Performance is a gamefreak issue. People blame nintendo, despite playing no role in developing the games, and then willfully ignore all the other nintendo titles that have open areas/worlds that run/look great. Gamefreak needs to step their game up. It's not a nintendo problem.
@@bmac2814 Did you just compare the performance of GoW to Pokemon Scarlet/Violet? They are mountains apart. Having said that, I completely agree with you that the performance is an issue Game Freak themselves need to solve. There's no excuse for it. Even on the archaic Switch hardware. It's always the go-to comparison but BotW (a game released for the Wii U let's remember) handles it far far better. GF have never been at the forefront of development with these games, to be fair they've never needed to be. The games sell insane amounts regardless. But I really hope someday we get a Pokemon game that uses the peak of the ability of whatever console it's on. Rather than always wondering what if another development studio had been in charge
they had an update to 1.0.1, and it fixed a bunch of graphical errors, but still, i think the background stuff is a design flaw for the openworld stuff.
I find it weird that there isn't any puzzle solving using your Pokemon's type or abilities in an open world version of the game. Like an ice Pokémon that can freeze objects or water or use your fire Pokémon to burn rope to release a platform or an electric one that can either add or take away charge or power from machines or lights to reveal areas. Seems like you could do that on a fairly basic level like it's not even that far from something like the Lego games where each character has an ability that can be used to solve puzzles but the potential to do that with Pokémon could be amazing.
It makes too much sense, it would be too fun, and would force GameFreak to utilize Pokemon lore in creative ways. Nah, we need to keep fighting Team Rocket variants
I'm not sure why they don't make the style of graphics cel shaded like the cartoon. I feel like it would be easier to do that style and hide blemishes and keep performance up.
I've honestly really disliked this art direction since it's reveal. You can feel that Ken Sugimori's design sense hasn't carried over to this title. It's so weird. The characters kind of look fine in drawn form but ingame have these oddly realistic touches I'm not up for Pokemon having. Still think that Lets Go had the best style on Switch even if that game wasn't for me. They should have kept working with improving that style and could have had better performing games.
Yeah imagine a Pokemon game that looks like Borderlands. That would be so cool. The original Borderlands was pretty drab and still looked good because of cel-shading. That would be really cool for the next main game - which is how I know they won't do that.
I know right?? I was just thinking i hate the design direction of this game. Everything looks so weirdly shiny and plastic?? Why don’t the devs just use the cartoony vibe of the pokemon from past gens and translate that to the environments?? Its like nothing fits together and is made out of cheap plastic + the color pallete is awful…its so dark…i play pokemon for the cartoony bright vibe not this “realistic” dark color scheme
Even as a huge Pokémon fan I really can’t defend the performance issues. No one expected them to do another Pokémon game this year they easily could have pushed this another few months to a year even and most people would be fine with it. And the excuse of merch and anime doesn’t really work cause the plush’s have been out for months online and the tcg does not come out til next year. The only reason I think they will even attempt to fix the performance issues is because it’s supposed to be the VGC game for the next few years.
@@JusaWanderer if you dislike McDonald’s so much, wouldn’t the most logical course of action be to stop eating there, rather than harass those that do?

I honestly wish they could let us have the ability to jump while playing as the trainer. It just feels weird being restricted with no ability to even have a tiny jumping possibility. Hopfully the next game will have it...
I mean, your Ridemon sort of mitigates this but yea I see what you mean stuck on a small fence without calling my Mighty Lizard to leap over it in dramatic fashion lol.

I'm sorry but when did this magical fix to Xenoblade 2 performance happen? The game still looks like and performs like ass (still a great RPG of course but definitely still jank).

Brilliant Diamond, IMO, looks AMAZING and runs great (even though I HATE exp-share). Especially when I compare it to Pokemon Moon on my 3DS (no I did not buy a 3DS, I replaced the top screen for my little brother and then he ended up giving it to me after he got a new one). This new Pokemon game looks awesome, but very half-assed and shoddy at the same time. A company this massive should not be releasing games in such a state, and I think it is HIGH time that Nintendo announce a new console ASAP. The handheld gaming market is going to pass them by if they're not careful, even with their juggernaut Pokemon IP. These big companies get lazy and take their customer base for granted, until one day they wake up in the dust as shadows of their former selves that they are too blinded to ever find the light.
Really disappointed to hear no level scaling for the gyms How hard is it to set completion flags? I really dislike the idea that it's supposed to be our own adventure, but if we want to go rogue then it feels like we aren't supposed to/being punished for it
I don't understand this mentality. Make a new team and the problem of overleveling is instantly gone. There are over 400 playable characters.... pick some new ones for the different challenges. We don't have to play this new open world game the same way we played the isometric games.
I absolutely understand this, and I don't want to pass judgement until I play. But that still forces me out of the way I prefer to play the game, which seems to be at odds with the "it's your adventure" theme
Yep it would be so easy... 'First gym fought Lv12-14 Pokemon. Second gym fought Lv 18-20 Pokemon' for example. Just have each gym have different level Pokemon/evolutions based on how many have been completed so far.

