, Heather does rock!! 😁👊
Cool to see a video with you and Heather Ian. Thanks for sharing. Good to know some details about this.
Yep, I'm somewhat familiar. I get flagged sometimes, haven't gotten any strikes.
Ian Corzine Hello Ian,you mean losing the ad sense completely or just some?
So awesome of you to provide that checklist - always nice to know you have all the steps covered!
@@iancorzine haha totally!! Yours are always so great!
For real though I should do a song for fun.
Do it!
Heather Rocks!!!!!! @IanCorzine 👍❤️🎶YOU and Beautiful Ms. Heather are AmAziNG 😉!!! Thank you 😊 for these great Tips!!!
thank you guys for giving us a tip., well I have one question aside from that., now if we're gonna using the Leonilli Richie backing track and play a guitar solo is it okay?? thank you in advance guys..
You must have permission otherwise you will get a copyright claim or worse -- a strike. You cannot have any music playing on your video that you do not have permission to use. You may want to watch some of my other videos so fully understand this. Thanks for watching. 👊😀
Heather rocks!
Yes!! Heather does rock!! Thanks for watching. 👊😀
@@iancorzine thx to you!!!
Happy new year btw
Hello! I just have one question, what if I want to make a cover of a song that is covered by a lot of people but on the music policies it says this song is not available for use? Would I still be able to get away with it if I transform the song into my own version or is it not recommended at all? Thank you! Love your videos ((:
Yes that's allowed
Heather rockssss!!! Thank you so much I really need this😊❤️
wow YOU GUYS ROCK - QUESTION Can I PLAY youtube karaoke at a bar and sing the songs - what are the Do's and DON'Ts
You can always sing karaoke at a bar, but you cannot post it to UA-cam!! UA-cam will pick up the song and give you a strike for it. 😲👊
@@iancorzine then every subscriber should post a karaoke cover to UA-cam "simultaneously" and put UA-cam out of business. that would be my response.
Heather Rocks! PS. This is a way to keep videos interactive by getting people to comment. And a great way for you to ensure your audience is actually understand your content. Thanks for all the great info you guys gave me and I wish you two success!
What if i know the artist n asked the permission in social media maybe n he approved it, do i still need to get a license?
No, you do not need a license, buy you should have the artist give you written permission that you can show to everyone that it is legit. You still may run into some hackers who say the material is there's, but with the permission, you should be able to prevail. Good luck and please let me know if you have any other questions. 👊😀
Heather Rocks. Ok Ian does too. You guys had way too much fun making this video and it was full of great info. Rock on and thanks. BOSSES❤️
Any updates since article 13?
Hi Heidi (& Baby)!! 👏🏻😁 Here is the video I made in response to Article 13 passing last week: ua-cam.com/video/-N89yuDsWXo/v-deo.html. Let me know if you have any questions after watching it.
@@iancorzine thank you! I guess I'm still a little confused about cover songs specifically, I live in America if that makes a difference.
Heather Rocks!!! also im taking notes Thank you for making this
Interesting. I dont care though because I won’t monetize covers. It’s only to bring in subs. Once I’m over 1k, I’ll switch up my game to monetize from my own content
😁
I have gotten strikes for doing covers and i did not monetize and at that time it was not even possible to monetize in my country. So what is with that? I am doing a totaly new channel now cause on the old one i have strikes but on this one I do not want to have problems cause maybe in the future I would monetize. So if I write under the description the authors of the songs is that anough or should I do more? I am confused. English is not my first language.
Heather Rocks!!!! Great video! Very useful information. Thanks for sharing this.
Ian Corzine Yessir! I was in two different bands for about 7 years. Played drums in one, and was lead singer in the other. Everything from southern rock to old country music.

HEATHER ROCKS!!! HEART!!! IAN IS AWESOME!!!
Thank you, both of you, for this fun, informative, and upbeat video! Absolutely needed this. Cheers!
😊❤👍
Cool one 👍 let's grow together!
👊😀
is there an update to this video ? Since UA-cam removed “music policies”
HEATHER ROCKS!!!
Heather rocks!💚 am i right on spelling? Hahahahaha
Filipina youtuber here...
Hey Camille! Thanks so much for watching 👊😀 Yeah, you got the spelling correct! Are you a musician? Post any covers to UA-cam?
Ahm not really i used only audio for background music on my transitions
You may want to check out this video to avoid any copyright issues in the future. bit.ly/2TmY8oX Good luck!! ☘
Great video, great info

Thank you. 😀
So fun! Great energy!!!
So can i play any song in youtube on piano without permission and still not get in trouble If i dont have ads?
Hey Niilo! Thanks for watching 👊😃 No, you should stick with what UA-cam allows in the "Music Policies" section of the website.
More gifts? Yay!

😁👊
you tube studio has changed. How do you do it now in 2022?
I invite every lawyer out there hiding under rocks to notify me when I "fail" to help another artist to succeed by pouring my heart into covering (advertising) their song. bring it on. I'll see you in court.
Unfortunately it is more about copyright laws. ☹ Covers definitely advertise for songs, but using material that you do not have permission to use is the bigger issue. I know it's sad, but it's the law. Go ahead....say it!! 👊😀
@@iancorzine laws evolve just like the music industry. penalizing consumers doesn't work.
I'm so glad you talked about attribution too. As a former muscian... I really appreciated that! What a great video! Elizabeth :)
What jumped into my mind was the chorus to Carol King's "Beautiful" .. ua-cam.com/video/6ZC17DIsDaQ/v-deo.html... @@iancorzine :D
