Let's get by the rhetoric, folks. The most amazing "classical" suite of punk, new wave and just fuckin amazingly outrageous aural sculpture that is The Stranglers. Loathed by the ignorant, but I ain't one! Fly straight ad infinitum, family in black!
When I saw them at the Top Rank Suite in Brighton in 1976, I thought something was wrong with my eyes but soon realised it was a constant flume of gob arcing up and over the stage. What a live show that was, the best. Thank you for this.
Great to find this as I was there at this show. They probably played for about 1 hour, definitely more songs played as I remember Who Wants The World as even though I was young (about 12years old!) I remember thinking what a great line for a chorus! It was my first gig and pretty damn awesome!
The MOST underrated band of all time! Hugh was right in saying the media focussed so much on the manufactured violence that the brilliance of their music was passed over.
I was lucky enough to see them around this time at a tiny club called the Left Bank, in the NYC suburbs. Closest I ever was at a concert, literally resting my arms on the stage. Also the latest concert I ever went to, they didn't go onstage till after 2 in the morning! All I remember now is Hugh wearing a big black fedora and him going off on Sec. of State Alexander Haig about something. It was during the Reagan administration.
Thanks for your efforts with the sound, it's fine actually, certainly punchy enough. What a band they had become by '82, with so much to draw from that back catalogue, from _Down In The Sewer_ to _European Female_ and back again. And just incredible onstage by then - always were, mind - but this is just _imperious._ "I'll see you in the sewer, darling, and don't be late" xD ♫
@@carolinedow3413 I could never get into their music after JC left, tbh. I remember exactly where I was when I heard they'd split up. In a small café just outside the train station in Saintes, as I lived in France at the time. I bought a French music magazine & was reading it whilst having a coffee as I'd just arrived in the city by train for a day out. I lived in Rochefort-sur-Mer, which was 30-40 minutes away by train. There was an interview with HC about leaving the Stranglers, & I was heart-broken. They were the band I'd adored since I first heard them as a young child in '77. I only managed to see them live once, the free Heineken music festival in 1994. I was too young to see them when HC was with them & would never pay to see them without him. They had lost their sparkle for me without him, I think they lost their way. Their music wasn't as biting as it could be, plus my taste in music had turned heavier by then.
@angelaburrow8114 Hi Angela I was like you in losing interest after Hugh left. However, the band did produce some great tracks after Hugh. For example, listen to the album Norfolk Coast or Suite. Relentless is a fabulous track. The band has certainly produced a fantastic album in Dark Matters. Give it a few listenings on UA-cam or Spotify and see what you think. The band are on their 50th anniversary tour. No one can replace Hugh - or Dave and Jet but the current band are definitely back, not that they ever really left. Hope this is of interest, a new source of musical pleasure and a renewed love of the band
@@carolinedow3413 Would probably consider myself to be a "Stranglers purist" (which is a silly thing to call myself) - saying that though, Dark Matters was, for the most part, a return to form for them (This Song / And If You Should See Dave / If Something's Gonna Kill Me / No Man's Land / Last Men on the Moon / White Stallion were all pretty good) but the rest could be dropped as far as I could care. If they carried that tone over to a new album I'd listen to it, but their best is still behind them.
dave should have kept the hammond in the tour van and never replaced it. the digital organs would /will never sound like this * listening to rats rally with the reverb *
Your correct and I agree! but it didn’t like travelling, and mixing old valve technology with modern wasn’t always compatible. Plus it weighed a bloody ton and unlike the 1st Hammond that was stolen in New York when someone drove the truck off, it didn’t split
@ I remember reading about that heist in strangled! Very sad read as an 11 year old ! Point taken ! You sound like you have 1st hand knowledge of that weight !
Great band best ever.so glad i was brought up in this era.Rip dave and jett.
It doesn’t get better than this. Great band, great songs. RIP Dave and Jet

Love the adverts! LOL
An me Geoff poison Pearce from London's burning in the Beecham's advert
Same as. We've moved into a false sense of progress now with air fryers replacing the Moulinex Masterfry.
They were a great band!
They ARE a great band still

I'm sure the man in Beecham's advert is Geoff from London's burning
HELLO JOHN AND TANX; what is the date of this live ?
18/10/82 but not sure if that is gig date or broadcast date.
