  • How to Change Gear Oil in a Porsche 997 or 996 Manual Transmission. This is a very easy procedure and should be done regularly especially if you track your car. The drain plug is magnetized please make sure you clean it thoroughly before reinstalling. It's best to warm up the transmission fluid by driving the car before draining. Make sure the vehicle is level (all four wheels lifted off the ground)

What was your reasoning for going with Motul gear oil over the recommendation from Porsche with Shell or Mobil 1 gear oil options ??

At the time I got a good deal from Motul they've been working with a lot of track organizations and racing teams. I really like their oils. There's nothing wrong with Shell and Mobil 1, I've used those too.

I think the spec is 3 liters, but I purchased extra as not all can be pumped out or each bottle. It came in around 3-3.1 Liters.

I believe it's for Limited Slip www.motul.com/us/en/products/gear-300-ls-75w90. I've sold the car but the new owner hasn't complained.

Just a question, what is the upper 24 mm filling for? If you use the upper plug for filling and let the forseen filling plug open until overflow, is there anything wrong? I ask, because the upper filling plug are easier to reach ) Is there anything wrong with my idea?

Keeping both plugs open on the side will work fine, it's just not normal practice. If you don't want to use a hand pump, Amsoil now sells these squeeze bottles/bags of gear oil, and that works really well for reaching tight spots like that forward plug. For Americans, Wilfried's foreseen fill plug is referring to the one I originally pointed out in the video (the one which is forward on the transaxle.)

@@SirFixAlotAutos Thanks Dan) I did it WRONG) For my 997/1 2008 6 gear manuel, we made the oil change by using the upper plug for filling by using approx. 2.9 ltr Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140. I can feel the oil using a finger but there wasnt a overflow at the forward CORRECT filling plug. Now, i bought a pump ( like you used ) and another liter gear oil. Bad feeling when its not overflowing! I drove the car already and shifting is much better!

@@wk689 That's great news, yes, go with the forward correct plug for filling, it's best. I think a lot of manufacturers will be going with the Amsoil style packaging in the next year, so easy to use.

Can I use a non LS oil?

    • @SirFixAlotAutos

Limited-slip lubricants have special additives just for those components and it's best to stay with the recommended gear oil. Non-Limited Slip lubricants should be used in non-LS applications.
