FYI Ed doesn't just have metal powers. He can do everything. Alchemists aren't tied to any particular material, but they might have specialisations or areas of research.
They'll figure it out, just give them a bit of time
So Kenny wasn't that off in his thinking, because a lot of the other state alchemists get their name for similar reasons, Mustang being the Flame alchemist as an obvious example.
Mmhmm. Like I think many people think Roy can only do Flame alchemy. But from my understanding he can do a lot more. But he'll need a transmutation circle probably, on top of the materials needed for said alchemy. Stuff like that.
Just to ellaborate on what you have said.
Alchemy is entirely bound to knowledge. Fundamentally anyone who possesses the necessary knowledge to "understand, deconstruct, and reconstruct" the necessary matter into the desired outcome could perform the alchemical transmutation. The basic difference between an alchemist and a non-alchemist is just that, knowledge.
Someone like Roy has invested a lot of studying into basically making thermobaric explosions - his transmutations typically create a pocket of combustible gas mixture in the air - this is ignited by a spark that his special gloves produces when he snaps his fingers and then boom - if there is a way to transmute this type of gas pocket from the available materials you can bet that Roy knows how to do it, because that is what he has specialised in- any other alchemist could match the transmutation, but they'd have to know what Roy knows. Similarly Roy can achieve any alchemical feat that any other alchemist can, but he'd have to know how to do it. (Roy also knows exactly to what degree to transmute his explosive to get the outcome he wants, another alchemist might blow himself up if he tried to do what Roy does - Roy could light a cigarette without so much as scorching your moustache, and on the other end of the scale could probably flatten a building)
Ed's designation as Fullmetal comes partly from his automail arm, but mostly from his "nerves of steel" that Bradley comments on during the examination. Apart from modifying his arm, Ed shows no particular aptitude for working with metal - if anything he (and Al) seems to be good at working with whatever he is walking on (masonry, stone, earth, wood, etc.) he rarely does things like transmute the very air, or mess around with water.
@@CrazeeAdam Yeah, he can only do the Flame alchemy at the snap of his fingers because of the circles on his gloves. Any other type of alchemy would require him to draw a circle

Just wanna point out that Hiromu Arakawa wrote Fullmetal Alchemist one of the best stories in anime and manga as a side job for her actual passion project Gi No Saji (Silver Spoon) a story about about kids in agriculture school. She is a certified badass as she did this while also taking care of her aging mother.
... wait the author is the same for silver spoon? Damn, I need to finish that anime now. They have such different tones I never guessed.

I actually really like that Edward wasn't able to immediately become a State Alchemist after his injury, but that he had to get used to his new arm and leg and practice with it. It adds a sense of realism to the show to see something like that.
Yeah, not like something like that is happening in LITERALLY every anime after serious injuries or losses of body parts... Except dumb ones and JoJo.

I can’t remember where I heard this and it may be wrong but, regarding the name “fullmetal alchemist”:
The literal Japanese translation is “Steel Alchemist” or “Alchemist of Steel” and it is something of a dig at Ed. It refers to his metal limbs but implies he’s stubborn, too. The English equivalent would probably be like “Hard Head Alchemist”.

The magic system in FMAB is one of the best I’ve seen. It’s laws are unbreakable.
always felt that the best world building for fantasy comes with restrictions, laws, internal logic. there can be something fantastic, like magic chemistry, but it's not just magic magic where anything can happen.
@@mikemath9508 This is based on something called the Hard and Soft magic systems. Hard systems generally have well-defined rules and limitations. Soft systems have much less rules and almost no limitations. Lotr is a good example of a Soft magic system.