I also can't believe that Charizard is appearing in Scarlet and Violet Games while Venasaur and Blastoise are not, it's as if Charizard is becoming more popular than the other Kanto Starter Pokemon and the fire starter Pokemon from other region even more.
I used to feel the same way but now I honestly wish they restricted the roster even more. I think the game would heavily benefit from more front end time spent optimizing assets, creating better textures, and increasing performance. New Pokemon can always be coded into the game post release with DLC as they are probably the easiest thing to produce work flow wise but are really time consuming. Better yet Gamefreak needs to collaborate with another developer or hire some 3D video game engine building technicians and produce an engine that is used across future generations. This way they could re-use assets from previous games and have an even larger expanded roster in future releases.
Charizard has always been given favoritism over other starters. Just be happy he doesn't seem to have a new super shiny form. Or maybe he does honestly haven't been keeping up with this series. lol

Funny part about Sonic, the game runs well on better hardware then the Switch. Sonic Team are frankly technical wizards at times. It runs well on Switch for the most part. The pop in is more of an engine issue that they couldn't seem to workout.
@@JusaWanderer The Pop in for these new Pokemon games looks a lot worse, it’s even flickering yet not many are pointing it out but on all reviews for Sonic Frontiers it seems to be an issue that everyone is continuously bashing on, seems like franchise bias to me especially when Frontiers biggest problems are more down to cutting corners and laziness in design near the end of the game but pretty sure for Pokemon it will be a minor issue to most people. By the way not trying to hate on theses new Pokemon games or make Sonic Frontiers look better but I definitely think both the new Pokemon Games and Sonic Frontiers suffer from the same problem: Rushed Development!
I am a few hours into the game, and i really want to love it but the performance issues are just really annoying. Lmao STOP blaming the switch for the performance issues when it was GF being incompetent as usual. We have a lot of games that look better than pokemon and open world while also have a stable performance on switch
It’s 2022, time for GF to get it together! Next main game which will probably be on the next main console needs better graphics and performance. But can’t wait to play as well.
Big pass for me on this. The performance issues are one thing, but S/V just don't do anything impressive. Legends Arceus was more of a step away from the usual formula. I think I'll wait for the next legends game. Mainline pokemon games just don't do it anynore.
Genuinely don't know how Pokemon is the only franchise on the switch that hasn't figured out how to optimize their games for a somewhat stable performance. It looks like it runs worse or just as bad as Rune Factory 5, and that was made by a small dev team.
The fact that Xenoblade Chronicles 3 runs way better than Pokémon with some issues pushing the hardware to the very limits it's a perfect example of how it's not only Switch's hardware's fault
Personally, like with Legends, i know it's not right to get a game with Jank and minor glitches that can ruin the fun but i think as long as it doesn't completely hinder my fun, kick me from the game or is unplayable: i am still gonna have fun with it. I mean I've played and enjoyed games like Hyrule Warriors on the 3DS when people said it was bad. And look, i get it, biggest named franchise and all that but unless it looks like it belongs on a freaking unfinished PS1 and plays like a 3rd party game with no love then I'm not gonna complain about minor things that "ruin the game". I'm still gonna have fun with a series I've enjoyed since Silver. Unless it's a completely broken mess: I'm playing it.

