Rustic decor and softwoods are not particularly my thing. However, as I've delved into timber framing, and more outdoor applications of woodworking, softwoods and more rustic design have begun to appeal to me more. Enter this video on building a backyard speakeasy gate from western red cedar. Speakeasy style doors and gates are defined for the most part by a porthole that can be looked through to see to the other side. Traditionally, these are done with a mini door that can be opened and shut to keep unwanted visitors out. This commission included three rustic cedar gates, one with a proper speakeasy door, one without, and a small doggie style door (no pun intended) for a modern yet historic home here in South Florida. Using construction grade lumber, this video documents building a cedar gate from start to finish in a more modern and refined fashion, with a rustic flair. Instead of battens and shadowbox, this solid cedar gate relies on a breadboard end to keep the door flat and the rounded over edges allow water to run off accordingly to prevent long term damage from exposure to the elements. The epoxy is a great alternative to traditional glues, even outdoor rated glues as it has longer setting times which makes the glue up easier but also is distinctly used for applications with lengthy water or element exposure. While for the most part, this is a pretty DIY wood gate, using construction grade materials and simple techniques, there are some traditional elements demonstrated. Breadboard ends, done with an ever so slight modification on the traditional, allows the beginning woodworker to elevate their techniques and approaches to this project and others. If this is something you're interested in trying, don't forget to check out the article that will be up on Instructables as well as my website linked below.
I also would be remiss if I didn't mention that this video is dedicated to Aaron Mattia who unexpectedly passed. Aaron was Jimmy Diresta's shop assistant who I met at the Blackthorne Timber-In just a few weeks ago. Aaron was helpful, polite, and exactly as everyone described. You may notice that I've been messing with a new opening in some of my videos, a blatantly copied @NickDiGiovanni opening tossing a @jimmydiresta ice pick into my workbench. I traded Jimmy a Cow Dog shirt for that ice pick and odds are that ice pick was probably soldered together by Aaron. It's probably also worth noting that take took about five tries and I spiked the ice pick against my workbench each time and it subsequently smashed against the wall and the floor. The ice pick stayed intact, which assuming it was made by Aaron speaks to the quality of his work. I'm honored to have crossed paths with him and those who watch this video understand how deep this maker/woodworking community is and the strength he and others have brought to it.

Beautiful project and it's very nice that you dedicated it Aaron
Thanks Johnny. Yeah it felt right to do. Crazy that I just met him less than a month ago. Love ya buddy and hope to see you soon!
Really nice bud! Haha your face peeking through at the end was hilarious!
Awwwww creep creep creep
That is one sexy gate! (The baby one too.)
Yaaas thank you!
Looks really cool. Got some great ideas from this. tyty
Thank you sir!
Helllls yeaaaa bro, so f dope!!
Thanks brother!
Gate turned out amazing man! Nice work.
Thanks Brent! Too bad you don’t live closer… we could totally have some fun.
Quit trying to make “LCS” a thing. Great build Chris!
Bruh… it’s already a thing. Lolz. Luh you.
Great stuff man!
Btw I ended up buying that shirt with the cookie. I need to get your merch next!
Appreciate it! Relatively simple build but it was definitely a project to film and edit.
Awesome! Yeah I'm probably going to hold out for a bit to do another batch of shirts. I like to make these kind of "one run" designs. But maybe early next year I'll whip a few more of these up since people liked them so much.
@@CowDogCraftWorks awesome. looking forward to the next drop.
Great process for making the curve on top Chris! I think the gate turned out great!
Thanks grant! Dude your trailer is looking fire!
@@CowDogCraftWorks thanks Chris! Just gotta put the edit together one of these days 🤣🤣
Great video Chris! Enjoyed the build and picked up a couple of tricks to try👊🏻
Yaaaaas thanks man. I almost used the word relish when I was drilling into those loose tenons but y’know… I didn’t.
Another really great build Chris, with lots of helpful insights throughout. The piece as a whole is really fantastic, I love all the different details you incorporated.
Thank you! I have no idea what’s next on my agenda. 😂
@@CowDogCraftWorks just do some more bleached ash holes, that gets the UA-cam algorithm going
@@heyitsthatdude17 I need something. The old man in the basement needs to turn some pipes on for me.
Really nice work! How long did you let the cedar boards dry before you started?
Honestly? Not that long. Probably about a week or two. They weren’t sopping wet when I got them but as I’m sure youre aware that’s not the norm. They definitely shrunk down a fair bit too. The evidence was down at the breadboard when I was delivering them on site. We’ve had a ton of rain though so they’re probably swelling and shrinking all over the place.
How did that epoxy work out for you ? I'm building functional shutters for my house and wamt to use epoxy instead of glue for the joints.
It’s great. It’s a little thinner than you would expect so keep some acetone around for cleanup but it gives an awesome understated seam. These gates sat outside for a couple months before install and there’s no concern for delamination whatsoever.
What am I missing? Isn't a breadboard end typically fastened to allow for movement? In an outdoor setting I would expect a lot of wood movement. Why won't it crack as the gate shrinks and expands across its width?
The mortises in the breadboard end itself are cut wider than the tenon. Not by a monstrous amount but by a little. Also, not filmed but part of the process was using a drawbore pin… or in my case a screwdriver shaft to widen the hole in the tenon laterally a touch. Again… nothing extreme but to accommodate for some left to right expansion and contraction. These gates were actually built about two months before install and sat under an overhang outside. The wood movement is evident. It shrank about 1/8 to 3/16 on either end and you can actually see the difference between the “door” and the end. I expect it to expand similarly. Also worth noting: here in south florida we operate at pretty high humidity all year long so seasonal changes aren’t going to be remotely as extreme as they may be in some areas of the country and that consistency is accounted for in the construction.
@@CowDogCraftWorks Thanks for the detailed explanation! Everything you say makes perfect sense, it just wasn't clearly enumerated in the video.
No worries. It’s a balance between talking too much and talking too little in these things. Thanks for watching!
Awesome!! Where do you source your cedar from? Big Box like HD or lumber yard?
84 lumber actually. I just recently worked with them professionally speaking but at the time of the video I just went like a normal person and bought lumber from their yard.
@@CowDogCraftWorks cool! Thanks. I didn’t know they were here in Florida. I found one in Gainesville, about 45 minutes away.
@@Grampiswoodshop yeah they’re great for construction grade stuff. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them for hardwoods.
@@CowDogCraftWorks Thanks again Chris!!
I will L and S, but refuse to C. Oh, wait...
HOT DAMN!
I'm unsubscribing from all youtube channels that don't use LCS
Bro I did some LCS last night and I’m still lit AF.
