Jock and Trusty were actually being really sweet in that scene where she came home from the pound. In those days if a woman had had those sorts of experiences she would have been seen as 'damaged goods' especially if she was pregnant. They are offering a platonic marriage type arrangement in order to provide for her and protect her reputation.

@@SophieLents not necessarily but it may have been assumed she might be by society based on the fact she and Tramp were gone all night. Even being in jail for the night would have been scandalous for a society gal. I may be overthinking this but given that dogs are sapient and seem to have a society similar to our own in this movie I'm assuming social norms would be the same.

it is implied, also her family life was not so wellcoming anymore so they were ofering her a way out, but she was about to refuse. It speaks of her character too, you know? things were geting though and she was offered to run away with a boy or settle down with a friend but she chose to stick with her family handle it herself
she may be naive and inexperinced but she is also loyal and responsable

22:29 Something a lot of people miss about this scene: They're offering to marry her and let her stay with one of them because she's pregnant, and if word got out the father was a street dog, it would've ruined her reputation. They're doing this to help her save face.
Also explains why they got so angry when he showed up again. In their eyes, he knocked her up and left her to take care of the puppies on her own.

Happy late Valentine's Day! 💝 I actally watched this for the first time recently to celebrate Valentine's Day, and I absolutely loved it. I like how the dog's think Lady's owner's pet names for each other are their real names, and how the dogs perceive the human world in general. As kind of problematic as Si and Am are now, their song is still catchy. The other songs are pretty good too. The spaghetti scene is always great, and the entire last ten minutes were action packed and so satisfying. This is truly one of Walt Disney's greatest classics.

Fun fact about the invention of spaghetti and meatballs:
Many Italian immigrants came from the south (the poor) part of Italy, and were used to a mostly vegetable-based diet. However, when they came to the US they found foods that rich northern Italians were depicted as eating, such as sugar, coffee, wine, and meat, available for prices they could afford for the very first time. This is why Italian Americans were the first to combine meatballs with pasta, and why a lot of Italian American food is sugary and/or fattening.
Italian American cuisine is a celebration of Italian immigrants' newfound access to foods they hadn't been able to access back home.

Not sure if anyone posted this before, but anyway, felt it might be an interesting little trivia, if you are interested! The beginning of the movie is actually based on something that really happened with Walt Disney. He was feeling guilty he left his wife alone so much because of work, and she always said, if she ever were to have a dog, she wanted one of Lady’s breed. So, one christmas, he brought her Lady inside of a hat package. She was already complaining he brought her another hat, but when she saw, there was this puppy. So he based this movie in this real live event of his.

My cousin's previous dog used to get beer whenever they walked her by the local bar. Tea is nothing. :D
Yes, saloon-swing doors were very popular on kitchens and butler's pantries of these turn of the century houses. Made it much easier to carry trays of silverware in and out.
Boris is a Russian dog indeed, specifically a borzoi or russian greyhound. They're one of the biggest and goofiest greyhound breeds. Or as today they're called on tiktok: the long bois.
Actually during this time there was a weird double standard around the subject of couple loyalty: being a "player" was frowned upon but it was socially silently accepted if married men flirted publically with other women or even had affairs with them. Weird times.

There were a couple of things I didn't get right away. I'll explain them here.
#1 At the beginning, when Darling opens the present, she asks if it is the one she was admiring. The one trimmed with ribbons. She says this because the present is just a hat box. She thinks it's a hat.
#2 Jim dear hung up a Yale flag. Which is a college. While girls can go to college, it was much more likely for a boy to go as they could get sports scholarships. At least, that's my guess. Anyway, Jim Dear hung up the Yale flag because he was hoping for a boy.
While Darling obviously wanted a girl, as she was thinking up and writing down different girls' names.
"All we can do is....hope." They were both hoping for a boy or a girl, respectively.
#3 Other comments explained this, but I want to as well because I always thought it was weird growing up.
The scene where Jock and Trusty came to see her after ahe was brought out of the pound, it is very heavily implied that, by this point, Lady was pregnant. Since she is not married, it would be considered a great scandal if word got out that she is pregnant without being married. Some people to this day, myself included, still look down upon pre marriage pregnancy. However, it would be much worse back then. As everyone would look down on her. They were offering to have a platonic marriage where one of, probably both of them would care for her while she gave birth to and raised her pups. They essentially thought the Tramp had banged her up and left her to deal with the shame and to raise the puppies without a father. All 3 of them were very angry with Tramp. Jock and Trusty were extremely angry as you saw. With good reason.
Hope that provides more explanation. Sorry. I'm not good with words.
I will possibly make another comment if you miss anything else.
I love this movie with all my heart.

You have never seen a swinging door inside of a house? Its quite common for doorways that connect kitchens and dining rooms. Modern homes don't have them as much, but they're still common in mansions or just bigger houses in general They don't have knobs and are meant to swing so that so that your "help" /butler can serve the meals while not having to grab a knob. It also doubles as a privacy means to keep you and your guests from your help who would be in the kitchen during your fancy dinner parties.

🐶👍 Great reaction as usual. This movie contains an important element in the history of animation...The very first A-list celebrity vocal talent to be utilized in a Disney full-length animated feature. It was definitely a harbinger of things to come. Peggy Lee, the voice of "Peg" (the dog in the pound who sings the "He's A Tramp" song) was a major star at the time. In another 12 years, Disney's original "The Jungle Book" (1967) would once again raise the whole concept of "celebrity vocal talent" to new heights, and pretty much every full length Disney animated feature since then has included at least one well known celebrity voice. The one exception might be "The Black Cauldron" (1985) unless one considers comedian John Byner to be a major celebrity. You're probably going to read this a lot from other commenters, and it's definitely true: If you enjoyed this, you'll enjoy the original "101 Dalmatians" (1961) even more. 🐕

Back in the 50s, you couldn't show pregnant women because of the strict Hays Code. During this time there were other clues such as the pregnant lady was knitting baby socks. In fact, Disney themselves didn't show any pregnant women until The Emperor's New Groove in 2000. Sounds absurd that they did it so late but mind you that fart jokes in cartoons was consindered taboo until they made Pumbaa pass gas in The Lion King in 1994.

@Sophie Lents Aunt Sarah is voiced by Verna Felton who does the voice of Thumper’s mom in Bambi, the queen of hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella’s fairy godmother, Mrs Jumbo and the matriarch elephant from Dumbo, and her last Disney role is Winifred from the Jungle Book.

Aunt Sarah may come off as mean but she's not an evil character. She's just a cat person who is very strict, therefore doesn't want dogs to be near the baby.

I was the third of seven children, and I was about one and a half years old when the next sibling was born. So I never really had that feeling of fear that my mom would have more children.
Over all, my siblings and I basically got the same amount of attention.

Sophie is exactly right. Lady has no right to be upset that Tramp had one or two gfs before her.
I heard they actually were going to kill off Trusty in that accident with the wagon.

One thing that makes me cringe rewatching this movie is that the Siamese cats are portrayed with Asian stereotypes from the time (1955,) i.e. the music, the eyes, being portrayed in a villain-esque light, and other things

I'm sure that Jim Dear let Lady drink coffee (which I can't imagine being good for a dog but that can't be half as bad as Aunt Marge in Harry Potter and The Prisoner from Azkaban letting her dog drink whiskey, that's a no-no) as americans are such coffee drinkers (sure, we swedes drink a lot of coffee too but still, me, I'm a tea drinker).
