As an old-world aeromodeller, I'm just astounded that you can do all this with no actual plan, no jigs, no mess- and spotless hands, too.... I have a lot to learn.!
That's in large part thanks to CAD software, laser cutters, 3D Printers and some camera magic 😆 There was plenty of mess just off camera. I spent a good bit of time cleaning up after each day of recording/building.
I am unable to digest the fact that you are making rc plane in a tidy environment (which most builders keep dreaming of 😂), you have multi-angle camera setup and studio lighting 😍, your CAD model videos are explained in a way they can be done by anyone 😇. There is so much to learn from your hard work that goes in making the aircraft and the videos. This is called quality content. KUDOS my friend!

@@RCCAD2VR it had 4 hydraulic systems, ok 747 has it also, DC-10 only 3. It had a advanced flight control system with DLC Direct Lift Control, in landing face aircraft has to follow glide slop, this they do with engine power and elevators, 1011 controlled it with spoilers deflection, over glide slop, spoilers go out, under glide slop spoilers go in, constant powersetting and no elevators moving. Old time aircraft had cables controling flight control actuators, that reqest adjustment. 1011 had pre tension cables that was factory adjusted. I coul write a vhole day about the aircraft, i have also worked from Convair 340/440 and Fokker F28 up to DC10. Doors could be opened without electric power, by emergency open from outsider without deploy of slide, no resetting just close with power. Activ control of aileron to reduse wingload and turbulence, Airbus introduced that on A320.

I really like the quality of design that you've put into this model. The tab-slot method of assembly, or in some cases - half-rounds - to ensure the pieces align properly. The little things to limit accidents during construction.

Halfway through adding the longerons, I thought something was wrong because it was pulling to the port side, however, after adding the longerons to the Starboard side, it was 100% true. Whew! I've been designing my for RC plane on freecad and I'm pleased to see that I'm on the right track. My first one is much smaller than this and I don't even care if it fly's or not, I'll just be glad to learn something from it. Seeing this build has given me lots of ideas though.
So impressed with your technology of making rc tristar model. I have been making rc planes for long time with balsa wood and fibre glass. But I never saw this type of technology of making jet airliner like L 10 11.
I'm not even into flying RC but your content is incredible. While I'll probably never build one myself I can appreciate the hard work that you've put into this project. From one aviation enthusiast to another, great work! Can't wait for the next update!
Hey there! Thank you!! Oh man you have no idea. Parts that take 2 minutes to put together take 30 minutes to set up, double check focus, shoot, add another angle, repeat, and move on to the next. The gear bay alone section took 2 days to shoot. Totally worth it tho! I really want to bring people into the details of the project as best I can and maybe get some more people back into the hobby. How's your latest build going?

My project is kind of left behind, because of my own Architectural Design college projects, I have to make models for my own design too and I have really less time to get those things done eventually not getting time to work on my Airplane Maybe I'll start working on it next month, semester holidays starts!
Yeah, it's definitely a lot of work. Sounds to me like you're keeping pretty busy! You're plane isn't going anywhere, it'll be waiting for you when you get some time away from school.
@@RCCAD2VR yeah, the Airplane is totally healthy anyway from all climate till now, especially the fuselage (once vinyled it's weather proof, for which I'm really proud off!, this is the only model didn't get any cold weather damage) , considering Bangalore's climate here in India. Hopefully I'll be back on the model soon
This is fantastic man! It looks like a really fun build. I also watch the Ramy r/c guy. But I’m sure as you know he does mostly all composite. I enjoyed both. I was a yacht builder here in Maine for over 25 years. So I have worked with absolutely everything! I have been building models for 54 years. I am happy to have live long enough to see 3-D printing and this new AutoCAD whatever 😂 designing change the hobby. Believe me I’m impressed, or I wouldn’t have stopped to say cheers!🍻

@@RCCAD2VR I meant to say 50 years. But still that’s a long time. I started off with stick and tissue when I was five. I have done some composite and wooden boats. My airplanes are a mix of built-up wood, ARF’s, composits, and foamies. I am also into helicopters. I started flying RC in 1979.
That's awesome!! I've considered getting in to RC boat design and building sometime down the road. Seems like something I would enjoy. Helis is a whole other ballgame altogether. Do you find more people are getting into it, or have quadcopters sucked the air out of the room?
@@RCCAD2VR i’m afraid the interest is just going away with kids playing video games and shit like that. A lot of people do have drones. And there has never been a huge interest in my state towards helicopters. The market may be picking up. Not like it is in the cities.

