  • 1. 1 My people, listen to my words:
    Pay heed to what I say.
    2 I’ll illustrate my speech, I’ll tell
    The meaning of things past.
    3 We’ve heard and known these things before:
    Our fathers taught them us;
    4 We will not hide them from their sons,
    But teach our young ones now.
    2. We’ll tell GOD’s worthy deeds, His pow’r,
    The wonders which we saw.
    5 For He to Jacob gave a rule,
    To Israel a law:
    He bade our fathers teach their sons,
    So GOD’s deeds they’d know well,
    6 And so that children yet unborn
    Their sons in turn would tell.
    3. 7 Thus they would put their confidence
    In God Himself alone;
    And, not forgetting all His deeds,
    Would keep all His commands.
    8 And not be like their fathers were,
    A stubborn, rebel race
    Which was not right in heart with God,
    And faithless to Him proved.
    21. 65 The Lord awoke as from a sleep,
    A hero, cheered by wine.
    66 He struck their enemies from behind,
    Put them to lasting shame.
    67 Then He rejected Joseph’s tent;
    He chose not Ephraim.
    68 His choice He set on Judah’s tribe,
    Mount Zion which He loved.
    22. 69 His holy place He built up high,
    Like earth to last always.
    70 He David, as His servant, chose,
    Took him from tending sheep.
    71 He cared for Jacob, God’s own flock:
    Israel, God’s very own.
    72 He tended them with blameless heart,
    Led them with skillful hands.