Exactly. It makes the show even better because there is something that you can't do, it's impossible and the main character doesn't just magically do it even if Edward does at some point in the future

For anyone confused he’s the Fuher, named King Bradley.
An interesting thing to note is that in the manga the brothers' backstory wasn't shown until later in the series. If it was in the original order it wouldn't be shown till around episode 12. I don't know why it was changed around, but I do prefer the anime's ordering.
I wish they’d kept the Liore episode first though. There are a lot of small moments there that make it obvious that it’s supposed to be our first introduction to certain concepts. For example, the first time we see alchemy is Al drawing a transmutation circle on the ground.
When bones made fmab they kind of assumed that everyone watching it had already watched the 2003 anime. So all the stuff that the 2003 anime covered before it diverted away from the actual story kind of gets streamlined in the first few episodes
Yeah, establishing the Elric's story early on is a good change
This episode introduces something that most snounen anime protagonists have in common, in one way or another: absent parents.

@@Marta-uv4id not sure if you've been watching the outros, but there are occasional post-credit scenes in the show, some of which are pretty important: 6, 8, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33, 36, 40, 42, 43, 44, 46, 48, and 49. besides those, 45, 54, 63, and 64 have altered outros that are worth watching (especially the finale).
@@CarbonMage Thank you so much! I've seen the episode 6 one, but knowing all the episodes where there are post-credit scenes will make this so much easier. I missed most of them while watching Attack on Titan and it made some stuff really confusing.
Al was taken because that was his toll to pay for resurrecting their mother, just like Ed's toll was his leg. As you watch the series more, you'll find that Truth works in cruel ironies. Ed, the fierce independent, lost his leg so that he could never stand on his own to feet again. Al, who wanted to feel the warmth of his mother's hug, lost his body so as to never feel anything.
There are other examples of Truth working in cruel irony, but at this point, they're spoilers.

Actually the point isn't that 1 human soul is worth another it's the total opposite.
In fma you can't bring someone back from the death because you have to give something of equal value in return but each human soul is unique and thus can't be offered.
So you can make a human body if you want but using materials that make up our bodies but you can't make a soul since there is only 1 of it so there is nothing to give in return because it's that valuable.
i think they also say that in the series too, so we can wait for them to get to that haha
@@Thesmus been a while since I last seen fmab but I remember it as being hinted at only, in a show don't tell kinda way so I thought I should correct them so they don't go with the misconception that in fmab there is a price on the human soul which may lead them to not understand the actions of certain characters if they didn't know that

It’s a form of character progression within the writing of the show, not something for you to spell out in a comment section of someone who just watched episode TWO
This show likes to tell stories through the “Windows to the soul” characters and their eyes convey a lot of information.

I’ve watched this series so many times over and with friends who have never seen it before. I’m hyped knowing I get to experience this anime again through sets of fresh eyes!

Montana's and Kenny's character analysis is unparalleled
Alchemist is so cool, it's basically Chemistry + Anime Magic Rules, and ita done very well so it's not OP
it uses the hard magic trope, which isn't very common in Shonen anime.
Alchemists rearrange matter using a circle filled out with an array of symbols and lines than explain the rearrangement. Theoretically any rearrangement is possible so long as the alchemist understands rearrangement at the molecular level. The Elrics are very well educated. State Alchemists tend to specialize in a specific area and will often wear a pre-drawn circle on their person so that they can do a specific transmutation at a moment’s notice being that they are soldiers. The clasping Ed does is a bit special.

Most Alchemists are given a title based on their specialization, but Edward is basically a generalist. The different transmutation circles can only do the one type of transmutation they're made for but Ed isn't limited by a circle.
Woo third comment! As much as I was laughing at “episode 1: meet god” he wasn’t saying that he was like “the Christian god” the character most people call “the truth” was trying to explain what he is just as much the other things he listed. More like he was saying he is what humans conceptualize as “god” the mysterious man behind the curtain as it were.
Yeah it’s a similar thing as the “god” in Code Geass.
The one thing I'm a bit sad about concerning these earlier episodes is that they're tailored more for an audience that already knows some of these characters and plot twists.
Yeah. The "most complete" way to watch the show is actually to watch episode 1 of fmab _and then_ watch the first couple episodes of 2003 up until rush Valley. Because the brotherhood episodes up until that point are kinda abbreviations (because those episodes had literally already been animated).
Fmab is great by itself, but that's the "direct from manga" translation.
I remember the first time I liked the channel because of Avatar: the last airbender at that time Montana was still your girlfriend and now this channel is well developed and now you guys are doing fullmetal alchemist reaction? and Montana is already your fiancé. Keep up your good work.
I am really glad that you reacting to this series! It is my favorite! Some stuff is left out of the manga but the comments usually fill the reactors in on anything that is missed out.
Rewatching this again and just realised...Montana guessed the entire theme of the show and Eds closing monologue of "there's no such thing as a painless lesson"....need to see how many other shows you have psychic powers for 😂

