I'm 69, but my father used to tell about going to the movie theater when he was a kid and watching the serials each week. His favorite actor was Buster Crabbe.. I think I spelled his name right. When I was young there was a TV station which would show some of the old serials on Saturday mornings, we would watch them together and he would tell about life as a young kid growing up in the San Francisco bay area.
What a treat to see the "Pink Palace" before developments, and Kaimana Beach with the original surfers including Duke Kahanamoku, long boards, and canoes. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov would be justifiably pissed to hear his "Flight of the Bumblebee" as the background for a film about a green hornet, but that's another story. An excellent standout in the realm of serials....a great cast.....and a reasonable plot. Thank you for archiving and posting.
THANK YOU! I've owned and loved "Strikes Again," the sequel to the first Green Hornet serial, on VHS (so you now know how far I go back :)). Finally watching the original chapterplay here has brought me back to this. I have loved Saturday afternoon movie serials--the original live-action superhero movies!--ever since I discovered them as a '70s kid, when WNET, New York's public television station used to air "Flash Gordon" chapters and PBS nationally had a show in the early '80s called "Matinee at the Bijou," which did the whole 1930s matinee cartoon-music/comedy segment-serial-movie lineup.

I was enthralled by these kinds of movies when I was a kid. I would wait with bated breath for next week's serial followup for Lash LaRue , and also the westerns with Johnny Mack Brown , Randolph Scott and others. Of course later on in the late 1940's there would be Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Of course I also looked forward to listening to Charlie Chan, Sargent Preston and Yukon King , Oh , oh, oh, and who could forget listening to " The Shadow " ? " Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men ? THE SHADOW KNOWS " , followed by a haunting laugh which would send chills racing up and down my spine. I think that kids of today are missing a lot without the old radio shows. Kids today have everything laid out for them in the movies and videos. It's all visual for them. But the old radio shows only had sound effects. So we had to think and imagine various conditions for our selves. How different it is today. On Sunday , my father would give me a quarter to go to the movies. I would add to that by collecting beer bottles from the parking area next to Andy's Tavern across the street from where I lived. I returned the bottles to collect the deposit. $0.02 for each bottle. So , with a few minutes of work I would have $0.20 or $0.30. Plus my quarter. A veritable fortune in hand. The movie cost $0.12 to get in. So , I would have more than enough money to then shop at the penny candy counter. The penny candy ranged in value from a penny each up to as many as ten for a penny. With judicial choosing I could have a fair sized paper sack full of candy. Once in a while I would treat myself to some wrapped candy. Perhaps a Baby Ruth or maybe a Fifth Avenue. Very expensive at $0.05 each ! Next a bag of popcorn and a drink and I was all set for the movies. First the news reels. It was like being at Elizabeth's wedding. And then when she was Crowned as the Queen. Both very impressive with much pomp and ceremony. I've seen news films of the Atomic Bomb explosions. If that does not get your attention , nothing will. Oh those poor people in Japan ! How could President Truman do that to those women and children ? Of course now I am an old adult and I understand that Truman was a Democrat. Dropping the Atomic Bomb on those people was to be expected of him. Following the news reels would be the cartoons. Usually three cartoons. Laughter to follow the serious news reels ? Following the cartoons would be the weekly serial movie. Often it was Lash LaRue which would end with a cliff hanger. Come back next week to find out what happened next. And then , finally , the two main features. By then it was about five o'clock and time to go home.
I had an old 8-track of old radio shows. I tried putting myself in the mind of a child back then hunkered down by the old Philco radio and listening to The Shadow.
We collected pop bottles. Kids were not allowed to return beer bottles. It was more than just the 2 cents each, it was walking along the road and out on the paths, and in the woods. I miss the walking most of all. I often reflect on how our parents told us to never take candy from a stranger or accept a ride in a car and then sent us off to learn, with the trust family dog of course!!! We used to walk to the theatre to save the bus fare. It was only 3 or 4 miles. LOL That was the part of the day I remember best. Walking, goofing off and worrying if Captain Marvel had survived the week!!
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of these serials from when l was about 8, used to watch them on a Saturday morning and never stopped. Please keep up the great work