I really miss 2d Pokémon games I really wish they didn’t abandon them completely should’ve went the route Zelda went by making both types. They could’ve made some super pretty 2d Pokémon games with the tech they have now compared to the bland play dough looking 3d games
Not loving it but in the end still liking it a lot, thats the whole problem people keep giving this good ratings despite of the laziness of GameFreaks, if we keep doing that, they will never step up there game.
probably the worse part of S/V is deff how the online battle timer's still 20 minutes just like in bdsp and sword and shield. that literally just kills players who want to play competitive 6v6. I've no doubt everyone will complain about this, unless they've just accepted it, which is actually really sad, cuz that really needs to be changed back to 60 mins. if only there was a way, anything to get gamefreak to change the battle timer back to 60 mins like it was in X&Y, only then would the battles be actually enjoyable, but 20 mins is enough for 3v3 yet deff not enough for a 6 v 6 and doesn't consider some people are slow with their decision making. but on the positive side, at least dynamax doesn't exist anymore(since the animations took too long in pvp) and recovery move pp is nerfed so the 20 min timer doesn't seem that bad, but We'll have to wait and see
The timer is deliberate. They want to push everyone to do double battles because of how time consuming singles can be and it'sthe offical format. It's a soft way of still having them there so people complain as much but can be impossible to play at times.
For me, the biggest 2 issues with the game were the performance issues, and the butchering of character customization. You can't customize your top/bottom at all. There's an in-world reason for this, being that the academy you are attending has a dress code, but that is no excuse in my eyes. Character customization was one of the best inclusions to the franchise and I can't believe they'd downgrade it so heavily here. You can choose between 4 different school outfits based on different seasons and that's it. You still get hats, glasses, shoes, socks, and backpack, but that isn't enough. My character can't stand out, and that's an issue. Furthermore, the more in-depth facial customization comes at the cost of your character's expressions being extremely bland. Sword and shield had lovely animations after cooking curry, with extremely expressive faces, in s/v it's back to the generic "happy, sad, surprised, mad" faces, basically. Also.. no way to play the game with the set playstyle. That was a big disappointment, because the switch playstyle is way too easy.
The game seems almost perfect. I’m just hoping for them to fix the performance issues in later updates. Mainly just so everyone will stop trashing the game because of it. Guys. Graphics. Don’t. Make. A. Game. Sure, I wish they were better, but it doesn’t put the game off for me. They’ll release some sort of patch eventually.
Nice and thoughtful Review. But yea, while I love this game and the sheer delight many of its explorative moments can bring - I am a little embarassed by its Performance quite a lot of the times as I'm playing through it and need to chill to some of the Great music to make me forget about it lol.
I was so scared after hearing about the performance issues because I’m almost exclusively a handheld switch player. But then you mentioned it’s actually more stable on handheld and I’m like “well damn I’ll stay winning”
This is the 3rd large scale Pokemon game on consoles. You would’ve thought they had the optimization issues figured out by now. It’s almost as if they didn’t even care to play test the games enough before a release. Hoping they can patch the issues. Still looking forward to playing through the game.
Yea, the technical issues I was completely expecting. The Legends game preformed better then this and could handle more Pokémon on screen. It could be because there are more assets to load in S & V then there was in legends. In regards to that Great Ball spawning in when you walk in a building, it is more likely a reference point for the developers to know where the player would spawn in when the room loads. Usually those kind of things are hidden from the player, but if you see it happening on a regular basis, that means the dev team overlooked quite the glaring detail 😅. I wonder what kind of programming wizardry the devs had to do to make this game even run in the state it is in? Must’ve been quite difficult. On par with the programimg challenges from the first games in the series
I set my system to 720p as there is no major difference between 720-1080p in this game, it doesn't completely remove the issues... But it makes it much smoother at least
Don't blame the hardware. Just look at the other games like BOTW, astral chain, FE Engage, Splatoon 3, MH Rise and alot more. Just look how smooth looking they are. I always say this time and time again, they should have just stayed with 2d. GF is not ready for full 3d yet. look at those muddy trees, ground and rocks. So stop with this trend that the switch cant keep up anymore.
17:55 "Strangely enough, the performance issues are less prevalent in handheld mode".....You're kidding right? This has been a running theme with Switch games since the system released. Performance has traditionally been better in handheld mode, likely due to the Switch's CPU clock speeds staying the same regardless of whether you're handheld or docked and the memory clock not being increased enough when docked. It'd be stranger if performance was the *same* in handheld compared to docked
Performance issues have never been a big issue for me (unless you get constant crashes) as as long as the game is fun and the the soundtrack is bangin’ I’m all good (and I’m sure it’ll get somewhat smoothed out over time)
Sorry to ask but… Is there anything to actually do when you’re exploring? Besides catch and battle Pokémon? Open world sounds great on paper, but I don’t see the appeal if there aren’t reasons to actually explore the world except to hit the main objectives.
That's been my main issue with the series for years. The overworld has just become open areas with no interactive elements at all. Can't even get dungeons anymore. I got to play legends and because of that games theming it made since way stuff was underdeveloped and you really only caught Pokemon but you still has some since of interactivity at times.