the alchemy aspect isn’t like avatar where they can only control certain things. The “magic system” in this world is a little more complicated. They can essentially use alchemy on anything as long as they have understanding of its components-since people can only learn so much, i think they have to specialize BUT Ed is a prodigy, and he has the ability to do alchemy without a transmutation circle. The titles are also kind of just in reference to their skills /abilities/traits-not always their specialties.
I love the implication that Al probably saw way more than Ed because he "gave up" his entire body. Yet, he doesn't seem to remember it. Was his soul, his memories, affected by Ed pulling him in the armor ? Or is it just a misleading thought about Al's potential as an alchemist ?
With Mustang saying he's not their father, could it be that he takes that role as time pass ? Like, giving them what they didn't got, and especially Ed, from their real father ? I'm all in for family drama !
I wonder if Winry and Hawkeye will meet again. The way they present it, I would expect this to play a huge role in both their development. Winry having lost her parents, she could be like a mother to her and the boys too.
I wonder how the boys learned to fight. They say they had an alchemy teacher, could she has teach them fighting too ? 'Cause they don't seem to have someone close who would teach them that otherwise.
Ed's guilt is terribly strong. Being the big brother, he probably feels responsible for what happened to Al. And, considering it probably their mother that suffered that night too, it adds up. The poor boy move in an adult world when he's only...14/15/16 ? I don't remember exactly.
I would love to see you react to Fruits Basket one day. The way you go in depth with stuff would suit a drama/family series like this one.

If you look while Ed is lecturing Bradley about how he conducts the exams, you can actually see he has his sword drawn. Plus, I'm pretty sure that "shhhing"-like sound right before Ed brings it to his throat is supposed to be him slicing off the tip of the spear.
The mother's hair "style" where her hair is tied low, similar to Eren's mum, is notorious for its foreshadowing

First time I ever saw anime was actually the human transmutation scene here, I fell asleep on the couch and woke up to this at the ripe age of 10 and was thoroughly traumatized lmao
Ed is now able to do transmutations without a transmutation circle. He is a prodigy alchemist and extremely skilled because he sacrificed his leg to get that brief glimpse of eternity, truth/god. He sacrificed his arm to bring his brother's soul back and bind it to the suit of armor.

I think the title "Fullmetal" given by Bradley hints at the automail prosthetics Ed fights with AND the fact he said Ed's got "nerves of Steel".
Really enjoying the journey. I would ask that you turn down the music during your discussion at the end. It is just a smidgen too loud. I would recommend about 10-15% quieter. It is not a huge problem, but it is just a little to loud at times.

feel like you guys need to know because i didn't until YEARS after reading/watching the series, but bradley's first name is literally king. his name is king bradley, and then his title is fuhrer. arakawa made a lot of characters' names puns based on their abilities/defining characteristics (alex armstrong, the strong arm alchemist? lmao) but it can be easy to miss some of them in the english version
They said like 3 times, in the first episode, that everyone thought Al was the Fullmetal Alchemist because he was fully metal so I do not see how Kenny did not put it together lol

Without giving anything away I'd like to request that you do episodes 27 and 28 together. The point of episode 27 doesn't really make any sense until episode 56 and so it will seem like just a weird flashback episode.
Alternatively, a unique idea might hold off on episode 27 and watch it right before (still combined with) 56.