Just a simple little note, I'm sure you know, but you may want to make sure that Lock Tight does not affect the 3D printed parts. It will destroy other types of similar materials. I had to learn the hard way that it needs to be used on nothing but metal to metal parts. Lol Beautiful design and beautiful model. I love the old Whisper Liner. Such a Classic and historic aircraft, in more ways than one. So much new technology came out when this classic hit the lines.
Yup, I am aware of the Loctite plastic interaction. I've recently switched to the plastics safe 425 formula they have. The L-1011 is definitely a one of a kind airliner. The Whisper Liner was a bit ironic, since those engines had such a distinctive an aggressive roar. I sat near that back on my last L-1011 flight, and even in the late 90's it was noticeably quieter than other planes I had flown on, but the sound still made you take note. Beautifully designed aircraft and very well filmed and edited. Keep up the excellent work! (Please be aware that Loctite is known to eat into plastic and make it brittle, better use locknuts when using metal screws in plastic).

@@RCCAD2VR since it is a top flite brand that i bought from ebay it didn't come with any hardware or especially the tail gear bracket. The plastic bracket was easy now i got to buy a steel rod and cut and bend it.
That's a nice build, I am still not completely sure about using 3d printed parts in builds but it seems like it has come a long way and I might start doing it on my next build. Have been working on (hand) drawing a MQ-9 for a long time but you convinced me to scrap that and go draw it up in fusion. Would be interested in an in dept video about aerofoil selection, that was something that has been holding me back for a long time.
Hey there! Thank you and welcome to the world of CAD! Hope it is going well so far. 3D printed parts can be far more durable than any wood you have on the plane if you use the right material and orient the design and printing process towards their strengths. I'm using filaments that are just shy of aluminum strength. They are moderately pricy though but allow for parts to be designed specifically for their application. Airfoils is a huge topic, if I can find an expert on the subject to help steer me a bit on this, I'd gladly make a video about it. Cheers!
Brilliant craftsmanship! The L1011 is my most favorite of all airliners. Is this the 500 series and if so is it possible to extend the fuselage to the 250 series?

Hi Chris! Woot Woot, great to hear you loved this episode! It was a major haul getting this video created, but so excited to have it out in the wild for everyone to enjoy. As for the iterations, I'm shocked to say, this is the first and only one. I learned a ton from the center fuselage build and applied those lessons to this section and it worked. The beauty of CAD, hard lessons, and a little bit of luck. There was only one longeron that I had to be recut because of an imperfection in the wood that caused about 3mm to disintegrate in the interior of the lamination. Let's hope the next part goes as smoothly. 🤞

Firstly.. do you allow any tolerances to your tab slots...or do you print both at he same dimension and fettle if required? Will you use a jig at some point to ensure the sections are straight...or do you relay on the accuracy of the parts and assume straightness? cheers Geoff
Hey there Geoff! firstly, thanks for watching! The tab slot tolerances are taken care of during cutting by setting the kerf value. This provides a good snug fit. The trick however is the variances in the wood thickness, which I learned the hard way in the first build, where one sheet was .7mm too thick. This go around I measure the sheets before buying them using a caliper. The frame is very much true on its own, but I will use jigs when it comes time to sheeting and planking. The fuselage is so long, that it will need to be held in place through that process.
I've watched all of your series and am anxiously waiting for the part when the plane building gets beyond the frame works and gets built into one entity and even probably gets to that stage of taking to the air. Are we ever going to see that here on UA-cam ?