However, the game still offers the same as before... Battling, collecting items/Pokémon and that's it. The lack of things to do in the open world is disappointing. No puzzles to solve, or actual dynamic interactions between Pokémon in the wild... The game feels disconnected at times until you reach Area Zero which is probably the best portion of this game. The world isn't empty in terms of assets and Pokémon models, but still lacking actual things to do other than what we've been doing for years now... The raids become repetitive, and there's actually nothing new to do in the overworld...
It’s almost like Gamefreak is physically incapable of polishing a game in the time they are given to make it and that fact will never change as long as the games keep selling.
Just so everyone knows the day one patch came out days ago so every reviewer has played with it installed. This is the performance after the day one patch. It was even worse before

I find it funny that pokemon has technical issues and people are giving it a 7,meanwhile cyberpunk 2077 was literally broken and was scored a perfect 10 by everyone.this is the hypocrisy of the gaming industry.
The switch is absolutely adequate. If it can handle BOTW and a stripped back witcher 3, it should be able to handle a blocky effort like this. I mean...it doesn't look too different from Ape Escape 2 on PS2. Just a terrible terrible company regurgitating and empty, unambitios and predictable title again and again. Cue the "step in the right direction" argument.
Pokemon battles downgraded compared to legend arceus. Contact moves lost the contact part returning to the previous sloppy animations. This should have been mentioned. As usual for pokemon 2 steps forward and one back.

I was playing Sword this week and absolutely hate when pokemon pop up right in front of you out of nowhere. Was really hoping they fixed that. In PLA you can see them at a distance, albeit with a lower frame rate but I think I’d actually prefer that. The gyms not scaling is a huge disappointment to me.
Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are absolute masterpieces with a few hiccups here and there. How does it make any sense for Nintendo titles to be degrading in their quality instead of improving? I'm not overly interested in buying Nintendo Switch games these days because of the sheer lack of quality. It sucks because I used to love Nintendo back in the N64 Gamecube and Wii days.
They have been improving. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a great example of that. The blame here is Game Freak because they have to accomplish the quota of 1 game per year so their games are always bad optimized.
@@jessejohnston255 For starters, Nintendo does not develop Pokemon. The mainline games have always been developed by Game Freak with the exception of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Second, The Pokemon Company handles most of the Pokemon related decisions and they're the ones that force Game Freak to put out a Pokemon generation every 3-4 years. Third, Pokemon is the only Nintendo IP that has suffered on the Switch. Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Kirby, and Super Smash Bros are better than ever.
Why is this worthy of criticism? Times change and so does the way people speak (which also differs per game). The game is also centered around students going to school. Sword and Shield being based in the UK had a lot of slang throughout the entire game as well.

Another thing i haven't seen people mentioning is that, despite the customization being advertised as one of the games' strongest points, it seems like you only get 4 uniform through the entire game... It's even worst than BDSP's customization.
It's actually far superior. BDSP customization limited you to style of outfit, you couldn't mix and match, outside of choosing hair color, and gender etc. At the beginning of the game, that's all you could customize. During game play, you couldn't customize hair or anything, just style of outfit. While there are limitations to the clothes, you can wear, reviewers have said that the amount of customizations you can do is the largest ever seen in a Pokemon game. This game gives you the option to customize so many things from clothes to expressions, nose shape, eye shape, and not to mention, you can customize most of these at any point in the game without having to go to a shop. I'd say the amount of customizations for scarlet and violet are fantastic.
You can change your face at any time. You can change hat, gloves, socks, shoes, and bag, but yes, there are only 4 uniforms (shirt+trousers). But I'm sure they'll add more in the dlc
On top of that the faces don't match the overall style of the series at all. Even if they are the one thing GF put effort in when it comes to customization. Coming off from a game like PLA, this is just blatantly underwhelming
This is proof the switch needs upgrade in hardware . It's dated at this point. But I still think I'll be a good game. People don't play pokemon for graphics
I just can't do the performance and graphical issues; definitely looks miles worse than Sword and Shield and a slight step better than Arceus. I feel we don't need a "realistic" based graphics, the previous was just fine. Terrastilization is actually intriguing and so is the new raids, but without a dynamic leveling system for a challenge, it's just a waste. That was the only thing I hated about Sword and Shield, was way too easy.
The graphics/design/performance are a total deal breaker for me. I'm sure the open world concept is better but I'm gonna wait for a new switch and hope the next pokemon runs and looks better.
Performance is a gamefreak issue. People blame nintendo, despite playing no role in developing the games, and then willfully ignore all the other nintendo titles that have open areas/worlds that run/look great. Gamefreak needs to step their game up. It's not a nintendo problem.

