That brings back memories! I used to ride 500's all the time in the 80's and 90's. I miss my KX 500! That thing was not made for trail riding, it was made for big fast motocross tracks where you can take full advantage of that power!
No really. lol. I don’t miss them. They either ran great or like total crap. Constant problems. Always rough, idle the smoke was annoying,at best, unbearable at times. Two cycles only run good wide open. Don’t even get me going on getting them started and warmed up. All in all they were a pain in the axx.
My first bike was a YZ 80 in the 90's. Second bike was a KX 250. Third bike was a KX 500! The power those bikes have is incredible! They are a complete rush on long outdoor tracks! My friends called mine the widow maker.
Dude, I dig how grassroots this video is. You went and bought a clapped-out beast, knew its' issues and rode it without complaints. I appreciate that you're going to restore/rebuild it to a better version of its' old self again. Look forward to seeing more of it 👍
That’s the things if always loved is people buying or already owning a bike that maybe isn’t “up to code” and just getting out and riding it no matter the issues, fun is fun and as long as you having fun giver!!
Good video! - going bush ( enduro) riding on big bore is hard work.well it was when i took my RM465z on an enduro loop,i was young like you too.lol.ride on boys!
Great video, love the kx500 power and sound. One quick tip tho, removed your carb bowl o rings and gaskets before spraying carb cleaner all over. That stuff can really damage those seals and then you’ll be forced to buy a rebuild kit
You’re one bad dude! No gloves when working on a bike. That is super smart and let me tell you why. You don’t do that daily and after you worked on the bike you washed your hands. No chance of those chemicals doing any harm especially grease and gas. The other thing is you’re tall and in a few years you’ll have even more muscle so you will be an even better rider. I’m 6’3” and was 215 racing the 500’s but I didn’t like it only because it was a lot of work. My sponsor made me race them but I did so well because I was heavy and muscular and it made the bike stick. I still love to ride them though it’s been many years there’s nothing like it but I’m sure I could only handle maybe 5 laps these days
What a steel you got that for. Man, you get that thing jetted, perfect. I'll tell you what if you think It's fast now. I am willing to bet you that the way it's jetted. It's no faster than a 250 2 stroke. If that Fast. You get it jetted right man. It'll scare the bejitas out of u. I would also suggest some new reeds. And make sure everything is sealed good like all of your gaskets , especially around the carb and airboot. I would compression test it and if needed do a top end and check you're a crank clearance. While it's a part. If you're doing bottom end, I'd do the whole 9 yd.Crank seals and all send it to pro.Circuit if you can accord it
Bringing back good memories. Bought a leftover 87 kx 500 brand new in 88 for $2699.00. Wish I never sold it. Wish you could still pay that for a new bike.
@@hd100thjd you got a bargain on that one! I paid $3000 for my brand new 88 YZ 490! If I remember correctly, the KX 500 and CR 500 were $4000 at that time.

Don't underestimate the Stark and it's 60hp that bike in the right hands will walk all over the KX 500 and it's maybe 45 hp. I hate to say it but the E bikes are here to stay they're the future.
If you think that KX-500 vibrates like crazy my old 83CR480 vibrated so bad that 2/3 the way through a moto the two end fingers on both hands would literally be pins & needlas tingling rendering you riding a beast that can and will hurt you at any given time with just 3 fingers on each hand !