Hey, has anyone ever tried doing this out of steel ? Like 3mm stainless? I have access to an industrial laser cutter and welder. You could tack together the pieces using a Tig welder instead of where your gluing. Would be way heavier tho , gonna need some real power to get it off the ground

😆 Yeah, those pesky timezones! It didn't help that I was late as well. Wanted to have it done by 3pm PST but it ended up being 8pm. I have not weighed it yet... which reminds me, I need to get a scale. I can say that it's lighter than I thought it would be so far.

Much appreciated Edgar, glad you like! I use Fusion 360's animation feature to create the drawings, then import the PDF files into InDesign to put the manual together. It's a slow process for sure, but it's the best method I've found.

Im an old manufacturing engineer so I expect drawings to show the finished product, so when I decided to print my cockpit I drew it out as I wanted the finished part to look,ie the wall thickness was set at 1 - 2 mm thickness, butas its only the outside thats important, do I gave to think in a different way and in thois case forget about the inside letting the printer define this, and that I should have made the wall thickness and web thickness say 0.05mm instead?
Hey there -- I'm not 100% sure what you are asking, but I assume you are wanting to know how I approached the 3D printed part of the nose. I use the exterior dimension and thicken the walls inward.

That is a - 500. I was working on L1011-500 back in 2000 as a mechanic, I loved this aircraft, easy to worh with and state of art

Yeah, it's definitely a lot of work. Sounds to me like you're keeping pretty busy! You're plane isn't going anywhere, it'll be waiting for you when you get some time away from school.
@@RCCAD2VR yeah, the Airplane is totally healthy anyway from all climate till now, especially the fuselage (once vinyled it's weather proof, for which I'm really proud off!, this is the only model didn't get any cold weather damage) , considering Bangalore's climate here in India. Hopefully I'll be back on the model soon

This is fantastic man! It looks like a really fun build. I also watch the Ramy r/c guy. But I’m sure as you know he does mostly all composite. I enjoyed both. I was a yacht builder here in Maine for over 25 years. So I have worked with absolutely everything! I have been building models for 54 years. I am happy to have live long enough to see 3-D printing and this new AutoCAD whatever 😂 designing change the hobby. Believe me I’m impressed, or I wouldn’t have stopped to say cheers!🍻

@@RCCAD2VR I meant to say 50 years. But still that’s a long time. I started off with stick and tissue when I was five. I have done some composite and wooden boats. My airplanes are a mix of built-up wood, ARF’s, composits, and foamies. I am also into helicopters. I started flying RC in 1979.
That's awesome!! I've considered getting in to RC boat design and building sometime down the road. Seems like something I would enjoy. Helis is a whole other ballgame altogether. Do you find more people are getting into it, or have quadcopters sucked the air out of the room?
@@RCCAD2VR i’m afraid the interest is just going away with kids playing video games and shit like that. A lot of people do have drones. And there has never been a huge interest in my state towards helicopters. The market may be picking up. Not like it is in the cities.

Just a simple little note, I'm sure you know, but you may want to make sure that Lock Tight does not affect the 3D printed parts. It will destroy other types of similar materials. I had to learn the hard way that it needs to be used on nothing but metal to metal parts. Lol Beautiful design and beautiful model. I love the old Whisper Liner. Such a Classic and historic aircraft, in more ways than one. So much new technology came out when this classic hit the lines.
Yup, I am aware of the Loctite plastic interaction. I've recently switched to the plastics safe 425 formula they have. The L-1011 is definitely a one of a kind airliner. The Whisper Liner was a bit ironic, since those engines had such a distinctive an aggressive roar. I sat near that back on my last L-1011 flight, and even in the late 90's it was noticeably quieter than other planes I had flown on, but the sound still made you take note. @@RCCAD2VR since it is a top flite brand that i bought from ebay it didn't come with any hardware or especially the tail gear bracket. The plastic bracket was easy now i got to buy a steel rod and cut and bend it.

