Joscho has not just a rocksolid gypsy technique, what's very special that he developed also a very modern approach to the classic Djangotechnique. Very nice!
That's one of the essential gypsy-guitar-techniques. You come out with a double-down when playing triplets like this. You'd consider a strict alternate motion to be faster. But some players (Joscho included) gain exceptional high speed with the douple-down. Plus, you have a more dynamic expression because you always hit the 1 note stronger than 2 and 3. Thanks for posting!
Love your music and all that you do. WOW! You the man! I am senior and well I love jamming. I know just enough to have a lot of bad habits. Then again I play alone and loud on electric in my house. I may buy an acoustic. I have time to enjoy listening. I have no discipline. So becoming an expert is not my goal. I enjoy improving although experts would probably wonder what I am doing if they heard and saw me. I am a fan of blues and bluesjazz styles for jamming. I adore listening to Gypsy swing music and the many interpretations. Your first Hey Joe is unequaled. The Black Orpheus with Skollelli is delectable.
I realized how you're hooking your pinky finger under the strings to give more stability AND at the same time mute strings you're not currently picking. It feels weird for me to do that but I'll try this exercise. More right hand focus appreciated, there is so much to it that often doesn't meet the eye but it's crucial for developing accuracy, speed and clarity.
Yup ... Great advice for any guitarist. Work on "clean" before you work on "fast." Excellent lesson - both in terms of "video production quality" and gypsy guitar technique. Thank You.
Mr. Stephen is hands down one of the few best guitar players in the world. Accurate and insanely clean playing. For his quality this is not a class, this is public service.
Wow, I appreciate all of these great ideas. These techniques seem impossible at first but I like the way you broke them down into small, manageable steps. I especially liked the section where you marked each of the strings you played with a red dot for more clarity. Thanks for the great video and the chance to enter this contest.

Joscho your a master guitarist...Fantastic...Made Hendrix look like a little kid...Would love to hear your rendition of th Collins Shuffle...Albert Collins...with Henry on sax.
4:42 I think the one editing this might have misplaced that second last red dot. He's designating the strings beforehand, a pattern that goes like so: e' - g - b - d - g - A - d - E (two stings up, one back, repeat). Just in case anyone got confused by that as I did
looking forward to upload more videos - but if you want to go deeper check out my online class that i do for many many years ;) www.gypsyguitaracademy.com
Thank you Joscho for a great and focused lesson! When picking at higher speeds, do you still do strict rest strokes, or do you feel that you use the other string as a “psychological rest stroke”, continually thinking about the other string so that you stay loose in the right hand? Cheers and best wishes for 2021, Jz
Hey Joscho! Thanks for the lesson! Great stuff! I hope u can reply to this question: Do you by any chance have the tabs/lecture for your amazing song "Blues for Stochelo"? I love that melody and would like to learn how to play the main melody. Also want to learn the rhythm guitar part.
It's techneeeque. Not Technik. Fellow German from Niedersachsen hier. Just a friendly reminder. I too sometimes pronounce it wrong. Excellent playing by the way. Huge fan of yours.
Everybody comments on how can Django be so unbelievable using only 2 fretting fingers. its his right hand picking technique that is so superhuman and faster than the eye can see that makes up for his injured fingers
Thanks for the content Joscho! Do you recommend using rest stroke gypsy picking on a normal acoustic guitar? I've heard that the string spacing on acoustics makes it more difficult. Is it worthwhile?
If you watch the little finger, you see that it anchors the position of the right hand . Not sure just how automatic this is, but it makes a big difference in location of the pick to the string you want to be picking.
TheLochs in gypsy jazz guitar you „always“ play a downstroke when you change strings, im not sure but i think i read it has do do with the volume or the sound, or both... but anways its a gypsy jazz guitar „rule“.
Because using your whole arm movement to let your hand drop into the string will give you a distinguished accentuation on the downbeat of the triplet. Accentuation over economy of motion on this one here
TheLochs it’s a technique that evolved from concentrating on rhythmic convenience, first somebody just does something that works for his needs, then 100 people follow and ask how to do it and make it a theory😁 think of it like this: Gypsy Jazz is very Swing rhythm based, swung 8th notes, you get what I mean. So having 3 note per string Arpeggio patterns was just very convenient to play going along with that down stroke technique, that’s why sweeping is very natural to do with that mindset in mind as well
So the last note is a downward stroke and the next string is struck as a downward also..no coming up on to next string with an upward stroke ...wasted motion to me ..not economical picking..i don't know how the gypsy jazz guy's are so fast ..baffling lol
it just amazes me how generous the professionals are with their knowledge, FREE! Thanks Joscho Stepahn
Love seeing this focus on the right hand. And Joscho has one of the best in the business.

Great tips as always Joscho! Question: which pick do you use?
It’s a „Big City Pick 1,8mm“ by Michael Wegen www.wegenpicks.com
Thanks! I use the same pick :D

Ich auch
What's the name of the piece at 5:41?
"J'attendrai"
Did Django play with pick?
I'm pretty sure he did.
That is the same as alternate picking just remember that all first notes are down strokes correct?
Kannst Du mal bitte erklären, wozu die Rest-Strokes dienen? Für mich als Blues- und Rock-Gitarrist ist das eher ungewöhnlich.
I had an idea that its super important to move RH from the elbow when playing gypsy jazz
Did I miss the lesson how to hold your plectrum?

Johnschnow Stephan
Is it me or does he sound a lot like Christopher Walken when he talks?
Oh no! The red dot played the wrong string! It should have stuck with a comfortable tempo instead of trying to play too fast... : )
I learned a lot more in these six minutes than in one lesson with my guitar teacher. My bad.
The subtitles hide your hands 😢
you can disable it in d settings so it won't obstruct ur view