Ikr like theyvarengoing for this semi realistic style and it looks bad.
Its like nothing fits together and is made out of cheap plastic
+ the color pallete is awful…its so dark…i play pokemon for the cartoony bright vibe not this “realistic” dark color scheme
@@LeylaDerben I mean they should.... Do I think they will? No
Even as a huge Pokémon fan I really can’t defend the performance issues.

There are always going to be pokemon you wish were in the game, they will probably never release a game that has them all
I used to feel the same way but now I honestly wish they restricted the roster even more.

@@renren47618 Yeah. I can only remember one area in the whole game that actually lagged really bad in XC3.

Man what version of Sword and Shield were you playing with “extremely expressive” faces? Every single cutscene the character simply looked like 🙂
The game seems almost perfect.

Man this is such a shame. Must feel bad for the programmers to be rushed into putting out a project that's clearly rough around the edges : /
I can’t justify a $60 purchase with this level of jank. Pokémon games shouldn’t be “expected” to have performance problems. They need to do better.

Just look how smooth looking they are.

you caught your lead Pokemon in a great ball. if you change your lead Pokemon the ball in the entryway will change to whatever you caught it in. if I had to guess, it may relate to how they spawn your Pokemon for the "lets go" feature since you can't use that feature inside building
@@DPSnumber1 What's the excuse for Sonic Frontiers then? That game is not what you would come to expect from a 2022 title.
I am sad about level scaling absence.
The game looks really interesting. I'm just gonna wait for either a patch or a discount. I ain't paying full price for its current state.
This is starting to tell me that the switch is getting out of date even for first party games
I'm very surprised by the lack of criticism for the "modernized" dialogue. Like characters saying "that's an L for me" and other nonsense.
I don't understand how that's bad though. That's like disliking people for speaking like that. Language evolves whether you like it or not
Why is this worthy of criticism? Times change and so does the way people speak (which also differs per game). The game is also centered around students going to school.
Sword and Shield being based in the UK had a lot of slang throughout the entire game as well.
@@Geoter711 It's not "language evolution" it's just dumb youth slang, the kind that makes me ashamed to be part of Gen Z. Not to toot my own horn, but I'm a cut above the rest of my generation, more intelligent and such. I don't speak like a total fuckwad. My peers will inevitably grow out of this slang, and soon enough, they'll look back on this game and cringe from how dated the dialogue is.
@@JaxonElzinga Dabbing in Splatoon 3 exists.
@@SALTYTOAD00 Disgusting.
Another thing i haven't seen people mentioning is that, despite the customization being advertised as one of the games' strongest points, it seems like you only get 4 uniform through the entire game... It's even worst than BDSP's customization.
Well that sucks
@@Blaizk i was obviously talking about clothes option
You can change your face at any time. You can change hat, gloves, socks, shoes, and bag, but yes, there are only 4 uniforms (shirt+trousers). But I'm sure they'll add more in the dlc
On top of that the faces don't match the overall style of the series at all. Even if they are the one thing GF put effort in when it comes to customization. Coming off from a game like PLA, this is just blatantly underwhelming
Thank you Tris for the review!🙂 looking forward to playing the game myself
This is proof the switch needs upgrade in hardware . It's dated at this point. But I still think I'll be a good game. People don't play pokemon for graphics
I just can't do the performance and graphical issues; definitely looks miles worse than Sword and Shield and a slight step better than Arceus. I feel we don't need a "realistic" based graphics, the previous was just fine. Terrastilization is actually intriguing and so is the new raids, but without a dynamic leveling system for a challenge, it's just a waste. That was the only thing I hated about Sword and Shield, was way too easy.
Lol I actually enjoyed arceus more than sword and shield xd
Very much agrees!
The graphics/design/performance are a total deal breaker for me. I'm sure the open world concept is better but I'm gonna wait for a new switch and hope the next pokemon runs and looks better.