That's a nice build, I am still not completely sure about using 3d printed parts in builds but it seems like it has come a long way and I might start doing it on my next build.
Have been working on (hand) drawing a MQ-9 for a long time but you convinced me to scrap that and go draw it up in fusion.
Would be interested in an in dept video about aerofoil selection, that was something that has been holding me back for a long time.
Hey there! Thank you and welcome to the world of CAD! Hope it is going well so far. 3D printed parts can be far more durable than any wood you have on the plane if you use the right material and orient the design and printing process towards their strengths. I'm using filaments that are just shy of aluminum strength. They are moderately pricy though but allow for parts to be designed specifically for their application. Airfoils is a huge topic, if I can find an expert on the subject to help steer me a bit on this, I'd gladly make a video about it. Cheers!

Brilliant craftsmanship! The L1011 is my most favorite of all airliners. Is this the 500 series and if so is it possible to extend the fuselage to the 250 series?

It's been a real test getting this designed and built to this point :) This was originally supposed to be the 500, but the diagrams I used to start the design was actually the from the 200 series, so this is has ended up being the longer fuse version :) Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

Hi Chris! Woot Woot, great to hear you loved this episode! It was a major haul getting this video created, but so excited to have it out in the wild for everyone to enjoy. As for the iterations, I'm shocked to say, this is the first and only one. I learned a ton from the center fuselage build and applied those lessons to this section and it worked. The beauty of CAD, hard lessons, and a little bit of luck. There was only one longeron that I had to be recut because of an imperfection in the wood that caused about 3mm to disintegrate in the interior of the lamination. Let's hope the next part goes as smoothly. 🤞

Hi Terrance.. another great instalment... A couple of questions, if i may... Firstly.. do you allow any tolerances to your tab slots...or do you print both at he same dimension and fettle if required? Will you use a jig at some point to ensure the sections are straight...or do you relay on the accuracy of the parts and assume straightness? cheers Geoff
Hey there Geoff! firstly, thanks for watching! The tab slot tolerances are taken care of during cutting by setting the kerf value. This provides a good snug fit. The trick however is the variances in the wood thickness, which I learned the hard way in the first build, where one sheet was .7mm too thick. This go around I measure the sheets before buying them using a caliper. The frame is very much true on its own, but I will use jigs when it comes time to sheeting and planking. The fuselage is so long, that it will need to be held in place through that process.
I've watched all of your series and am anxiously waiting for the part when the plane building gets beyond the frame works and gets built into one entity and even probably gets to that stage of taking to the air. Are we ever going to see that here on UA-cam ?

Hi Michal, Yes, there is lots of progress. The plane has its 's first wing, with the second under construction. I did publish part 3 yesterday. And Part 4 is in the works. Glad to know the tutorials were able to help you.

Hey, has anyone ever tried doing this out of steel ? Like 3mm stainless? I have access to an industrial laser cutter and welder. You could tack together the pieces using a Tig welder instead of where your gluing. Would be way heavier tho , gonna need some real power to get it off the ground

hey, love the content! Just wondering how are you going to strengthen the fuse more (it just seems very twisty). Ramy Rc reinforces his fuses with carbon and i find that that seems to work on almost every model. Keep up the great work, keen to see the next episode.

Hi Paul, The parts are a combination of CF-30PP, CF Nylon, and The Nose mold placeholder is Tough PLA.

😆 Yeah, those pesky timezones! It didn't help that I was late as well. Wanted to have it done by 3pm PST but it ended up being 8pm. I have not weighed it yet... which reminds me, I need to get a scale. I can say that it's lighter than I thought it would be so far.

The US has a similar restriction but a slight bit more. I think it will be under 20 kilos.

Much appreciated Edgar, glad you like! I use Fusion 360's animation feature to create the drawings, then import the PDF files into InDesign to put the manual together. It's a slow process for sure, but it's the best method I've found.

Im an old manufacturing engineer so I expect drawings to show the finished product, so when I decided to print my cockpit I drew it out as I wanted the finished part to look,ie the wall thickness was set at 1 - 2 mm thickness, butas its only the outside thats important, do I gave to think in a different way and in thois case forget about the inside letting the printer define this, and that I should have made the wall thickness and web thickness say 0.05mm instead?
Hey there -- I'm not 100% sure what you are asking, but I assume you are wanting to know how I approached the 3D printed part of the nose. I use the exterior dimension and thicken the walls inward.
