I just watched a video someone did on the french letter r and the presenter did a pencil in the mouth exercise to help get the sound. They seem similar but I would say this sound in georgian seems to be pronounced with more force and the french r seems softer. This observation is only from listening to a couple of people and may not necessarily reflect the way the average native speakers would pronounce these in their respective languages.

It's not really that close, I'm French and I struggled with ღ.
But actually thinking about it like it's the obsolete rolled French R helps to say it I suppose. Ღ is a good deal harsher sounding all the same.
