  • As a holocaust survivor, Ben Lesser has endured more than most of us can even imagine. When the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, Lesser and his family were ripped from their home in Krakow and suffered through unspeakable horrors. He and his older sister Lola were the only remaining survivors in a family of 7.

    I was trying so hard to hold back my tears, but when he said that i lost my composure and started crying. Man, I needed to hear that, thank you sir.

    I was able to meet Ben earlier this evening. Meeting a holocaust survivor has been number 1 on my bucket list since I was 10 or 11. At 23, I finally got to shake hands with this wonderful man. He endured so much, it’s absolutely unbelievable. And now he devotes his life to holocaust education. A true honor to meet him.

    Thank you for sharing. You are a brilliant speaker. The story needs to be told, because when it is forgotten history will very easily repeat itself. In this age of rising populism in politics it is a true concern.

    What a man, what a character. He is a real rock. After surviving such a tragedy i think nothing can bring you to fall.
    When I hear this story, my own problems suddenly become very small. I feel guilty that I'm sometimes dissatisfied with my life. It truly opens my eyes.

    5:18 - 6:10 "We're here today because of what this head of the Gestapo - the one act that he did is too long of a story, but was certainly uplifting to me. So, it pointed out that not all Nazis were not necessarily bad, there were some that tried to do something against their doctrination, but very few and far in-between."

      That just show that they were people too, some of them were against all this but were more scared of the what may happen.
      What happen if they know I am hidding jewish people? What if they send my or my family to one of this camps?.
      That is why I don't like the censure in the nazi and holocaust topic, they became just a character or a passage in a story not real people, real events in history, history that must be clear to everyone so that we don't fall on the same path.

      He was one of the very few Nazis who wasn’t completely evil due to him trying to help Ben and his family. Unfortunately almost all Nazis like him were willing parciptants in the Holocaust and willingly took part in it or stood by and let it happen.

    Thank you for sharing so much insight and for being relatively objectiv and for not burdening my generation through generalistic terms about "germans" or elsewise.
    It was a very nice Interview. the only problem I had was towards the end were you spoke about the founding of new Isreal and it being attacked. We need to not forget that the allied forces stole land from another country to put people there that they didn't want in thier countries either. I know it sounds awful but antisemitism was not invented by the Germans and if the USA and England for instance really were insterested in saving life, why did they limit the number of immigrants allowed or give special exception only ti "usefull refugees"?
    In the Isreal/Palenstina conflict we see that EVERYONE, even the "poor victims" are capable of terrible things not just "those evil islamic people" as America would have you believe.

    The internet can be so heart breaking. Memes and silly animal videos can rake in hundreds of thousands, millions even in views. But this man is sitting there and saying "I'm not going to stop speaking", but what can we do if the words of people like Ben Lesser fall on deaf ears? Example is that this is video only a year old with 30,100 views, but a literal shooting stars meme can blow up in less than day because its "trendy".....

    I really loved most of this AMA and it is important to remember the atrocities committed by the Nazi, but i can't possibly agree to two of his statements, which are, first, the Israel statement, which, as already mentioned by another comment, didn't mention the many problems caused by this state in the middle east, especially the atrocities committed against Palestinians, and, secondly, his last statement. It's a nice, motivational thing to say, but he shows serious disregard for other people's psyche and things they lived through, adding to that that their coping mechanisms might not be as strong as his. I mean, yeah, the Holocaust was really bad, but on a single person level, it's not the single worst thing possible to happen. Especially adding into that how different people cope in different ways with traumatic experiences. Also he shows some serious disregard for the problems many people have to face when trying to become "the best", for example that there isn't so little people in this world that everyone could find something to be "the best" in. Adding into that, capitalism doesn't work the way that if only you try hard enough, you will definitely succeed. Where ever there is someone succeeding in this economy, there are ten people failing, some of them with no fault on their behalf.
    Other than that, great and important AMA. Many thanks to you, sir, for speaking about something we should never forget. And we should never take lightly as well.

      "Work hard and you can achieve anything" - this is the belief of people who survived atrocious situations in life. They couldn't pay any attention to their emotions because they couldn't afford to be weak. It's admirable how Ben, after surviving the holocaust, used that skill to build a life for himself.
      I feel that the younger generations have completely different challenges to overcome. The epidemic of mental illness is not due to nothing. People whose ancestors lived or fought in Europe during World War II, are now dealing with the long-term effects that war and genocide has on people. Transgenerational trauma can persist many generations and many people are only now becoming aware of it.
      I wouldn't judge him too hard for that last statement. He's sharing the lessons his life taught him and we can respect him for that and at the same time do the work that our generation has inherited - heal from our family trauma.

    I admire the man's character and strength, but the land on which Israel was founded was claimed illegally and the Israelis have been slowly genociding the Palestinian people ever since 1947. There's no excuse to justify or ignore this.

      enlighten me as to how this case of systematic discrimination and murder of people following a certain belief is different from what happened in the 1940s holocaust.

    • @Chavran
      @Chavran 8 років тому +7

      +Grounded Sound I mean... it is only vaguely similar in the absolute loosest sense of the word. One could easily say the systemic anti-Semitism among Palestinians in similar to that of the Nazis... I mean if we are truly reaching that far in our comparisons.

    • @talkhtw55
      @talkhtw55 7 років тому +4

      The systematic discrimination and murder does not happen to the palestinians, in fact, nothing bad happens to them as long as they dont try to kill israelis or blow themslves up.
      It's just propaganda against Israel which is brainwashing people with lies.

      It's mind blowing how hate filled the Israeli Palestinian conflict.
      Using language like that is a sign of how deeply venemous the conflict is.
